DMO brought this to my attention in the Brooklyn Toronto Game 2 thread. I think it deserves its own thread. I dont necasseraly agree with everything he says but I do believe star plays do recieve favoritism from the referees. Also veterans get a ton of respect and room to operate. Players habits and reputation play a big role as well.Heres a few examples.

Paul Pierce did have 5 fouls tonight so it was nice to see him called on some. 5 hard to hide fouls I might add.

Joe Johnson and Deron Williams had a combined 3 fouls all on Deron and 1 of Williams fouls was in the last 20 seconds to put Toronto on the line. Livingston meanwhile had 5 fouls and was gaurding the same players as Johnson and Williams (Lowry and Derozan). Williams and Johnson also played 35 minutes each while Livingston played 25.

AK 47 played 20 minutes of active basketball and pesty defence yet was called for 1 foul. I think the refs view him as one of the greatest defenders during their refereeing tenures so they give him the benefit of the doubt. Meanwhile Alan Anderson plays 20 minutes and gets called on 4.

On the positive side of this it seems as though Derozan is earning some respect especially after these two physical games. He shot 14 free throws tonight although 6 were in the last minute. He gets handchecked, and forearms all game.

Jonas Valanciunas is building a reputation as a bruiser. He throws his elbows around all game and pushes around other bigs. Nets dans could make a case for him being fouled out in both games. The refs really let him throw around his weight and hes easily the most physical player so far this series.

     There’s no question.

If you don’t think the "Jordan rules" existed you’re either naive or literally 12 years old.

Look at guys like LeBron now. Or Kobe, especially game 7 in the 2010 finals, him and gasol got every superstar call you can imagine.

However it also trickles down into the NCAA. Bobby Knight had a great video about how Blake Griffin and Tyler Hansbrough would take anywhere from 4-6 steps and NOT get called for travels when they were in college.

But when it gets to the point where the refs are keeping track of fouls and not calling a foul just because it would be foul #3 or 4 or 5 whatever on a player, you are official altering (at least) and almost fixing games.

What do the Jordan rules have to do with this?

I’ve watched every Thunder game this season and I can honestly say Durant rarely gets preferential treatment from the refs.  This is especially true with the Grizzlies…  I’ve never seen a defender get the liberties Tony Allen gets while defending Durant.

I’ve seen about one full game from Durant this year against my Suns and P.J. Tucker was giving him an awfully hard time until the refs decided to constantly blow the whistle in the second half. He went from like 11 point on a terrible percentage to over 30…
