GrandmamaParticipantThe question was brought up this morning on Mike and Mike in the Morning. Who would you rather have moving forward? Davis or Love? Greeny said Davis, Golic went with Love.
For me, the answer is obvious. And that’s Anthony Davis. Already averaging 22/11/3 in his second season. An absolute monster on defense. Still has room for improvement. The sky is the limit imo.
Who would you guys go with?

doubledribblerParticipantWhile I think Davis benefits greatly from the smaller and in my opinion weaker defensive bigs in the league because it allows him to do a lot more offensively, I did not have to think hard on it. Davis plays on both sides of the court. He is very raw offensively and can still drop 20. You can tell he is putting in the work. The only concern I have about him is he MAY be a little fragile, but I take Davis 10 out of 10 times. I like Love, but Love is like the new age Tracy McGrady. Love plays on one end of the floor. At best Love should be the 2nd best player on a championship team.

chaParticipantWell, first off I’m assuming you’re comparing their career paths not their playing style as that would be foolish. T-Mac, yes, he was not known as a defensive minded player but he had all the tools to be one. I remember watching his match ups with Kobe, the two would absolutely go at it on both sides of the floor. Whilst Love simply does not have the physical tools, agility that it takes to be a good defensive player. Their lack of defense is different because one chooses not to play it and the other simply does not have enough upside on that side of the floor. Also, I do not believe that T-Mac was second best player on a championship team for the simple fact that he is a first option and can get any shot off anytime over any defender. T-Mac’s career has been a success and failure depending on how you look at it. He played second banana to an established all star, Vince Carter in Toronto, always had a shitty team in Orlando; he almost called it quits for crying out loud and when he finally arrived to Houston that’s when injuries started to surface which ruined his prime years and his best shot at winning a ring as a main option. Love, as great as he is, looks to be a stat stuffer but he’s not going to get you a shot if your team was down with the game on the line.

HaleParticipantGoing forward it has to be Davis. He’s younger, longer, way better defensively and catching up offensively at a rapid pace. It shouldn’t even be a question.

ReactionParticipantFor me, it would be easily Davis. The only other young big that even comes close to Davis’s potential is Drummond in my book. Davis is a beast already. He is going to be a monster in the future.

B-ball fanParticipantThis isn’t even close. Davis is the clear choice. He has so much more room to grow and already puts up numbers that aren’t much worse than Love’s. Davis could be a top-3 player in the league and sooner rather than later. Davis is not only a two-way player, but should even more dominant offensively in his prime than Love is.
Davis’s only big weakness is that he doesn’t go right. He is kinda like Julius Randle that way. But he is developing a righty hook shot over his left shoulder and is right handed, so that should change and isn’t that big of a problem to begin with.
Davis is so far from reaching his potential and is already 4th in the league in PER. I realize Love is third in the league in PER, but he is just barely ahead of Davis and considering Davis’s defensive prowess, Davis is arguably the superior player right now, especially with how he has been playing lately.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantDon’t get me wrong, I’m a huge Love fan. But Davis already is, and is going to be even more of, a monster. I can see him having a KG kind of impact on the league, and he’s SO much more of a game changer than Love is. His offense will only get better, and he’s already miles better on the defensive end. Give me Davis 10 times out of 10 for the future.

