NbanflguyParticipantSaw this on another site and thought it was a interesting topic.
Say its a Heat and Lakers finals. Miami doesnt have a legit C that can guard Dwight. Do you think Lebron is capable of containing Howard in the post? Or is that too much to ask even for a guy like Lebron?

HaleParticipantHe might not be horrible at it, but I wouldn’t advise it. Dwight would eventually be too much for LeBron.

ShekiruBoomParticipanti don’t think he will be overwhelmed guarding Dwight but I dont think it will work fulltime. I’m sure he can guard Dwight in short stretches but just like it was with Dirk in the finals, im thinking other guys will get most of the work.

BasterdInABasketParticipantI wouldnt advise putting Lebron on centers like M Gasol or Hibbert with great all-around post moves but I think Lebron would hold his own vs Dwight in stretches. Lebron wouldnt be able to play his usual great help defense which is a huge asset for MIA to avoid the alleyoop. One on one in the post though Dwight relies a lot on his spin move and hook shot and James has the quickness and strength to at least alter these moves.
No matter in a Heat-Lakers vs Gasol-Howard, Miami will desparately need production from a guy like Anthony, Haslem or maybe Pittman cuz banging on the inside and on the boards the whole game wont work with just Lebron and Bosh like it did against OKC.

Lebron’s HairlineParticipantYeah just make Dwight go left or put pressure on him as he’s indecisive in the post

HitsterParticipantThe only issue doing that is then the rest of the Heat roster have to cover all of the Lakers other offensive moves which with Kobe and Nash will spread the floor and as BasterdIAB says above having LeBron on D12 removes his help defence especially away from the basket.

justin_0atesParticipantAre you kidding me? there is no way lebron could guard dwight!! Don’t think think miami would have already tried this?? or cleveland?? considering how good dwight plays against miami especially. Peopl are really starting to over hype lebrons capabilities on D. Dont get me wrong. He is a phenominal player, But thinking he could guard dwight over a 7 game series is a joke. He would most definitly need help to stop dwight down low, resulting in tons of kick outs to the wing, as he has been use to seeing this type of help throughout his career in orlando. Come on guys get a grip!

iguapops420ParticipantLBJ has shown on switches that he can rotate and guard Dwight for a play here and there, but no way can he match Dwight’s physicality for an entire game. Too much, it’s gonna take Pittman realizing thr potential that MIA saw in him when drafted to stop Dwight down-low.

IndianaBasketballParticipantLeBron is a great defender who can defend four, maybe even five positions depending on the matchup… But let’s get real.

billykParticipantSure he could… Could Karl Malone guard Dwight, how about Rodman?? Lebron is built like a PF…

bloodis wrong with you? Dwight Howard is 6.10 250 center,Lebron is 6.8 2.50 he could guard him easily…its not like anybody said could he guard shaq… plus dwight is so limited offensively it wouldnt be a problem for lebron

Jr. ROXASParticipantOk, i don’t think dwight is still THAT limited offensively.. He has a good running hook and a decent shimmy shot

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantNot at all. Bosh would be the most qualified to guard Dwight, maybe even Haslem but LeBron would stand no chance. Not only that, he would only wear himself out faster.

IndianaBasketballParticipantI think LeBron’s ability to guard elite level big men has become overrated.
Can he defend an Elton Brand, Carlos Boozer, David West, Serge Ibaka, etc at power forward? Sure. But can he defend a Pau Gasol, Dirk Nowitzki (we sure didn’t see him defend Dirk in the 2011 NBA Finals), Lamarcus Aldridge, healthy Zach Randolph, etc for big stretches? NO WAY. Can he defend Kendrick Perkins, Joakim Noah, Tyson Chandler, etc? Sure. But can he defend Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Marc Gasol, Tim Duncan, Roy Hibbert, etc for long stretches? No way.
LeBron is a guy who can defend four or five positions, depending on the matchup. That’s still great, but I think people are taking it above the top.

TyroberParticipantLeBron can defend anyone in the entire league. Having said that…. he can’t defend everyone in the league all night long. He could easily guard Howard for a few possessions. If LeBron had to guard Howard for 10 straight possessions then LeBron is probably going to end up in foul trouble. Rondo can cover Rondo, Rose, Kobe, Howard or anyone else you want him too, but just don’t ask him to do it long because there isn’t anyone in the league than can contain any of those players.

iguapops420Participant^^^EXACTLY. LeBron may be built like a PF, but his game isn’t physical enough for that type of play. He even said it himself that he had a lot of trouble with the physical play down-low while playing the 4 beside of Haslem or Bosh. LBJ has become a terrific defender which I NEVER expected earlier on, but he isn’t a guy who is going to go out and defend any position for an entire game or else he would have guarded Dirk as Tezo pointed out instead of trying to chase Jason Terry around all over the place. Personally I’d rotate guys onto Dwight if I was Spoelstra starting with Joel as he is a fairly athletic big with some strength himself, throw Haslem at him next followed by Bosh with Pittman taking 3 minute stretches to try and bully Dwight a little a rough him up. LBJ I would possibly put on him in one critical position ho;ing he can get the big stop for me, but in no way would I EVER put him on him for an entire game, much less series.

HitsterParticipantThe logic is interesting but D12 would need the ball on offence for LeBron to actually have someone to guard so if the Heat but LeBron on D12 then the Lakers would just run their plays via Nash, Kobe and Gasol. Surely if you want to try nd stop the Lakers playing they maybe put LeBron on Nash and get him to close down his playmaking or it forces Kobe to carry the ball.

NbanflguyParticipantJust want to clarify that I was not saying that I think Lebron could guard Dwight. I was asking for peoples opinions on here
