So i’ve expressed my extreme desire to draft demarcus cousins plenty of times and it’s crazy as a kings fan seeing and hearing all these different things. As far as i’ve heard, they have yet to interview him, which isnt a big deal but they have already interviewed others like cousin’s college teammate patrick patterson (which baffles me when we already have landry). I just felt that i should bring a point that i havent seen anyone bring up yet. He is obviously HUGE, at 6’10 or 6’11 292 lbs and has a monstrous 7’4 wingspan. he is practically an immovable force at this point besides the likes of dwight howard or kendrick perkins being a couple of very few that could actually physically bother him. But i dont want to grill you with the same info. My point is this; being such a freakish physical specimen and playing with the edge and passion that he plays with, people instantly tag him as a dirty player or even label him with red flags. Think if dwight howard was to play in the manner cousins does where hes obviously looking to impose his will physically. or if dwight were to always be fiery like cousins. when you are that huge and you act that way people become terrified because of how big of a person he is and i think thats whats going on with cousins. I mean it definitely doesn’t help that cousins isnt the smartest, in his interviews he sounds like his IQ is somewhere between 60-80, but you cant say that he doesnt play hard and passionate and what team wouldnt want that. He is also 19 still and could very well just need some time to grow up. That time could be somewhat difficult for a team but think of the potential payoff. Cousins back in the 90s wouldve fit in perfectly in terms of the physicality he plays with. I love dwight’s personality, he one of the most humble stars in the league, but at the same time, he isn’t physical enough. Yeah he moves you with his huge upper body strength and might scare you with his monstrous leaping ability but he doesnt have the physical edge that just completely dominates. He’s shown it a couple times in this series against boston, but not enough. Now by no means am i comparing cousins and howard, im just bringing to the surface the point that cousins is seen as somewhat of a menace or whatever his critics want to call it because of the combination of his edge and fire, and his size. Maybe i’m posting this more in hopes that geoff petrie has an account with this forum and it could bring in something he hasnt considered but at the same time, i dont think anyone thought we were going to draft tyreke until about a week maybe less before the draft. petrie can definitely be secretive, ala the kevin martin for landry trade or even that we were interested in tyreke until like i said a week before the draft. Your thoughts?

Again with the super long paragraph. 3 to 5 sentences, man. 3 to 5 sentences.

I really don’t think that Cousins will fall very far. If he does, then that spells some pretty serious concerns about his character. IMO, he’s always showed more of a “cocky big man” personality, not a “bad apple” personality.

If Cousins slips to 7, I will laugh.

Cousins is a classic post player. I think the Eddy Curry comparisons are bad IMO. I think he’s more Andrew Bynum. He will be a banger who shouldn’t leave the post. He could be a 15-10 type player in his 2nd, 3rd season.

Cousins is huge, very long, quite athletic, can handle the rock a bit, shoot a bit. If he works on conditioning, he could impress. He had very good stats compared to Patterson or Favors and wasn’t a cancer for Kentucky, so why would he be one in the NBA. He’s not perfect but could bring scoring and rebounding inside.

hell yeah, the last time the pistons had a great big man, i mean a great big man in regards with his back to the basket, was i say bob lanier. but im not comparing cousins to lanier, but cousins can be really good if he wants to

to the OP: If Cousins had an IQ between 60 and 80 he would be mentally retarded.

Cousins is a guy you want on your team, but you don’t want to build around him or else your team will be 30-52. The Kings would be ideal because they have a franchise player in Evans and it would allow Cousins to be a #1 option scorer, but w/o the pressure of having to be a franchise player.

i think his attitude is just him being him. I like that hes big and hes knows it and knows how 2 throw his weight around. i like wat u said about dwight also. Im not a dwight howard fan at all but i like to see dwight being the bad guy and elbowing people or blocking a shot and talking trash instead of dwight smiling joking around. i think dwight plays a lot better when he plays meaner. people take his kindness 4 weakness and thats why garnett and all those guys are elbowing him and pushing him around becuz they know dwight wont puch back. I think cousins is anything but soft and i think he will be that in your face kind of player

Kobe_Durant_Curry, an IQ of 100 is average for a normal human being. Your IQ doesn’t vastly change as you get older. It stays the same pretty much.

“dude… if cousins, by some act of god, slips to detroit… i swear on my life… i will never miss a game…”

THANK YOU. I love Cousins and think he is going to be an absolute menace and top 3 center in the league within three years. I just watched his interviews at the combine. He did not seem cocky or stupid, he seemed honest, funny, and he looked like he was all business. This kid is going to be a force in the league and every team that passes up on him will regret it mark my words.

If he falls to 7th for us I will literally cry.

“Cousins body fat is much to high. If he dropped twenty pounds of fat he would still be well above 10% BF. In order to get that twenty pounds of fat off you need to lose about 30 pounds… 20 of fat and 10 of muscle if done correctly. Spend time getting stringer again and then repeat. Its a journey. He knew the draft combine was coming up and he admitted he hasn’t really done anything since the season ended. Basically he showed up out of shape with a chip on his shoulder like he was “good enough”. GM’s hate that. Real stars never think their good enough or that what they’ve done is enough. The look to improve and get better.”

HotSnot, did you watch his interview? He does not at all come off like this.

Can everybody who constantly talks about his attitude please watch this kid’s interview and tell me that they still feel the same way. He answers every question honestly and says that he works out for 7-8 hours daily. The interview is on youtube watch it and tell me you still feel like he has a bad attitude.

