lolyouthParticipantI live in North Carolina, and am unfortunately a fan (sideline-watcher) of the Charlotte Bobcats. I can’t really pull for the team any longer because they are such a total joke, however I do want them to succeed.
Their increasingly terrible personnel decisions are making it easier and easier to just write this team completely off. From dismantling a team with valuable peices (getting rid of: Gerald Wallace, Tyson Chandler, Raymond Felton, etc.), passing up on good draft picks (Morrison over Gay, Augustin over Lopez, passed on Deandre Jordan in 2nd round, Kemba over Klay Thompson,).
I understand they hired Paul Silas kind of knowing they wouldn’t win, maybe tank a little to try and get that 1st pick. That’s not gauranteed and hardly ever happens, as we just saw. They needed to hire a Jerry Sloan (Teacher) or Brian Shaw. Brian Shaw wanted the job. This is a guy Kobe friggin Bryant WANTED to coach him. Everyone was shocked when they passed up on him. Everyone knows he’ll be a great coach, and what better way to get started than to be able to start from scratch and do everything his way with a young team with no direction.
Instead we get a baby-sitter. Someone that wasn’t even the head coach for their college team. This to me says they are not serious about winning. Even if they lost but were trying, maybe we could bear to watch them. But this seems as though they are trying to tank again, have the worst record in the league or history again, and miss out on the #1 draft pick again.
Should have hired Brian Shaw (who for some reason, actually wanted the job) who can make his mark. Nope, not the Bobcat way. Shock everyone and go for the left feild losing pick. Are they giving season tickets away?

TyroberParticipantLooks like they are already aiming at the #1 pick next year.

TripleDoubleScoutParticipantI actually live in Charlotte and the Bobcats are the weirdest sports organization I’ve ever seen. So weird that no one knows whether they want to win or not

TRC1991ParticipantI don’t even feel bad for Charlotte anymore… they did this to themselves… terrible decision-making after terrible decision-making
2009-2010 starting lineup
PG – Raymond Felton
SG- Stephen Jackson
SF – Gerald Wallace
PF – Boris Diaw
C – Tyson Chandler
how the hell does that turn into
PG- DJ Augustin
SG- Gerald Henderson
SF- Corey Maggette
PF- Tyrus Thomas
C- Bismack Biyombo
in just 2 seasons!

Seamo15ParticipantMaybe Jordan is trying out the old scientific formula that two negatives make a positive . Bad coach+ Bad team= Championship team!

FastAndFuriousParticipantJordan is really looking like he should have just stuck to PLAYING ball, he doesn’t know what he’s doing obviously.

Seamo15ParticipantAnd I don’t mean to call the guy a bad coach too early, it’s just that ive never heard of the guy in my entire life.

benny15Participanthonestly guys, i dont know enough about Dunlap to judge the hiring right away. from what i read, he’s a player’s coach who emphasises on player development and motivation. he’s apparently known among his colleagues for his vast knowledge of the game and a supposed very good teacher. I think charlote knows that they’re team is very young and needs someone to develop the talent that they are acquiring. it seems the direction they are going with is developing their players then running a system that complements them rather than building a system and getting players who fit in that system. look at scot brooks, the guy never served as a head coach either but was a player development type.
when he was in OKC he started as an assistant who helped player development of their young talents, and first thing he did when he became their interim head coach was move Durant to the small forward position, who some people were questioning if he was tough enough taking the pounding with opposing forwards instead of guards. but brooks knew his player best since he helped develop him that durant could despite his frame. we all know what that lead to and how things ended up.
im not saying that Dunlop is a great hire and will be the next Brooks. im just saying that theres not enough about him to say it was the worst signing they could make. there are possibilities that can happen, both negative and positive. and i dont want to bash him before having a better look at him and his effect on the team.

CAROLINA BLUE NICKParticipantLol, I too am a fellow Carolinian and I just feel bad for them. I will support the hometown team but like someone said, Jordan needs to stick to enjoying retirement cuz the guy doesn’t seem like he knows what he is doing. But lets give Dunlap a chance first. You can only go up after a season like this one and anything more than 7 wins is a successful year lol. At least I have the Panthers to look forward too

fliptonnParticipantI watched every St. John’s game this year so here’s the deal. Lavin (the head coach) was out for the season because he had cancer so basically Dunlap was the head coach this year. They didn’t have a very good season but they started 5 freshman. He also really helped develop Moe Harkless who went from not being on the NBA radar to being a potential lottery pick. Dunlap has always been said to be the guy to really run St. John’s since Lavin came but Lavin does all the recruiting. Dunlap does the offensive and defensive schemes and generally runs practice. You can consider him Doc Rivers’ Thibodeau. Now, he wasn’t as successful as Thib’s obviously, but he’s a good candidate. He won the job fair and square. Also, the Bobcats have said that if they got the #1 pick then they would go after a higher profile coach. So if you think about it, Dunlap is perfect for the job. He knows how to come in and fill a coaching void for a year and it will allow the Bobcats to still build for the future.

fliptonnParticipantWhat are you talking about? haha they didn’t draft any of those guys besides felton.

benny15Participantyeah. not to mention the organization never even had Kobe, it was the Hornets who drafted him and traded him to the lakers for Divac. he was never a part of the bobcats.

BothTeamsPlayedHardParticipantThe Bobcats didn’t have to be as bad as they were. The Hornets were without Okafor, Gordon, Landry, Kaman, etc for a lot of the season, and were left with a roster that was just as bereft of talent. Monty Williams got them to play hard, play defense, and ended up winning a few games they had no business winning. The Bobcats laid down, and I’m sure part of it was Paul Silas handing over control to his son. It was a bad message, especially to vets who were the first to check out. There is no magic to Brian Shaw. He isn’t bringing Kobe with him. I don’t know if Dunlap’s background at Metropolitan State or as an assistant with the Nuggets really means much, but they both know the game. My guess would be that the youth and rawness of the team made them want to get a teacher, and that a guy like Dunlap who has coached all over the world and won at a level of college basketball where recruiting is not booster driven won them over more than Shaw who while respected throughout the NBA has had no experience be a part of a long-term building project.

Aran SmithKeymasterDon’t forget Biyombo over Brandon Knight!

surveParticipantI am a Carolinian, but I stopped rooting for the basketball team when the Hornets messed up and made so many dumb personnel decisions that jacked up a playoff team.
the Bobcats arent patient enough. I could see them taking Harrison Barnes 2nd because they need to put points on the board and get some butts in the seat.
you guys do know that they were offering (and still may be) where you buy season tickets for this year and get next years free?

CAROLINA BLUE NICKParticipant@ Surve yea I remember lol. They were talking about it on PTI. I received notifcation of it through my emails as well

RUDEBOY_ParticipantJordan has been known for hiring college coaches that havent had previous nba coaching experience(Remember the Wizards hiring Leonard Hamilton)
When they 1st informed the public they were looking for a new coach, they made it known..That they were looking for someone
1.That would not be looking for a big payday..
2.Someone that wouldnt mind the team not having much money to spend.
3.Wouldnt mind working with young inexperinced players..
4.Someone that Would Just be Happy to have a NBA Coaching JOB..
So this shouldnt come as much as a Surprise…
Dunlap’s salary might be in the 200,00-300,000 range a year…..
Assistant coaches like Brian Shaw would’ve been expecting a starting salary around a million a year….

CAROLINA BLUE NICKParticipantNo technically the New Orleans Hornets were the Charlotte Hornets. They just moved. Charlotte just picked up the expansion Bobcats. Just like the Utah Jazz use to be the New Orleans Jazz. They have no ties to the New Orleans Hornets.