druneave3ParticipantThe only reason Golic had that opinion was because he was told that is the side of the fabricated argument he was assigned. Love’s numbers are nice for fantasy but in terms of winning games, championships, and potential, the answer is simple.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI’m sorry, but that argument is so insanely stupid. Have you taken a look at Love’s teammates? He’s had to play with the following guys getting major minutes in the rotation: Darko Milicic, Jonny Flynn, Michael Beasley, Wes Johnson, Rashad McCants, Anthony Randolph, Ryan Gomes, Lazar Hayward, Nathan Jawai, Malcolm Lee, Derrick Williams, Sasha Pavlovic, Ramon Sessions, Craig Smith, Sebastian Telfair…I could go on. He has had to play with some awful players getting a lot of playing time. Not to mention being coached by guys like Randy Wittman and Kurt Rambis, the latter of whom is arguably the worst NBA head coach of all time- he didn’t even start Love despite him putting up numbers until he had a 30-30 game two years into his career when he was far and away the best PF on the team (Al Jefferson was a C).
One player alone cannot win championships. MJ had Pippen. Kobe couldn’t win on his own- he needed Shaq and Gasol/Bynum. LeBron needed Wade and Bosh. Duncan needed Robinson/Parker/Ginobili. Love has had NOBODY. Rubio and Pek are the best players he’s had to help him out, and that core’s absolute ceiling is close to 50 wins.
Secondly, holy mother of God is the Wolves bench bad. When Love is on the floor, they’re one of the best teams in the league. Without him on the floor, they’re basically the 76ers. The Wolves bench has blown so many freaking games this year, it’s ridiculous.
Basketball is a TEAM game. One player cannot do it alone. That is why I hate hearing the "Love’s not a winner" argument. It’s more the fault of ownership/management because they have utterly and completely failed to put complementary players around Love that can help him win. Davis will need other good players around him to help too; I’d argue that he and Holiday are a good start. Evans isn’t really a fit, and neither is Eric Gordon (never healthy).

B-ball fanParticipantCompletely agree. Put Blake Griffin or LaMarcus Aldridge on the Wolves and they wouldn’t be any better. In fact, they would probably be worse.
But I don’t think anybody is advancing that argument here. Just that Anthony Davis is basically a really coveted player to have going forward. They are both top-3 PFs right now, but only recently turned 21, while Love is 25. Even if Davis isn’t a better player than Love right now, he should be within a year.

GlenTaylorSucksParticipantI know, like I said, I’m on the Brow bandwagon for sure. I’m fully aware that Davis will be (heck, you could make a solid argument that he already is) better than Love, and I look forward to watching him get better over the years. I just saw druneave3 make that argument though (better in fantasy = stat stuffer, and basically implied that he’s not a winner), so I had to jump on that before more people started using the "not a winner" argument, lol, cause it’s ridiculous to expect Love to win with what he’s been given, just as it’s ridiculous to expect Davis to be a winner right now with his team as constructed.

WITNESS2014ParticipantLove is an elite offensive player, Davis is already an elite defensive player. Davis’s offense has a long way to go but he is already averaging over 20 a game so that’s pretty scary. Love just doesn’t have the defensive tools to ever be a good defensive player. Im going to have to say Davis even though I think it depends what team they are on if they can be considered " winners".

aztwulfParticipantIf the question were “Who is the better player right now”, the answer would be Love, by a small margin. But, the question posed was “Who would you rather have going forward?” and the answer to that is Davis. Davis is easily the superior defender, and that is never going to change. Love is the superior offensive player by a large margin, but the ‘brow is going to close that gap.
I agree with Glen that Love doesn’t have a lot of talent surrounding him, and that the “not a winner” argument is pretty shallow as a result. Davis hasn’t won anything either. Griffin didn’t win until CP3 showed up. Aldridge has a good supporting cast. Dirk ‘s name should at least be mentioned when having a conversation about the top PF’s.

TallmanNYCParticipantEasy, Love is great, but Davis is one of the top five players in the league.
This summer, I suspect, the Pelicans could trade Davis straight up for every player in the league except for Lebron and KD. And not just because Davis is on one more year of cheap rookie contract and because you have his rights for four more years after that (once you make the max contract offer). But because he is a heavy scorer, high efficiency, good rebounder and league leading shot blocker. And he is young and getting better.

Memphis MadnessParticipantKevin Love is who he is at this point. His last postseason appearance featured him getting a beat down from the Memphis Tigers in the Final Four.
Anthony Davis looks like a 6’10 Kareem.

CavFanPRParticipantDavis has a bigger impact on the game than Love. Some people will argue: “Love has played with awful players throughout the years” but what about this year? He has a great team and is still under achieving. I always thought Love was the prime example of a “stat stuffer”. Let’s not get started on his defense.
AD wins.
