Sucks to know Prince was traded. He’s the last member of that 2003-04 Champ Team. Its a good trade for both teams. Rebuild mode for Pistons and Prince to give his veteran smarts and gritty defense to a playoff team. Bad thing about this trade is that Pistons didnt unload Villanueva / Maggette / Maxiell ‘s bad contract.

Last time the Pistons had expiring deals there just weren’t any good free agents, and now? The exact same thing. Joe D better not do that again

If Joe Dumars blows all the Pistons money on so so players gain, then I have to imagine he’ll be fired. How dumb was it to spend so much on Ben Gordon (5 years $55 million) and Charlie Villanueva (5 years $35 million)? It’s not one of those things that seemed like a bad idea in hind sight, it seemed dumb when it happend.

The problem with this that sucks and makes little sense is that Joe D gave up 1st round pick to Ship out Ben Grodon to get Maggette’s expiring contract, even tho Gordon’s is set to expire next off-season. If he waits (which would probably be in his best interest) then that trade hurt Det. Only way it is worth using cap is if they can pull trade for a star this off-season

Although he has made some bad choices I still remain loyal to Joe Dumars. More teams than not have at least one player that is well overpaid. Think of the Travis Outlaw, Baron Davis, Rashard Lewis, Gilbert Arenas type contracts out there. Even Rudy Gay and Joe Johnson were overpaid.

The worse mistake Joe did was to trade Chauncey for that selfish ball hog in Iverson. With this and signing Ben Gordon greatly effected Rip Hamilton – it was all downhill after that.

At the Ben Gordon / Charlie signing, both Gortat and Big Baby were FA. I remember at the time I would have signed both of them for the same sort of money (or even cheaper) instead of Gordon and Charlie.

Ben Gordon had just come off 3 seasons averaging nearly 20ppg and if you remember he had just come off a very good playoff series also. Charlie V had just came off a 16ppg season. Sure he is not much of a defender but he is a big that can shoot outside. He was named to the All-rookie first team and once scored a Raptors franchise record 48pts in one game…At the same time NJ spent the same sort of cash on Travis Outlaw’s contract.

Gordon and Charlie V were not great signings, but not totally very horrible at the time. I remember thinking that they were just average signings that would keep the pistons just in the playoffs at a 5-8th seed and not much more.

The Magette for Gordon deal is about the same sort of money except the pistons get out of jail one year earlier for Magette’s contract to end before Gordon’s.

The last 3 years have been gold for the pistons in regards to drafting Monroe, Knight and Drummond. Prob just enough for Joe to keep his job.

At the end of this season Calderon (saved two years at $7mill on the prince contract), Magette, Maxiell and Bynum contracts are all up leaving the pistons massively under the salary cap. There will be at least one or two good FA signings plus another lotto pick for the pistons….

Personally I still consider drafting Darko over Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh as Joe Dumars worst decision.

Every personnel/scouting guy in the NBA would have made the exact same selection at the time. It was a steal of a trade to get the pick in the first place (Joe D), and maybe the biggest reason Darko sucked was Larry Brown destroyed his confidence early.

If Larry Brown killed Darko’s confidence for his entire career then he didn’t have much to begin with. I understand a lot of player personnel professionals say they would’ve made the same decision, but I always thought they should’ve taken Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh.
