Memphis and Cleveland just started the first moves this season.

    http://m.espn.go.com/nba/story?storyId=8868058

The Memphis Grizzlies have agreed to a multiplayer trade with the Cleveland Cavaliers, slicing more than $6 million off their payroll to get under the luxury tax threshold, league sources told ESPN.com.

A trade call to finalize the deal is scheduled for Tuesday.

The Grizzlies would send big man Marreese Speights, guard Wayne Ellington and guard Josh Selby to the Cavs for big man Jon Leuer. There are also believed to be a future draft pick involved in the deal.

Reducing payroll both short- and long-term has been a goal of the new Grizzlies ownership and led to other trade talks involving Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph over the past several weeks.

It will be interesting to see if this is the first step for a bigger move involving Gay or Randolph.

Interestingly the Grizzlys now receive a 6 mil $ trade exception.

I wonder if they’ll wait until the offseason to make a big move then? Could see something done around the draft now since they will be under the luxury tax. Might as well ride the season out because I don’t think anyone wants to face the Grizzlies in the playoffs.

With this move the Grizz are out of the lux tax area. They don’t have to move Gay or Randolph anymore.

This depletes their already weak bench. They probably end up signing a D-Leaguer at the 2

Grizz HAVE to sign somebody. Their roster is down to 11 now.
Delonte? Oh man i hope they sign Delonte.

Delonte would help the Grizz so much. He’s a better shooter, defender and PG than anyone on their bench. It’s a shame he can’t keep it together.

Grizz also gave up a 2015 first round pick as well. Top 5 protected.
    Ouch.
Cavs made out like bandits, but then again this wasn’t a winnable deal for the Grizz.

I wonder if Selby gets any PT. If not, he might not be in the league next yr.

He might not, They’ve moved Waiters to a 6th man position and Jeremy Pargo beat him out for minutes last year in Memphis and he’s pretty much the same player as Boobie Gibson and those are just the guys being brought off the bench right now.

Pargo got waived. So maybe he’ll get the opportunity.

Grizzlies will be contenders in 2014/15 so I supose that this 2015 first round pick would be mid-20s. Not that bad

@Siggy. Cavs seem to do whatever it takes to get 1st round picks, but this time they actually got a solid player in Speights as well. Definitely a win for them!

Chris Vernon: BREAKING: Grizzlies are going to sign former Knick Bill Walker and former Celtic Delonte West. Also will sign Sasha Vujacic. Twitter @ChrisVernonShow

According to Chris Vernon, these are the three players going to Memphis…

      Nice.
Delonte already makes their backcourt better than it was.
Billy Walker’s whatever and Sasha umm…adds to the diversity of the team.

I doubt that Anadolu Efes would allow Vujacic to go. He is under contract and they’re playing well in Euroleague. This would ruined their ambitions

Billy Badd Ass! I was wondering when he would get another shot, he will be a decent role player off the bench that will come in and knock down open 3s.

    A few things for me.

    1) Darrell Arthur is now completely healthy and Memphis is sure of it and ready to give him big minutes again(20-25)
    2) I think this means Rudy Gay may not be traded until the offseason or later. Unless Memphis gets offered something unreal.
    3) I still think Josh Selby rides the bench. Already a lot of minutes spoken for between Kyrie and Waiters.

so here is essentially the trade with all this information

Grizzlies get -Jon Leuer, Delonte West, Bill Walker, Sasha Vujacic
Cavs get- Marreese Speights, Josh Selby, Wayne Ellington, and the Grizzlies 2015 first round pick

I just saw that those rumored Grizz signings aren’t official. West and Walker are under consideration, while Vujacic is still under contract in Europe.

This move was made so that they can keep Gay and Randolph for this season, then make a decision in the off season whether they wanna trade one of them and I think thats the way to go If it aint broke don’t fix it

If, in fact, Memphis signs Delonte West, Bill Walker, and Sasha Vujacic, then the only difference in their roster is a little bit of bulk by going from Speights to Leuer. I don’t make too much scattershot of 91 minutes and 28 shots so far this year. Last year, he showed himself to be functional when given 10, 20, or even 30 minutes. When Gasol or Randolph get in foul trouble or need rest against some of the bigger Western Conference frontcourts, they might have to go to Haddadi for the extra size, but given the cap implications it is the best possible outcome.

The problem is that they are kicking the can down the road. They are going to be in the same spot next year with $68 million committed to only Randolph, Gasol, Gay, Conley, Arthur, Bayless, Pondexter, and Wroten. They are going to need to either retain or replace Tony Allen, and that is easier said than done.

As for Cleveland, it is another pick. I feel bad for Wayne Ellington because he was fitting in nicely with Memphis. With this being another lost season, they can probably stand to see if they can get anything out of Josh Selby. On a team with a great point guard in Kyrie Irving, I don’t see the value in adding another guy who wants to dominate the ball. They already have Waiters and Miles wanting to control the ball. As for Speights, they need a big man to help get them through the season.

John Hollinger has a reputation as a great numbers guy, this trade proves it…..This also eases some of the stress and tension the team had been feeling recently becuz of all the uncertainly……But they still need to give coach Hollins an extension,he earned it…..

With this deal,They now have 72 million dollars in commited salaries this season..But When Tony Allen deals comes off the book this summer, that’ll put them at 65 million dollars, giving them 5 million to pay Tony Allen, their inspirational leader…

GM Chris Wallace had a hand in this, last week he told a tv station that the team always play well against the league top teams and they’re so close to bringing a title to Memphis….And he would’ve do all he could to keep the core players 2gether..

The Cavs now have an abundance of combo guards, they might be making more deals..Selby or Pargo might be cut…..

I hate seeing Speights leave,he blossomed in Memphis, played great while Randolph was out last season…He might be the Cavs starter, now that Varejao is out for the season..Speights has proven he’s a capable starter, his stats might be something like 13 pts/7 rbs…..

I like the versatility Delonte West brings,i also heard they gave Micheal Redd a workout about 2 weeks ago….I think he still has something to offer…

I’m glad the lockout we had which “fixed” the luxury tax system and made it more fair for smaller market teams is working so well.

Regardless, I like this trade a lot for the Cavs, especially with Varejao out for the year.

Super happy about this trade, always thought Selby had star power that was always untouched. Hopefully he really gets his chance with the Cavaliers.

In the end really a trade that works pretty well for both teams when you consider the luxury tax savings in Memphis along with keeping the starting five intact or wait for a better deal for Gay.

The Pickup of West is also a nice move. The Grizzlys bench ist still stacked and maybe someone like Xavier Henry has a little room to grow and play more minutes.

The Cavs have a nice replacement for Varejao, a deeper roster with help at the wing!

    Great move for both teams!

Sam Young isn’t a good shooter and the Grizz need floor spacing.

Young got waived by Indiana when he severely sprained his ankle, I don’t know if there is a ‘wink wink’ deal with Indiana to re-sign him when he is healthy enough to return to action or not.

So the only official Grizz signing since the trade news broke has been Chris Johnson, a D-Leaguer.
Word is that they’re not sold on adding D.West, Billy Walker’s out of shape and Sasha wouldn’t be able to come over til later since he’s under contract.

    There goes those rumors.
