Boys Basketball: Alabama signees Justin Coleman, Riley Norris lead ASWA All-State squad (complete team)

If the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State boys basketball selections are any indication, the UAB and Alabama basketball teams should take positive strides in the near future.

Three Blazer signees and two from the Crimson Tide were among the first-team selections when the ASWA released its annual All-State teams late Saturday night. The list includes all six AHSAA classifications and the AISA.

Finalists for Player of the Year in each class and, as a result, for Mr. and Mrs. Basketball will be released next Sunday. The Player of the Year banquet will be held April 16 in Montgomery.

Alabama signees Justin Coleman of Wenonah (Class 5A) and Riley Norris of Albertville (Class 6A) were both first-team selections in their respective classifications.

Coleman – No. 1 on AL.com's A-list of top seniors in the state – averaged 28 points, five rebounds and six steals for the Dragons this year. The 5-foot-10 point guard is a four-star prospect and was the Final 48 MVP in 2013. This marks the third All-State selection of his varsity career.

Norris – No. 3 on the A-List – is part of a talented 6A first team. The 6-foot-7 senior averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds a game and finished his Albertville career with 3,087 total points and 1,796 rebounds.

He is joined on the 6A first team by a pair of UAB signees – Lewis Sullivan of Hazel Green and Jarvis Calhoun of Hewitt-Trussville. Sullivan averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds a game, while Calhoun checked in at 19.7 points a game.

The other UAB signee is Class 4A Final 48 MVP William Lee of Dallas County. He averaged 20 points and 13 rebounds and had 22 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks in the Hornets' 51-48 victory over J.O. Johnson in the championship game.

Other first-team selections included Athens’ Giddy Potts and Parker’s Marquell Oliver in 5A, Purdue signee Isaac Haas of Hokes Bluff in 4A, Madison Academy sophomore standout Joshua Langford in 3A, Luverne shot-blocker Donta’ Hall in 2A and Brantley sharp-shooter Wesley Person Jr. in 1A.
