Player of the Week

Rodney McGruder, Kansas State

I’ve been waiting all year for McGruder to hit his stride, and it seems like he finally has after having his most impressive outing of the year against Oklahoma State. In arguably the biggest game K-State has been in so far this year, McGruder dropped 28 points leading his team the close victory with little help from anyone other than Nino Williams. He had 26 of his points in the second half, and had three three-pointers in the closing minutes to seal the game.

Who’s Hot

Cory Jefferson, Baylor

As I briefly predicted in my Big 12 Preview, Jefferson was a player who was ready to break-out this year, but I didn’t expect it to be of this magnitude. The senior forward has been outstanding all year, going from roughly 4 ppg and 3 rpg last season to almost 15 and 9 this year. That in itself it impressive, but the way he’s doing it is more impressive. He’s shooting nearly 66% from the floor (tops in the conference) on the year with four of his past five games going over 70%. He’s 2nd in the conference in rebounding and blocked shots, and also had 4 double-doubles on the year.

HM: Isaiah Austin, Nino Williams

Who’s Cold

Johnathan Holmes, Texas

Holmes was leading the conference in rebounding at one point and was having one of the better sophomore seasons in the conference. While he hasn’t been terrible, he’s been down lately in terms of rebounding (6 per game from 8 per game), he has 13 fouls in his last three games despite playing fewer minutes, and his FG% has been a putrid 38.1% recently.

HM: Brady Heslip, Buddy Hield
