Eric Snow!!! i just have to say that!
more than Gerry Payton, more than anyone!!!
Snow was such a great on ball defender, great team defender, smart, the best of all time at the PG position on defense!
dude its GARY payton lol DAMN
Gary Payton is my #2. Walt Frazier is the greatest defensive PG of all time, a combination of Gary Payton and Chris Paul defensively. Payton though is the best on ball defender, but Frazier had the combination of quickness and anticipation that is unmatched.
man you didn't watch Eric Snow play, he was master at defense!
Eric Snow was good but didnt he play behind Payton when Payton was in his prime years.
Payton was the best D PG all time.
He won a defensive player of the year award if im mistaken.
So this is what eric does on his nights off huh?
Ghetto. Plus 1 man.
I forgot Clyde was a top defender. I would rank him number two though.
"So this is what eric does on his nights off huh?"
Eric Snow sucks at defense! hahahahaha
eric snow was a very good defender. Very few risks and could gaurd either gaurd spot. He allowed iverson to get away with not being a very good defender by taking the other teams best player. KObe bryant said in the past that eric snow was the best defender to ever gaurd him. Personally i dont agree with that. I think gary payton was the best pg i have ever seen play defense.
I would definitely go with GP on this one, I never seen a player who was as tenacious on D at the point. He just took opposing PG's out of their games' on a nightly basis...
Yea I'd have to go with "The Glove". But Eric Snow was a very good defender.
Also Payton was the only PG to have ever won the DPOY award. Frazier though played well before the award came out
Yeah +1 to the above, Payton has the trophy to prove it. He was not only the best defender at his position, but the best defender in the League for a season. Only two guards have earned that honour and I'm sure you know the other one.
Mo Cheeks or Payton.
its a Tie between GP and Walt Frazier
isiah thomas was a pretty good defensive pg back in the days!
no love for Stockton?
Eric Snow was a good, solid defender. He had to guard the 2 guards when he teamed with Iverson and held his own. He was so hard nosed and tough.
But growing up watching GP in Seattle, I am somewhat biased, but I truly believe that he is the best defensive PG of all time. Again he did win the defensive player of the year and is the only PG to ever do it. When you read articles about him, he loved playing defense from the time his father told him thats what wins ball games. He never backed down from a challenge and always took on the best perimeter player every night. A stat that is interesting is that GP held Jordan to his lowest FG% in the Finals of his career. Plus Jordan has said Dumars and GP were 2 of the toughest guys he's played against.
who do you guys think is the best defensive PG in the game right now? not just steals, but on the ball and lock down D
no one gave the goat Michael Jordan a tougher time than Gary Payton did. NO ONE. Hands down he is the best defensive point guard to ever play the game.
Gary Payton is by far the best defensive PG... not for nothing did he get the nickname of "The Glove"
both rajon rondo and chris paul are better than snow and payton...
Mo Cheeks, Andrew Toney, Walt Frazier, Gary Payton.
Two guys who should be in this conversation: Nate McMilan and Mookie Blaylock. Nate McMilan was a great defensive player. In 93-94 he averaged 3 steals per game in only 25.8 minutes per game.... Mookie Blaylock was also second to none when he was a hawk.
You do not give "His Airness" a hard time and are nicknamed "The Glove" for nothing, Gary Payton is by far the best defensive PG of all time, he could lockdown on defense and destroy you on offense, very easy choice, he is the only PG to win the defensive player of the year award and during the 90s era there was a lot of dominant centers so it was not like his competition was nothing special, Frazier was a great defensive PG but lets give credit where it is due, Payton is the best defensive PG, ever, period.
It's Frazier and then Payton...
But for God's sake, show John Stockton some love. Top 5 all time defensive point guard.
HAHAHAHA, snow was good but come on
Gary Payton > everyone
What? No love for Coop?
Bean has always been a good on ball pg defender. Even into his old age.
Jordan as well. Arguably the best.
Gary Payton he locked down pg's and talk junk while doing it and he even held 2's sometimes and did a hell of a job
Payton at #1
Frazier at #2
But the greatest defensive pg at playing the passing lanes, with incredible anticipation and quick hands I've ever seen was Alvin Robertson. Payton and Frazier get the overall edge because they were better on the ball defenders and stronger as well but I still feel like Robertson deserves a mention.
Even though he is a terrible human being he was still a great defender...
all time leader in steals
when I opened this thread, my mind was set to Gary Payton... I certainly was shocked that Eric Snow was kobyz's choice...LOL... what's next? Damon Jones as the greatest shooter of all time?
i know it's not a popular choice, but it's really my opinion, i was the most impressed with Snow defense at PG position of all time, maybe on ball defense Payton and Snow are the same but Snow was better team defense player and smarter on defense!
Snow was smarter on defense then Payton? Go back and watch some tape kid, wow how wrong you are...
And yeah, Stockton was/is the leader in steals, but that's just one aspect of defense, Payton was more versatile, being able to guard the likes of MJ and such. Stockton was smaller, played sound defense and gambled some, getting him the steals. The Glove is one of a kind on defense, the best on the ball defender ever...
I will have to say Payton and from what i have heard Walt Fraiser was a beast as well. Nate McMillian was solid even when he got older but Payton tops all the guys that were mentioned cept maybe Fraiser. Rondo gambles too much for someone to say he is better than Payton. He is not as great a defender as people think. He does not seem to utilize angles as much which he doesn't have to most of the time because his arms are so long. Also I don't see him shuting down the other teams 2 guard without help.
