    Dieter sets national receiving record

    by Pete Sampson

OUTH BEND, Ind. – By the time South Bend (Ind.) Washington High School head coach Antwon Jones presented the game ball to Gehrig Dieter late Friday night, the record-breaking receiver barely had the energy to lift it.

For the three hours prior, in a game delayed by temperatures in the mid-90s, Dieter had pieced together a career highlight reel with two Notre Dame assistant coaches watching from the end zone.

The numbers were beyond gaudy: a national record 447 yards receiving and three touchdowns.

He may have cost himself more if he didn’t also add a 47-yard interception return for a score as part of Washington’s 63-10 blowout of Elkhart Central.

"It was fun," Dieter said. "At the beginning of the game I didn’t think I was going to get that many yards, but Coach Jones knows my ability to play, just threw it up a whole bunch of times. I came up with the national record.

"It feels good, but at the same time without the offensive line blocking, without the quarterback throwing, I wouldn’t have the record."

For the season, Dieter has approximately 30 catches for 1,163 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Neither Dieter nor Jones apologized for hunting the national receiving record Friday night, which included Washington throwing a play action pass from its own 10-yard line early in the fourth quarter, which Dieter hauled in for a 90-yard touchdown to go with scores from 70 and 66 yards.

    Gehrig Dieter

"Bottom line, their defense is supposed to stop us," Jones said.

Washington continued to throw in the final minutes against the backdrop of a running clock, that following a bench clearing brawl that ended with the ejection of an Elkhart player and Notre Dame commit, David Perkins.

Dieter’s final catch came against triple coverage, the receiver snaring a fade route along the Washington sideline.

That will go down as Dieter’s favorite of the night.

"I think the record breaker because I was triple covered and I got hurt on it," Dieter said. "I think I false started but they didn’t call it, I think they had two people pressing me, I got off that and threw it up. I just went up and got it. I think I landed wrong on my knee, I came up sore."

"I was just super happy, super excited. I told Jones, ‘just throw it up and I’ll go get it.’ "

For all the national attention that’s found Dieter the past three weeks, it’s yet to materialize into BCS conference offers.

Seven programs from the Mid-American Conference have extended scholarships, as has SMU.

Even if local school Notre Dame doesn’t jump into the picture, Dieter’s profile appears primed for a change.

Both Oregon and Iowa have increased their interest in recent weeks, with Auburn a presence since a summer visit to the defending national champion.

IndianaPurdueCalifornia and Wisconsin are also involved, according to Dieter.

As for potential leaders, last year’s BCS title game participants stand out.

"Really I think Auburn just because of (quarterback) Zeke Pike and coach (Trooper Taylor) and coach (Gus) Malzahn. I have a good relationship with them already," Dieter said. "Coach (Scott) Frost, we have a good relationship. He wants my kind of receiver. They need that kind of receiver.

Really would be nice if he became a Duck. Our receivers were not looking good last night. I knew we would miss Jeff Maehl and DJ Davis, just had no idea how much.

Oregon really misses Jeff Maehl…. he was a special player for them, Oregon shot themselves in the foot last night, severe case of fumbilitis

Jeff was damn special, I knew we would miss him, just had no idea how bad. He was great though, I really hope he sticks around the NFL. Have a feeling he will. We killed ourselves last night, the fumbles were just unfortunate. Kenjon’s was awful, Mamba’s were basically due to him being so damn small.

Still, Mamba is going to be a star. We just do not have the combo of size and speed on the front line that the SEC teams have. They are insane, there is a reason their recruiting classes are so dope. LaMichael James is truly amazing, I am not hating on our line, but if he had Auburn or LSU’s line, this kid would not just be breaking Pac-12 records, he would be breaking NCAA records. Our receivers were a major let down, knew they were taking a step down, but we had no speed outside of our RB’s, which is crazy.

I really do not think Jordan Jefferson or any of the LSU guys suspended would have made much of a difference. Jarrett Lee, to me, sucked, but there RB’s just kept grinding. Darron Thomas was not at his best, but our receivers did not help much, he had a lot of pressure and he still makes some questionable throws (got REALLY lucky in the 4th when Mathieu dropped a potential pick 6). Still, I feel we hung in there other than the TO’s a penalties. We had really high hopes after last year, but we still are a few steps away from Elite. We have some amazing skill players and even some defensive play makers (Boyett, Michael Clay and hopefully Cliff Harris comes back soon, we missed him hard core). Really hope we go back to the Rose Bowl, I would probably go again. We have a very bright future, but we still need to get better personnel on the front line.

I like LaMichael as much as the next guy, but he wouldn’t be breaking Barry Sanders records no matter who his line was.

From South Bend. Was at the game. He was 4 inches taller than every DB, nonetheless it was a hell of a performance. I know his sister. It sucks for him cus hes a good kid but everyone in town hates his Dad. There is alot of ego involved. His best shot is to go somehwere like IU, who just got the #2 QB next year and start right away. If he goes to Auburn or Oregon he will sit for a year or two before any tick.

