Billy Donovan addresses Florida's uncertain roster

• Five-star signee Chris Walker is not currently enrolled in fall classes at Florida
• The backcourt is uncertain%2C thanks to a suspension and a transfer
• Senior point guard Scottie Wilbekin remains suspended indefinitely%2C but Donovan thinks he%27ll play at some point

On paper, Billy Donovan has one of the most talented and deepest teams out of anyone in college basketball this season.

"It looks that way, but to be honest with you it's really not that way," Donovan told USA TODAY Sports Thursday evening.

Here's why Donovan is uncertain.

Five-star signee Chris Walker is not currently enrolled in fall classes at Florida and is not listed on Florida's 2013-14 roster on the school's athletic site. At this point, it seems unlikely that he will enroll before Tuesday's add/drop deadline. Indications are that the more likely (and Florida's best-case) scenario is Walker finishing up the academic work he needs to in order to meet NCAA eligibility requirements this fall. If he gains his initial eligibility, the 6-10 forward would enroll at Florida in December.

Donovan has said he's not rushed Walker through this process and that Walker wants to be at Florida, "however long that takes." Donovan declined further comment on Walker.

Even if Walker can't play right away, the Gators should have enough depth in the frontcourt to win without him. The Gators have a pair of seniors – Patric Young (10.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Casey Prather (6.2 ppg, 3.7 rpg) – as well as two transfers now eligible to play: Dorian Finney-Smith from Virginia Tech and Damontre Harris from South Carolina.

The backcourt is a little more up in the air, aside from freshman Kasey Hill, a McDonald's All-American point guard.

Senior point guard Scottie Wilbekin remains suspended indefinitely after he violated team rules earlier this summer. Wilbekin averaged 9.1 points and 5.0 assists last year, and this is his second suspension in a year.

"I do expect him to play," Donovan said Thursday. "Obviously, he was suspended for the summer. He's still suspended right now. He's not part of our team. I do believe he will play, provided he does all of the things we've been asking him to do. He's been really, really good up until this point in time.

"He's very, very remorseful, and I think he's disappointed in himself and letting the team down. Right now, he's got to show and prove that he really wants to be here and be part of the team."

Donovan said that Wilbekin has been working out and lifting weights away from the rest of his teammates. The point is not to alienate Wilbekin from basketball, but to hit home the point that he is not a part of the team right now.

"He's obviously got to work his way back to the team," Donovan said.

The Gators could also potentially receive a boost from Rutgers transfer Eli Carter, who left the Scarlet Knights in the wake of the Mike Rice scandal. Two ex-Rutgers players (Mike Poole at Iona and Vincent Garrett at Green Bay) will be eligible to play right away at their new schools, and Donovan is hopeful the same can be true of Carter.

"I haven't heard anything yet," Donovan said. "The family has to be involved, so the family is dealing with Rutgers. We're really not involved as an institution. We've kind of tried to help direct Eli and his family on the proper channels to go through, but they've got to kind of do it on their own for the appeal."

Even if Carter is granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, he may not be ready to play. He's still recovering from a fractured right fibula, an injury he sustained in February.

"He's running and shooting and doing those things, but he's still got a ways to go before he's cleared to play," Donovan said.

Senior forward Will Yeguete (5.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) is also working his way back from offseason knee surgery. Donovan said Yeguete hasn't done any running this summer.

That leaves Florida with a lot of question marks – but, also, more than a month to find some answers before the season starts.

"Our team, although looking at it on paper this summer looked good, our team is not necessarily the same as it looks," Donovan said. "If we were to play today, who's on our team?

"There are so many unknowns about what will potentially happen with some of our guys it's really, really hard to say what our team looks like."
