so last month JV dominated against his own age group and won the U19 tittle and got the mvp, he was avraging 23 and 14 (off the top of my head)

alot of people said it was impressive but that he would struggle against his own age group (which is understandable cause he is 19)

with his steler performance he was placed on the national team (only 19 year old that made the team)

so now he is playing against the big guys and apprently he is playing really well

his team faced chez rebulic last night ( vs Jan vesely – 2 years older)

Jonas Valanciunas put up 26 points and 11 rebounds in the win

    link – http://www.examiner.com/nba-draft-in-national/lithuania-s-jonas-valanciunas-impressive-eurobasket-2011-preparation-game

obviously has a lot more to prove but looks promising …. think he should have gone top 2

you gotta keep in mind, overseas hes considered a freak athlete where he can just catch lobs on everyone and outrun everyone…In the nba hes about a birdman type athletem which is good but not anywhere near some dominant amare/dwight type athlete just bullying people…not to mention more euro players take a while to adjust when they come over so hes not gonna do much for about 4 years….but who knows, he could be a game changer in the long run or he could be j-mcgee

Jonas will face some REAL competition on saturday when he plays vs. Spain. He will have to go against the Gasols in the post. now that will be really interesting. Playing against the Czech republic he only proved that he can bang with the bigger guys, but Gasols are even bigger and have skills, unlike the Czech players.

Bron42 I dont see how he could be a Javale Mcgee because they simply dont play the same but I had Cleveland taking him in my mock because the would have been a great pair together and the Cavs would already have a pg and C for the future which are very important roles to teams because they do stuff that the other 3 positions dont do like a pg runs a team and is the facilitator .The center is usually the defensive anchor and the main rebounder. With those 2 spots already filled the Cavs could draft a good forward in this years draft and be on there way to a championship caliber team in 5 years.

after watching that vid Jonas reminds of me Tim Duncan .He has his running hook, pick and roll game, same freethrow ,rebounding and defense , and he finishes around the rim like Timmy .But Timmy also is all around better player and Jonas doesnt have Duncans face up game

It was an impressive performance but keep in mind that Jan Vesely did not play. I am not trying ot take away from his performance but I thought that it shold be noted that Vesely was not there.

I think Dan Gilbert made a big mistake not taking him at 4.  Tristan Thompson has a lot of potential and I’m not going to deny that, but he doesn’t have potential at the center position, which is extremely hard to find these days, nor is his offensive skill set very far along.  I love a great defensive minded power forward, but in today’s NBA I think chosing a skilled NBA ready center over a raw power forward is a no brainer.

How about Nene? A more offensively agressive Biedrins? A bigger Joakim Noah?  Can we please stop throwing out a first ballot hall of famer and top 10 player of all time like its likely?

Timmy at this age had range out to twenty, could handle the ball with profiency and was a lock to be a top 10 shot blocker in the league. He was also the lock for the #1 pick since his sophomore year.

Like I said in another thread on the exact same topic, Caech Republic is a bad team, actaully they are quite horrible. Portugal’s team is ranked higher in the Fiba Rankings. They are a non threat. Also Lithuania is stacked, and has all the right peices for Valanciunas to really thrive. This was also a scrimmage type game. I am waiting to see how he plays against the Gasols, Nowitzki, and real talented big men in which the keyword is "men". Although I do believe the hype somewhat, I am not ready to say he is the next Duncan, or the next Garnett, or something out of content.

To even think Jonas Valanciunas has a post game/skill set that is slighty similar to the calibur of Tim Duncan’s is beyond idiotic! Tim Duncan’s extreme fundimentals within the post game is beyond any NBA players comprehension before or after his time. Valanciunas barely even has a post game, he just has great position, great screen setting skills and pick and roll skills, and good PG’s who know how to play with and setup bigmen in the right position.

On the Duncan comparison.  I think the direction could have some truth.  Maybe call him Tim Duncan Lite, or a poor man’s Duncan.  Seriously though, he seems to be more of a combination of a few people.  I like the Noah comparison, with maybe some McGee, and Bargniani (His postmoves and drives look similar right now).

Comparisons to Gasol is pretty off as he came out as a small forward.  Jonas is coming out as a near lock center.  Not saying that he cannot develop into a player fo Gasol’s level, as he has the ability, and if he works really hard can get the skills

This is one of those combo comparisons, or difficult to compare type of guys.  He’ll be good, and will be different.

I’m still liking the more offensively gifted Biedrins comparison. Which is one heck of a player actually.

Take out the injuries and you have a really good center.  He will probably be a little thicker too.  He says he wants to be like D. Howard, so he will probably hit the weights pretty hard, and get strong.  Won’t be pulling a Superman at the dunk competition though.

What about an offensive Gortat?.  There is another comparison to think about.

I posted this in the other JV thread, but I don’t think a lot of people saw it, so I’ll post it again.

These kinds of threads scare me because of the expectations being placed upon him by many fans.. already receiving praise as our ‘franchise C’ and such in posts here.. and when the day comes and if he doesn’t perform up to these expectations you’re going to see a similar instance unfold..

I love his game and I think he’s a solid young center with great basketball acumen for his age, you rarely find young Centers that are this advanced IQ wise and play like a 30 + year old Center. However, I think it is important to note his glaring weaknesses including his strength, foul rate, no left hand, and not much of a back to the basket game/threat. He possesses one main move with his back to the basket and its a sweep to the right either for a dunk/layup/hook. He’s inevitably going to get overplayed to his left shoulder and they will force him to go the other way and since he won’t be able to back down he’s going to pass it out or have to try facing up more often (which his face up game I’m still not very enamored with like some other people here).

He’s going to have to show a consistent catch and shoot mid range ala Nesterovic at the NBA level and he should be able to develop that quite easily with time. We’ve only seen him take a few shots so far from mid range and they’ve been money.

The reason his weaknesses scare me is because at the NBA level these are glaring, and he can get away with it at the Euro level against less menacing bigs. His motor and drive will help him excel and do well beyond what he’s capable of in terms of his game in his first few years, but his propensity to foul and his size is going to hurt him in his first few years against the likes of Dwight, Horford, Bogut, etc. This is why keeping your hopes a bit lower is going to get you a long way in appreciating what he brings to the table once he comes into the NBA instead of placing him on a pedestal as ‘another’ franchise savior which he is certainly not.
