tli232Hi Everyone,
I’ve been doing some statistical analysis of nba stats for a while and am running out of interesting topics to research. (maybe I’m just not that creative)
Do people have any mathematical questions regarding the NBA?
To be honest, I’m trying to find some interesting topics to research so that I can try to get something published.
If you guys could give me some ideas to research, that would be awesome.
Some of my previous work include the mathematical value of a blocked shot to team defense.
Thanks in advance.

JoeWolf1With the league supposedly going small, you could evaluate the impact of 7 footers currently starting or playing over…say 25 mpg vs their shorter counterparts.
I’ve wanted to do that for a while, but lack the time.

tli232I think it’d be cool to look at the 7 footers vs. 6’9" and under big men.
See if they have a statistically significant impact on opponents’ points per game/ Field Goal percentage/ Rebound rate.
Good suggestion.
I currently don’t have a reliable dataset for player heights, but I’m gonna keep trying to get one.

llperezInteresting thread that would undoubtedly require tons of research on your part. One thing that always interested me is the value of ball movement. Relating number of passes per possesion and amount of time the ball spends in any one players hands to offensive production. Nit even sure where you could gather that info though.

XYRYXParticipantCould you please give your opinion about the +/- ratings?
I tend to think that this is one of the most confusing stats in basketball. As a Thunder fan I know Nick Collison is always tops in the league in +/- and this might shows his value to the team but honestly I really have trouble appreciating this stat.
What’s you favorite individual defensive stat to value a player defensive ability?

tli232Mathematically speaking, the delta between your team’s offensive efficiency and opponent’s offensive efficiency (aka your team’s defensive efficiency) affects win/loss the most in the long run.
That being said, the difference between opponent offensive efficiency when a player is on the court vs. off the court is a pretty good measure, in my opinion.

WinterSoldierParticipantI’ve always been curious how much money? During there career, does the average player make based on what number they were drafted?
Example #1 draft picks make 100 mil per career. #2 pick makes 80 mil per career.(those aren’t real numbers just examples)0 - Posted on: Sat, 08/10/2013 - 11:08am #832407

HitsterParticipantI’ve often looked at the effectiveness of people’s scoring. For example Tim Duncan was a very good and efficient big man scorer but often his 20ppg was far more effective than other big men who averaged similar figures or a bit less. For example say Al Jefferson or a pre Memphis Zach Randolph.
Also Kobe had numerous games where he took the winning shot, I’d look t some break down of guys who score when it matters not stats padders.

Ahkasi ClayParticipantwould love to see stats for kobe when a game is within 5 pt with 3 minutes to go, fg%, turnovers Etc…

TRC1991ParticipantIf you could also tell me what exactly Delonte West has wrong with him, that’d be good too!

King CaluchaParticipantI read your article on blocked shots. It was very good.
Right now not focused on sports sciences until I finish my Phd thesis (in Operations research), but after that I’m all in if you want to do anything together.
