As excited as I am to see Derrick Williams in a Wolves uni, the more and more I think about it, the more I think it more essential to keep Beasley longterm as opposed to Williams.

Beasley gives the T-Wolves a go-to option as a guy who can get his own shot off from all spots on the floor.  Love is the leading scorer, but more often than not he needs a shot created for him.  In the 4th, the Wolves need that guy who can be a first option scorer and Beasley seems to be developing into that to an extent.

What Williams has going for him is his contract and his defensive abilities.  Beasley’s contract is up before Williams so an extension will be required earlier which will be more money being spent by the Wolves, all while Rubio needs to be signed longterm (and possibly Pek 🙂 as well).  Williams could go more years than Beasley at a cheaper price, but IDK if he will ever be the scorer Beasley is capable of being.

That being said, who do you think needs to stay in Minny long-term?

Okay, I rewrote this twice.  First I went with Derrick, then I deleted it and went Beasley, deleted and now I’m going Derrick Williams.

I would go Derrick Williams because of his ability to play off-ball and shoot from deep.  Beasley is more of a ball-dominant player and having Rubio, Love, and Beasley would cause some problems as they all require the ball and probably wouldn’t grow as well.  To be honest, I’m also willing to say Wesley Johnson isn’t a perfect fit on this team either unless he becomes their defensive stopper.

So after thinking it over several times, I think you sign Derrick.  He compliments better, he’s not an off-court issue.  Seems like a great locker-room guy that just wants to win.  He’s going to be cheaper throughout his career than Beasley because of the standards that have always been set on Beasley.  And he’s a better compliment to Rubio and Love.

I dont think we can really answer that right now. We need Williams to get more playing time, so we can see what he can actually do and if we have something in him.

Thats just my opinion though, should ask bballguy. He is the basketball expert

I’d honestly rather keep both of them and run with a lineup of Rubio-Beasley-Williams-Love-Pek as opposed to continuing to start Wes Johnson (SARCASM, no way Beasley or Williams keeps up with a prototypical 2guard) He frusturates me soooo much.  He had a nice follow on the missed oop tonight but all that he’s good for is oops and a little D, thanks to his passive mentality.

On a side note Luke Ridnour has been surprisingly effective as a scorer @ the 2.  Rubio’s size allows him to play in the backcourt with him.  Ridnour is a downright crafty player.  Never gets the appreciation he deserves.

If the Wolves could make it work financially, keeping both is realistic if Beasely agrees to accept a long-term role as a 6th man.  IDK if he would be willing to, but that would be ideal.  I understand Rubio might attract more talent to Minny, but in Minnesota, more often than not you need to try to keep the talent that you already have as part of your organization to succeed.

I think Williams could develop into a player capable of starting @ SF (as opposed to merely PF).  He’d bring additional defensive help and be able to create offense with Rubio at the helm finding him slashing.  Then you still have that player to come in during the 4th or at points when you need a change of pace and some ISO buckets with Beasley.

There’s no way the Wolves can keep them both happy on the same team. It’s a really tough call as who should be traded though. D-Will’s got great trade value, and Beasley’s still young and could potentially unleash the beast he was in college. Williams is the safer player, whereas Beasley could be better, but he also has more bust potential. I personally would rather they package some combination of Beasley, Wes Johnson and this year’s draft pick (hopefully Utah makes the playoffs) to trade up in the lotto and try and nab Jeremy Lamb or Brad Beal.

I think we keep them both. They are two very talented players and we can just let those walk away right now. I think we should roll with Rubio, Ridnour, Williams/Beasley, Love, and Pek.

Keep Beasley if he’s down with the program… he’s got to go otherwise.  The Wolves have plenty of good players and are at the point where they are looking for pieces that fit their needs.

I personally think Beasley would be better to keep long term for 2 reasons. The first being his ability to score and create for himself. He needs the ball, which if it isnt the primary offense I’m fine with. Sometimes the Wolves become to reliant on Rubio to create for others, and teams just key on that. Sometimes you need a guy who you can just throw it to and say get us somethin. Love is that guy sometimes, but Beasley is a guy who can definitly change a game offensively as a change of pace type player.

The second reason is because DWill probably has more value in a trade right now and will net you more in a deal than Beasley. I personally just do not see him being a 3, he just doesnt seem fluid enough or smooth enough on the perimeter. Hes comfortable attacking and at the elbow, which most teams reserve for their 4s and 5s.

I think the Wolves trade Williams if they can land an all star level scorer at the SG spot… I think Williams is a better trade chip because he was just drafted and can still be molded into a great player for cheap, Beasley does become a restricted free agent this summer and should get some nice offer sheets to play somewhere other than Minneapolis, Minnesota and to become a starter without much debate… If the Wolves can’t find a good deal involving Beasley or Williams soon then Beasley will likely be wearing another uniform next season… In a perfect world the Wolves would trade Beasley to The Thunder for James Harden, the Wolves would need a 3rd Team to give the Thunder a scoring SG(instant offense guys like Nick Young, Oj Mayo and Rudy Fernandez) …I think the Wizards And Nuggets would take a look at Johnson.

