My son is really into basketball and media. What would you recommend for him to do to get into this field? He’s just entering college this year.

I would say the obvious major would be journalism.  Where does he go to school?  If it is somewhere with a high major basketball program he may want to get involved with the team as a manager or something too.

It’s funny that although irrelevant to the topic, you bring up posters not knowing the game, when you don’t yourself. You’re the only "High Points" poster that I can honestly say doesn’t know much about basketball at all. You either state the obvious to get points or when you try to think for yourself end up making ridiculous statements. Weird that you mock posters for being exactly what you are.

First of all I believe that there aren’t of users under 18, and second of all, I don’t think I’m a bandwagon fan and I do believe that I am a legitamite basketball fan with a decent amount of basketball knowledge, mind you.

As a college student I would say have him major in communications and minor in kinesiology. Communications deals with all media today, have him focus on the journalism part it will lead him to more of a basketball scouting area and enhance his writing. Kinesiology goes through all the sports aspect from consultant in nutrition, workout, and equipment, health instructor, sports agent, sports management, athletic personal trainer, physical therapist, marketing, scout, sportscaster, sports photographer to cameraman. As you can see it covers every aspect, many people don’t know this area so have him look it up. Onward have him help out with some high school or college basketball team. I have done things from refereeing cyo basketball games, assisting to 8th grade basketball teams, and being a timekeeper and have gotten paid and experience for these things. I hope this helps

Mysterion,if i care about points..I’ll have several accounts like a ton of other posters, even the top posters have several accounts and give themselves points….I dont post as often as i use to…I’m just saying alot of guys dont know anything about the basketball..And either agree with the popular posters to get them to like them..Some are Bandwagon Jumpers and go with whats popular….

I can state few things i went out on the Limb and said and got Negged..But thats ok,becuz later it comes out to be true..

A few years ago i said Kevin Love was a top 10 power forward guys laughed and gave me the thumbs down..Now They’re creating threads everyday raving about how great Love is..I still dont think he’s the best power foward right now..The pf spot has several guys you can put at the top spot….Becuz each 1 has a flaw in his game holding him back, from being number 1 in my book..Even old heads like KG &Duncan can outplay the young pfs on certain nights, they have no flaws in their games….Right now only the Center, small forward and shooting guard spots have clearcut consensus number 1 choices at their positions..

I remember saying JJ Hickson was overrated ..Guys on here, were saying he was a future star, and earlier this year the dude got cut by The Kings,The Kings..

GUys laughed when i said Ryan Anderson could be an all star..Lat season he almost made the team, and just got a huge contract..I dont think he’s a star, but he’s a solid player..

If you’ve followed basketball as long as i have you can get a feel on how certain players will turn out…

To be perfectly honest Mysterion was pretty spot-on. You do have quite a large ammount of subpar posts. I find it ironic how after basically bashing most users for being young & unknowledgeable you follow it up with "U MAD BRO" something used by teenagers & trolls. You’ve accomplished nothing here but making yourself look like a fool.

WOW!! Cynthia.. I see ^ Another long time poster using 1 of their many other accounts….Now he’s pretending to be a girl…

I asked Mysterion why was he mad..Becuz i know who Mysterion really is….

And he’s always trying to talk to posters like they dont know anything…Talking bout he’s trying to teach them…And always Dipping into everyone’ affairs…

I’ve been on here for almost 3 years, and enjoy coming here, becuz it might be the best site on the web to talk and discuss basketball…And i’ve never called anyone out or said their post was weak or wack…Becuz everyone’s point of view is different..The way i see something, the next guy might not see it the same way…

I never bash anyone or worry about telling posters what to post, where to post and when to post…

All i was saying there are alot of guys on here that are bandwagon jumpers..A few years ago when the Mavs won the title, alot of guys was on Dirk’s bandwagon, saying he was the best player in the nba..When Durant lead Team USA to the gold a few years ago..Folks were saying he was the best player in the league..Earlier this year i said Kevin Jones wouldnt get drafted, becuz he had too many holes in his games..I said that becuz thats what i had read scouts had said about him a year ago when he asked them about his pro chances…They said he had a 50/50 shot at getting drafted…Alot of guys only see a player putting up big stats in a major conference and think it adds up to nba success..Thats what i meant by not knowing the game…..

Now hmmm… This thread took an interesting turn.

    @NBAProspectFan1

He should definitely look into Journalism. Radio and Television too. Somebody above mentioned Communication.

I even think there’s a Sports Media or Sports Journalism major at some schools.

The best thing to do would be to get with an advisor and let them know what his plans are, so they can put him on the right track right away. That way time and money aren’t wasted.

I think the big thing with this area is making the right connections… Getting a great internship. Volunteering… Just getting that experience.

Can’t we all just get along?  Old or young basketball brings people togeth…ok I’m just going to stop there, BUT….I think journalism is a good start, but interactive media would be a good thing to incorperate as a double major or minor due to the trends in media going online.  Also learning video software would be smart too. You still need to be able to write, but if you are web savy, can edit your own stories and even do a little programming, you’re way more marketable than the guy who just has a bachelors in jornalsim.

This is very true!!! I took web development because I thought it would be interesting/easy, turns out I not only really liked it but it wasn’t very easy either(challenging but fun!). However I’m amazed how much it has helped me in my life/career. While it was not my major or my focus I constantly run across things all the time that having some minor programming and web design knowledge has been a major plus, just about any company regardless of what it is will be very happy if you have these additional skills.

Being able to not only write a blog but create & maintain it yourself is a huge plus that not many have, it’s definitely a recommended minor. Web development will not disappear anytime soon, it will only grow. It’s always nice to be able to make a web site on the side for an extra bit of cash when you need it as well.
