Ghost01ParticipantOkay, I’m not the most anti-ESPN guy out there. And I’m not the most anti-Anthony Davis guy out there. But I have just read way too much today about people overrating this guy. On twitter, Bill Simmons wrote:
"I know this isn’t a new opinion but holy sh*t is Anthony Davis gonna be a good pro. He’s like McHale 2.0 with a dash of Sam Perkins."
Then reading Wilbon’s chat wrap, he continuesly compared him to Tim Duncan. Am I missing these games where he is doing anything offensively other than dunking? I get it, he blocks alot of shots. So does Bismack Biyombo. He still got beat up against decent college big men he’s faced this year, and still leaves alot to be desired offensively. What can you really say he does for an offense? He isn’t knocking down mid range J’s like TD, and he isn’t any sort of an elite passer. And his post game is questionable, AND he will probably be mis-cast in the NBA as a Center. I like Anthony Davis and think he will stick around in this league. But overhyped much?

Future_Scoutwow are you asking this at a wrong time. last game he displayed his ability to shoot so well, including a impressive (MUCH NEEDED AT THE TIME) turn around jumper right over the defense.
"i see a lil midrange in the future, that can be combined with a pumpfake/slash very easy for hi-iq players -that use to play sg. we all kno nasty that could be. he shows a nice form (even on some off the dribble shots he’s taken), and shoots the FT at 70% better than rivers, wrotten etc etc. "

ItsVictorOladipoParticipantCmon man Davis was the #1 guy in his highschool class and so far as a freshman he’s a candidate for NPOY on the #1 team in the nation. Of course he’s gonna get mad props.
McHale with a dash of Sam Perkins is a pretty funny comparison though. I’m not a huge fan of comparisons to begin with but if I had to come up with something for Davis I’d say a hybrid of Jermaine O’Neal and Marcus Camby.

Ghost01ParticipantDO you guys know who
Tim Duncan
and
Kevin McHale
are?
They did more than have one good game against Vanderbilt. They are like 2 of the 5 best PFs of all-time. Putting him in that class is absurd.

SeattleSuperChronicsParticipantHonestly tho Davis is all that and more. The kid gets it. Tell me the last pro prospect out of the windy city to be a bust….besides fat ass eddie curry. He’s tough, ugly and gritty. I see a lot of KG in him. How can you say he’s overated when hes going to break the single season blocked shot record. This dude would KILL, i mean MURDER biswhack byhorrible 1-1

LOL at "He’s tough, ugly and gritty.", very true.

Ghost01ParticipantPS
In that video, he hit 3 Jumpshots. 2 of them he was in the paint.

HadzialijagicParticipantTim Duncan averaged 9.8 points and 9.6 rebounds in close to identical minutes as a freshman.

Chilbert arenasParticipantHe’ll be the number one pick either way so why make such rediculous comparisons. It doesn’t do the kid any good to get expectations so high. Especially when I would not compare his game to Duncan or McKale. He’s much closer to KG in the way he plays and his physical attributes.

Maniac MaciejParticipantRegardless of what you think, scouts and executives all seem to be pretty unanimous on the issue: Anthony Davis is going to be a pretty good player in the NBA, with the potential to be a great player.
It reminds me of watching Derrick Rose in college, to the extent that you know that you are not really seeing his full aresenal of skills because he is filling very specific roles on a very good team.

I think this is the first time I give Maniac a thumbs up.

Memphis MadnessParticipantBill Russell with a dash of Pervis Ellison. 🙂

kobyzParticipanti have to mention… Lamar Odom is the best ball handler 6’10 guy ever, but Anthony Davis could be the second best, he very coordinate and smooth dribbling the ball.

Ghost01ParticipantWoah woah woah….now hes Derrick Rose? do you remember Derrick Rose in college? Keep this in mind when you make that analogy, in Memphis’ last 15 games that year, discounting the 4 complete blow outs that Rose barely played in, here were his averages:
21.1 PPG, 4.9 APG, 5.1 RPG, 1.7 SPG, 57 FG%
When Anthony Davis has a stretch that is equivalent to this through the end of the season and the NCAA’s, then we will begin to compare him and Rose in college. Because was Rose was as good as they come down the stretch.

omphalosParticipant@kobyz: forgetting about Kevin Durant? 2nd best 6’10 ball-handler all-time is a ridiculous claim.
I can see the KG comparisons, but he’s nothing like McHale, who had endless post moves compared to Davis’ none.
I hope he comes out this year because if I have to put up with another year of Anthony Davis hype I’ll go mad.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipant“Tell me the last pro prospect out of the windy city to be a bust….besides fat ass eddie curry.”
Wow. Jereme Richmond bummed out a day ago. Where do you think he is from? The whole reason Jeremy Lin was able to become JEREMY LIN! is because Iman Shumpert can’t run the point and can’t shoot. The list of Chicago guys who have done nothing is long. Armon Johnson, Demetri McCamey, Michael Dunigan, Mac Koshwal, Jon Scheyer, Luke Harangody, Patrick Beverley, Julian Wright, Luther Head, Alando Tucker, Dee Brown, Shannon Brown, James Augustine, Leon Smith, Ronnie Fields, Thomas Hamilton… Geez, Eddy Curry has basically had one of the better careers of guys who have come out of Chicago.
“I like Anthony Davis and think he will stick around in this league. But overhyped much?”
ESPN has to promote its partners and its products. It can get NBA fans to watch bad college basketball games by talking about how great the prospects are. It has the rights to broadcast the draft, so the draft has to be good. There is no one at ESPN like Barkley who in the middle of All-Star weekend will blurt out that there is no way Turner would ever want to put on a Wizards or Timberwolves game. He has used the same joke two years in a row. It is true in both cases, but nobody at ESPN could do that. Anthony Davis is a player with a 4-style game who has the body of a 3 and plays the 5 in college. He is not an NBA center no matter how much people want to believe that shot blockers from college and Europe make for great NBA centers. You can’t promote the top pick in a severely overhyped draft year as someone who is entering the league either as a less offensively skilled Andrei Kirilenko, a probably smarter Anthony Randolph, an American Jan Vesely, or a younger faster developing Taj Gibson. You turn off that draft before it starts because that guy is not turning around the Charlotte Bobcats. If you compare him to Tim Duncan, people take notice. It is the draft savior dynamic. It doesn’t matter that they do not play remotely similar games. Look, Tim Duncan never made a non-game winning jump shot and have it get mentioned in the first paragraph of a game recap simply because it went in. That is what happened last weekend.
The problem with the draft savior dynamic is that it is going to put him in the completely unfair position of being viewed as a messiah for a garbage club that realistically needs three high quality lottery picks before it even is worth remembering. If it didn’t matter when Bismack Biyombo was being called another Ben Wallace, a Serge Ibaka clone, and a 6’9″ Dwight Howard, then why should it matter if another player comes into the league with unrealistic expectations? Heck, if Biyombo was that good they would not have a chance at this year’s “young Tim Duncan.” You keep searching for a savior until you find one.

Ghost01ParticipantSolid points…its just so annoying that they do this sh*t…
Also, lets not act like Anthony Davis was some Chicago, inter-city boy playing on Simeon or Whitney Young. He played for some private school team that wasn’t even any good and didn’t play much real competition.

TheLastWordParticipantlol at ripping on this guys post moves when he is 18 years old. Still wet behind the ears. By 23 he is going to a top 3 player in the league.