I believe that one of the main reasons that Minny didn’t get into extension talks w/ beasley (I am sure there are many others) is that they needed to see what the market for him is. Minnesota needs to be fiscally responsible and both Khan and Beasley’s agent know that there is a good chance that some team will panic and overpay for him in the offseason. However, if this doesn’t happen then Minny could probably keep him for around $6-8m per (JR Smith money) which I think is about his value.

That said, it is a pretty huge risk to trade Beasley right now because Williams is not ready yet and Khan needs to win this year to prove that he is not a complete moron… Honestly, I dont think there is much discussion right now between the two players;Williams gets left by his man and hits open J’s, while Beasley is the only player on the Wolves who can both create off the drible AND shoot (Rubio creates, but doesn’t shoot well, Love can shoot but is not good off the dribble..). Yes, he is crazy and all that, but filling that need is a pretty important role to have. I am not calling Williams a bust or anything, but he is not playing as well as you would expect given where he was drafted. Maybe he will blosom next year like Evan Turner (Did Kevin Durant curse the 2nd pick? [beas, thabeet, turner, williams… just saying..])?

Because Williams is not playing very well and he was drafted 2nd, it is going to be hard to get the right kind of value for him this year, unless he plays a lot better (in which case they prob won’t trade him). Because the front office is putting pressure on the team to win now and Beasley has an important roll on the team, as well as an expiring contract (all you would really be trading for is his bird rights..) it does not seem likely that Beasley will be traded this year (maaaybe if you are a borderline playoff team, looking to get younger, w/a hole at sf, and facing a lot of pressure from your fans.. but would minny take a mid-to-late 1st round draft pick and salary match for beas??). Thus, I would guess that nothing happens with Beasley or Williams until the offseason and when it does it will be about $$ more than who is better..

I’d only trade Beasley for a young player like Marshon Brooks who brings scoring and isolation capability at the SG spot.

If they trade Beasley they need to get a scorer at the 2 in return, because as has been said, Williams isn’t ready yet.

Off the top of my head trading Brooks for Beasley is the only trade which really makes sense for both sides; Nets already have Morrow who is a great off-the-ball player but are shallow at the 3, and the Wolves need someone who can create in isolation and play the 2-guard.

Nets would feature Deron Williams, Michael Beasley and Brook Lopez (possibly swapping Lopez for Dwight), and T-Wolves would finally have a capable SG.

Beasley is not going to reach his potential in minny, I am a fan of his so hopefully he is traded or signs else where when his contract is up.

Its too early to tell what to do long term as Williams has only played a few months into his contract and is only working steadily towards showing what he can do.

At the moment I think Beasley is a keeper. He has improved since coming from Miami. He must continue to play team basketball though (including being the go-to guy at times if it’s needed)

Personally I don’t see why both of them can’t stay long term and have more of Randolph & Johnson’s minutes. I think they can be both be more consistent for this team than Randolph & Johnson.

Keep both. Both are great assets to have. Beasley is a nice option as your 6th man. You don’t have to worry about Derrick Williams and Rubio’s contracts for at least 2yrs so there’s no significant rush right now. Sign Beasley to something around 8mil a year for 3yrs and call it a day. That’s something reasonable at a price teams would be willing to trade for. Williams hasn’t come into his own just yet, his athleticism will only take him so far and nobody wants to see him turn into another Tyrus Thomas -___-

The TWolves should trade Anthony Randolph and Wes Johnson tho…Randolph deserves to be in a better situation for his career and Wes just….Wes just needs to go to Dallas (My team needs youth and old ass VCarter hurting us)

Been saying it all season.. He is more explosive shoots it better in spot up duty, better one on one player. I keep B unless he does not want to be there. Beasley is not a six man. Repeat Not a six man. Will never be effective for long stretches as a six man.

I don’t they would have picked Williams at #2 if they didn’t think he could be a long term solution for them.  Enes Kanter would have been a safe pick for them to play center in the future if they felt Beasley was their other starting forward going forward.

I think they were smart for not shipping Beasley away as Williams adjusts to the NBA, but I think Beasley’s time is limited in Minni.  Minnesota is playing as well as they have since KG was suiting up so I doubt they make any moves this season, unless they get an offer they can’t refuse, but I could see them making a couple moves in the off-season in order to try to taylor their team from a 500 squad to a playoff team.

This team is only beginning to build.

I don’t think (as JoeWolf1) beasley will be part of it. Williams will be a nice player and johnson (when removed to his natural position) will be a great defensive backup.

The T-wolves should think to deal him (he still got some value) to get a real sg : brooks, mayo, could be targeted

Too early to tell..but if I had to choose Im going Dwill all day. Hes an athletic monster who will bang down low more then Beasley will and he still can stretch the floor ok. Hes younger and doesnt have the chucker mentality B-Easy does. Plus he tries harder on D.