Though, I would not completely put it past him. I was more talking about All-Time record for rushing yardage, still held by Ron Dayne. The record is 6,397 yards, while LaMichael is currently at 3,331. Barry rushed for 3,778 yards for his Oklahoma career, albeit 2,850 of them were during his senior year (It is usually counted as being 2,628 yards, as Bowl Games were not counted). I could not expect LaMichael James to do better than that season, but I do believe that if he were to play the next couple season with that type of line, Ron Dayne’s record would be sniped.

As is, LaMichael is indeed on track to break it anyway if he plays the next two seasons at a similar level to his first two. Also, I will add, that he only rushed twice (for 22 yards) in his first collegiate game, as a back-up to LaGarrette Blount. He even was suspended for the first game of last year, a game that Kenjon Barner picked up 147 yards and 4 TD’s on the ground (plus a 60 yard TD on his only reception). Had LaMichael been able to pad his stats in that game, I am guessing he at least would have had more of a case for the Heisman voters, who do look at stats hardcore (on top of wins). Nonetheless, I am not LaMichael is Barry Sanders, but I see a lot of similarity.

No, LaMichael does not have the 4 300 yard games Barry had in his mythical junior year, but from a career standpoint, the guy has been phenomenal. I never expected him to be Barry Sanders, but considering he just broke the school rushing record one game into his junior year, can you blame me for making these comparisons? Even when he has been bad, he has been a factor. 2 TD’s in the championship last year, over 100 combined yards against LSU with a score. Not to mention his utter torching of USC, Washington and Oregon St the past couple years. I am obviously biased, but I think you at least have to give me that if we did indeed have a better line, LaMichael James might be in the NCAA record book in some capacity.

@mikeyv…. one reciever i was impressed with was lavasier tuinei, they should have targeted him more. I think he had 7 catches for 50 yards but he would catch it in high traffic areas and take multiple big hits and still try nd fight for yards. I’ll be keeping my eyes on him, i liked what he did

Lavasier Tuinei is definitely our #1 receiver this year, and he will get plenty of targets. The biggest issue with Lavasier, at least in my mind, is that he has had a hard time creating separation. He is 6’5 and around 220, but he lacks top flight speed (although it was initially reported he ran a 4.5, I think that is false). At the very least, however, he has good hands and will fight for yardage.

He is not Jeff Maehl though, you were right about him being special. Did you know that Jeff broke the NFL combine record in the 3 cone drill? That kid just had something, I have a feeling he will be on some roster as a decent receiver, have no clue why he was not drafted. If he does indeed stick with the Texans, I think that would be a great place for him.

We have a lot of potential, Josh Huff could turn into a star at receiver. He showed flashes last year, initially he came in as a RB, but he had some great moments as a receiver and kick returner. Unfortunately, Huff had been injured most of training camp, hence his limited returns. Justin Hoffman was a walk-on, but he has good hands and is our best blocking receiver.

After those three, things get incredibly iffy. We were using another walk-on, Will Murphy, which I was not thrilled about. Rahsaan Vaughn dropped an opportunity, he was a JUCO All-American we just added who I hoped would play more of a role. He still has a chance, but after game 1, our receiving unit worries me. We have two others with some potential in Daryle Hawkins, a 6’4 and 200 pound athletic converted QB and Eric Dungy, who is the son of ex-NFL coach Tony Dungy. Like his dad, Eric is tough as nails.

Even with all of those listed, I was hoping for more of a change-up and speed attack, which would have come in the form of our freshman. I knew that DeAnthony Thomas would be seeing time at the TAZR, which is basically a slot receiver position that he appeared to excel at. He is going to be a big part in our receiving game, and while he had those two fumbles, to me he looked like a future superstar. Unfortunately, however, our two true freshman with top flight speed did not make the travel squad. Devon Blackmon, the 23rd rated prospect in the ESPN 150, more than likely has a very bright future. Still, whether he plays this year is yet to be determined. Also, we got a kid from Florida named Tacoi Sumler, who is said to have sub 4.3 speed. He is only 5’8 and 160, so I was not sure about his readiness either.

Bottom line, I really hope that our receiving unit plays better in this next game, and I would love to see us make more plays down the field. DT averaged only 4.4 yards per pass, and we only averaged 7.7 ypc. We have a lot of speed and talent at RB, but our playing receivers outside of Huff seem to be mostly possession guys. Considering our offense averaged around 47 points per game last year, we definitely need to pick things up. David Paulson is a guy I could see being a huge factor as our TE, but he was limited against LSU. Another sleeper from the TE, who unfortunately only played on special teams, is true freshman Colt Lyerla. Colt is an athletic freak, and I truly expect that he could probably do some damage in the receiving game. I trust Chip Kelly knows what he was doing, but, I worry about this team constantly. I have a lot of faith in Chip to turn things around, hopefully we look a lot better against Nevada.