I feel like his attitude is the most overplayed thing I have ever heard. Whenever I saw him jawing with Coach Cal the next time he came onto the floor he played hard and dominated as much as before. Everybody acts as if he goes into a depression and mopes about the floor after he argues with Cal, when really he comes out and plays just as well if not better.

Attitude is not only about interviews. He has obviously been coached by his agent for that clip you watched. It is the attitude he carries into the locker room. It is how he interacts with teammates not named Patterson and Wall. Orton was as polite as possible about this. It is how he handles constructive criticism and coaching. It is his work ethic. How he carries himself. How he handles things when they don’t go so smoothly.

Teammates look to the “star” players for baselines for all of these things. If they see the star working there butt off so will they. If the star hustles so will they. If the star cant control their emotions, neither will they. If he’s going to be just another guy then no one expects these things of him anyways. Its just Cousins being Cousins.

Don’t give me that junk about him working out 7-8 hours a day. Thats crap. No one shows up at 20% body fat who has put in the work. Maybe he worked out 7-8 hours for 2 weeks? Thats a basic conditioning camp. Thats not anywhere near enough time to improve your body. IF he did put in the 2 weeks and 20% body fat was the result… thats pathetic.

Your supposed to be a pro. Act like one.

As I mentioned above… With all that said. Its a risk versus reward situation and I would still take him at 3 or 4

As far as I can tell its a risk versus reward scenario.

Cousins body fat is much to high. If he dropped twenty pounds of fat he would still be well above 10% BF. In order to get that twenty pounds of fat off you need to lose about 30 pounds… 20 of fat and 10 of muscle if done correctly. Spend time getting stronger again and then repeat. The look to improve and get better.

In addition, any time he’s questioned on anything he snaps back instead of being humble with his response. He’s a jerk plain and simple. Orton and his interviews confirm as much. The attitude may certainly change in the future but to what degree? Some guys never “get it” and I have to believe GM’s fear he might be the type of guy who will always have a horrible work ethic, argue with coaching and just put on weight as his career progresses. Would you risk your job on drafting the next eddy curry?

His talent is unquestioned but will he be a cancer? The farther down the draft he slides the more appealing the risk becomes for a team compared to the talent remaining on the board.

Personally, despite everything I just said I’d take the chance. He has just too many gifts to ignore. I’d hire a full time nutritionist, a personal trainer and get him a mentor like Ewing or any other former great to help him understand what humble actually means and motivate him.

I agree 100% that attitude is not necessarily shown well in interviews. I was merely pointing out that based off of listening to the kid take questions for 15 mins from the media, he does not come off like you describe him at all. You said:

“any time he’s questioned on anything he snaps back instead of being humble with his response. He’s a jerk plain and simple.”

This is not the impression that I got from the interviews at all. Do you really think this after watching his full interview?

Regarding his work ethic. Clearly neither you nor I have no idea how hard the kid is actually working, I don’t know whether he has been working hard for 2 weeks or two months. What I do know comes from what I see of him on the court.

On the court it is clear he does not have the best conditioning and cannot run the floor as well as you might hope he can. But show me a 6’11 C with his strength and power that can run with John Wall for 40 mins. I do not know of any other than Dwight.

On the court it is clear that he is far and away the strongest big man in this draft and will immediately be one of the strongest low-post scorers in the league. This will be true whether he is working hard or not.

On the court he does not look slow, he does not look robotic, he looks fluid and he looks powerful.

I don’t really know what you want from the guy, how many centers in the league have his strength and are chiseled? Again the only one I can think of is Dwight. It is not as if he looks like Shaq age 35. He is clearly over weight, but I don’t think it will be a factor.

My opinion right now is that he will be averaging 20 10 within his 2-3 years. Do I think that he is the hardest worker in this draft? No. Do I think that he does not work hard? No.

I think he is the best big in this draft and if I was a GM I would put my job on the line to get him. Would I take on Elton Brand’s corpse and his contract? Probably not, but I would pay any reasonable price to move up and get Cousins.

If it’s all about all about the toughguy rep…. why Don’t Wall, Favors and Turner come off that way? With Cousins, he comes off that way because he’s an idiot. Talent will get him to the NBA…. Old Country Buffet will be his down fall.
Cousins would be fine on a veteran team like the Celts or a team with a Phil Jackson as a coach…. Teams with young players should steer clear of him.

The guy is 1 inch taller and weighs the same as Kendrick Perkins. How is Perk still in the league? Why hasn’t he eaten his way out yet? Does Perkins really look significantly more toned than Cousins?

Philly management is going back & forth over rather to select Turner or Cousins? But I wish everyone that talks about Cousins immaturity..Had seen him in High School he wanted to be Magic Johnson…Hanging out on the perimeter..Constantly tossing up 3’s..When he came to Kentucky he wanted to do that..But Coach Cal told him his place was in the Post…Cousins listened And he became a 1st team All American as a freshman…Of course he needs to work on his emotions but he’s still a teen..People change……You have to realize these days kids are into hip-hop videos that show them they have to be gangsta..Even kids in the Suburbs rap about project life…And want to be tough & hard….And Cousins being a large kid he had to show his toughness…Can you imagine being a 7 foot kid in High School and known as a softie? When the time comes sometime will wake Cousins up and he’s going to change….

his character problems are really background noise to me…..he might be a little immature but he isnt freakin ron artest (who is still in the league and thriving btw despite having probably the worst charcter in league history)…..

he really reminds me of shaq in his play and how he acts…..its all kentucky hate…..people dont like that he pulled a swtcharoo and went to kentucky last minute…..
