Brace94ParticipantWhy do European players get so much hype? I honestly dont remember the last Eurpean player who has an all around game besides Tony Parker. They can either just shoot, or they can pass. Absolutely no Europeans hit the weight room because they are too lazy to work hard. Maybe 2 out of 10 European players drafted end up being decent! so why would you draft one…

JoeWolf1There is some risk in taking European players because of contract negotiations from their teams over seas, but 2 of every 10 are decent? You could say that about all players drafted. Out of 60 players drafted every season I’d say only 12-20 end up doing anything, only a handfull of second rounders even make a roster. I think your stereotypes of European basketball players are stuck in the 90’s. There are plenty of solid, balanced Euro players that do hit the weight room. I can’t tell if this is a joke post or not, or if you really just don’t watch basketball.

Brace94ParticipantHow does that make me racist?! im just stating the facts. Just look at their arms. Dirk, Dragic, Manu, Parker, they are all sticks! if they hit the weight room more often then they could be way better than they already are!

Sasha Kaun
Linas Kleiza
Boris Diaw
Mikeal Petrus
Ronny Turiaf
Mehmet Okur
Hedo TurkogluAgain just off the top of my head, this site has African skinny, Euro skinny, what next??

mb666ParticipantDid you watch the FIBA championship? Four players that made the all-tournament team play in the NBA:
1) Luis Scola
2) Linas Kleiza
3) Hedo Turkoglu
4) Kevin Durant (MVP)Three of these played in the European game (Scola, Argentinian) and arguably have all around games… none are soft. I’m looking forward to watching Linas Kleiza. In Denver he was unable to showcase much of his talents and became a one-dimensional player (3 pt shooter). Those who saw him in Missouri University knew how talented he was.
Kleiza signed with the Toronto Raptors following a one-year departure to Olympiakos in Greece. He led the Euroleague (most competitive league) overall in scoring. He really honed his skills. Unfortunately he struggled against the U.S. Igoudala did a great job defending him and its tough to play a one-man iso game in Fiba play. Here’s some clips from his Greek days:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zagIaN-dT5U
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhzKFHJiSLU&feature=relatedHe will have much greater freedom on Toronto because he will not be playing behind Carmelo Anthony.
Another guy you Ricky Rubio fans need to google is Milos Teodosic. Although he is older than Rubio, and far mare skilled. Teodosic is a 6″5 point guard who is deceivingly quick, tremendous passer and crafty ballhandler. What mostly separates him from Rubio is his shooting. Rubio has an edge on defense though.
NBA is a league of role players and a lot of guys are one-dimensional. Think of how many college players were all around players but stuck to their bread and butter professionally. Eduardo Najera was a beast on offense in Oklahoma. He used to shoot threes very well. It’s possible that you may be overlooking European players because your bias of them being “great shooters” overlooks what else they do. Most players in the NBA have a few roles. Only superstars excel in every part of the game.
Here is a list of international players in the NBA:

If given the opportunity, a few them can showcase skills that we aren’t aware of. On an American example, Amare Stoudemire is actually a decent 3 point shooter. But if you have several teammates that are even better 3 point shooters and your more efficient in the post, then its not wise, tactically, to wonder around the 3pt line. So although Amare may be a good 3 point shooter, he is motivated to stick to his guns and we don’t see that part of his game.

Brace94Participantim so happy Rubio didnt come to the T-Wolves! he cant shoot worth crap and he is skinny as my arm back in 5th grade! he is going to want to get traded and i will be happy when we do! And there are “big” players like the Gasols and Turkoglu, but they are muscular big! thats my point! if they lifted then they could be that much better!

JoeWolf1So what, Austin Daye and Kevin Durant are rail thin, its called genetics, Sasha Kaun, Linas Klieza, Marcin Gorat are all stacked. Some people build muscle easier and have greater genetic strength, not everyone can get a body like Lebron if they lift weights.

Brace94Participantyes i know that JoeWolf1, but the fact that most Europeans are skinny that means that a lot of them dont lift as much as they should to get better. i know that Durant and Daye didnt lift as much as they should. if Durant lifted a lot more he could take Lebron any day. i know he wouldnt be as big as Lebron but he would be better.

JoeWolf1I hear what youre saying, and there is some truth to that, but in my opinion, you can’t really catagorize all European players into that group. Once a player signs with an NBA team they hit the weight room just like any American player on that squad. Do you think Goran Dragic doesn’t lift weights with the team while Robin Lopez and Jason Richardson are hitting the gym? I don’t know enough about European training to say that they do lift weights as much as Americans, but each player’s workout regimine in the NBA is suited around their abilities. The NBA is full of specialists and if you excell at shooting like Dirk or KD the trainer isn’t going to put you on a 3,500 calorie diet and try to put 3 inches on your biceps for fear of losing your shot. Some guys are naturally big and can get away with that, but others can’t. I know I kinda got off track, and I hear what you’re saying, but you could say a lot of the same things about various American players.
