Whenever I read any Anthony Davis topic, the general concensus always seems to be that he is destined to fill out and become a power forward. I don’t really understand why people feel this is the best position for him. Davis has a seriously unique game for his size, and to me it seems like making him bulk up and completely reinvent himself in the post isn’t the most practical thing for him to do. Watching any of his highlights (which I’ll admit, isn’t the best way to evaluate a player) you can see that he is very comfortable handling the ball in the open court, has excellent court vision, and a pretty smooth looking shot. The reason people find him such an intriguing prospect is because he a guard with power forward type length, so for me I would really be a lot more excited to see him stick to playing the guard position and just being a massive match up nightmare against pg’s, instead of trying to bulk up and become just another 6’9 power forward. Anybody agree, or am I crazy?

I think in the long run his best position will be power forward. He is already 6 10 and possibly could grow another 1 or 2 inches. Also as a pf he could still be a huge mismatch offensively with a great inside- outside game ala Kevin Garnett.

I don’t know if Davis necessarily needs to fill out immediately to become a power forward in the NBA.  I think due to his length, quickness, and overall timing he can be very effective on the defensive end.  His quickness is better than most power forwards in the league already, and he will use that as a advantage early on in his career.

Garnett was really skinny his first year in the league, and was still skinny for his next 4 or 5 years.  Davis will fill out naturally as he gets older.  But I do think he is and will be a power forward in the league from day one.

but as a 6’11 guard, he’d have to keep his dribble extremely low, now he has excellent length, speed, PG skills, and athleticism, why not play him as a SF or SG, he may need to improve his jumper(which is IMO the easiest skill to hone) and become the next T-Mac, his speed and length will definitely help him keep up with the few SG and SF who are faster than him

i think at PF he will be most effective, overall it’s the best position for him to make impact base on his game and attributes, remind me Josh Smith meets LaMarcus Aldridge !

I really wanted to post a comment here, but I don’t think I’ll have even made up my mind on how I feel about Anthony Davis until I see how his freshman year at Kentucky goes. I know he was originally an elite PG prospect, and then just grew like eight more inches, but I’m having a hard time settling on an opinion until I see him in college.

He could be oe of those players who could almost play every position but longer term I’d say he’ll be a SF/PF. Don’t forget that Kevin Durant played SG during his first two seasons and before he moved over to SF.

If Davis does have genuine ball carrying skills then you could argue that SF would be his best role but taking that sort of game against a PF could create a lot of mismatches as far fewer if any PF’s are as good at ball carrying as a lot of SF’s.

A lot could depend on where Coach Cal plays him this year with C being mentioned but unless he went to a totally smallball team I could not see Davis being an NBA C for several years at least.

I think he could be more of a mismatch at the four than the three.  If he has the handles that people make him out to have then he could take power forwards off the dribble, but small forwards would be quicker in staying in front of him and with a lack of a pull up jumper at this point he would be neutralized.  At the power forward he would help space the floor and the NBA is getting smaller and becoming more and more European in the that regard.

He’s gonna be a beast for us. He’s not a guard though and his handles is consistent enough to be a SF (his jumper also isn’t at the SF level, doesn’t have real good range) but he is a very good hustler as well as shot blocker and rebounder. I think his future position is PF like someone said ala K.G. Handles are almost the same when K.G was in H.S ( Davis handles is a little better). Regardless what he becomes i expect him to dominate for us this up coming season on the defensive end and get alot of transition baskets. He’s already gotten up to 220 so thats a good sign as far as him gaining weight

Being a 6-1 14 year old that loves to shoot, I know exactly what you mean.

I think people should just let him play the style that fits him best, whether its a 3/4 guys that likes to run the break ala Anthony Randolph, or if it’s an athletic 4 that plays inside ala Blake Griffin, or it’s like a Kevin Durant, a 6-10 shooting wing with unheralded length with a perimeter oriented game as well as a lights out jumper.

PF because of his elite shotblocking potential.  You could always stick him onto a perimeter player on occasion but it’d be a waste of his defensive prowress to have him guard mainly one person out on the perimeter when he has the potential to shut down the paint.  Even though most PFs are now perimeter based, he’ll still be closer to the paint than against wings and  he’d a major weapon defending screens.

KG was often said to play like an SF even though he is a HOF lock as a PF so maybe that is the best comparison for Davis going forward, a young circa 1995/96 KG. He may lack bulk but his wingspan will surely make him a potential defensive lockdown. Imagine having him alongside a solid defensive anchor so he could play away from the basket when needed and also assist inside if required.

I just hate how people really never downgrade Anthony Davis in the position talk and he’s never even played in college yet but when it comes to Perry Jones, everyone  always says he’s a tweener and that’s why he’s dropping down boards, I’d rather a 6’11 235 pound tweener than a 6’10 214 pound tweener.

Anthony Davis imo shouldn’t be over Perry Jones at this point. I think Davis and Jones will both be Power Forwards.  A small rant but oh well. Davis has to prove his greatness to me. 13 and 7 as a freshman with a horrible point guard and a shoot first shooting guard is good in my opinion. Perry Jones III has been doubted.
