Josh Smith To Be Traded For Ricky Rubio?
The Wiz were the first team that jumped into my head when I read that, until I got to the part about the 6 million dollar payout. I'm really not sure they'd want to pay it, but if they did they seem the most likely to move on something like that, at least to me.
Doubt anyone will bite ultimately though.
I wouldnt lose sleep over losing Josh Smith or losing Marvin Williams for draft picks. Now if those picks dont materialize (they would probably select Jennings or a pf/c like Jordan Hill) thats when I would have a problem with it lol
Franchise is looking to cut payroll so Smith probably can be had for expiring contract and/ picks. If their smart they trade him, let Bibby & Marvin Williams go no need to overpay for them. Imagine this team with Paul & Deron instead of Marvin Williams.
Isn't his contract pretty affordable? I thought it was. Plus, why would they get rid of a hometown kid? That would only give him a HUGE CHIP on his shoulder to shove it in their face everytime he plays against them. That's not a smart move on AtL's part.
They should let Bibby walk. He's a fine PG, as long as you don't mind matador defense. But Atlanta could grab a PG with pick 19 (probably Maynor or Lawson) and let him & Law battle it out for PT. They'd save plenty of money with that move & while the short-term PG play might suffer, in a couple years I think they'd be fine at that spot & I don't think they're passing CLE, BOS or ORL in 2010 so they can be a little patient.
I can't remember the details but I know he butted heads with his coach last season. I think it was because he was playing lazy defense of taking too many jumpers or something.
His contract is 48 million over the next 4 years.
IMO if the Hawks can lose him and get some draft picks they should pull the trigger.
Say the Hawks trade Josh Smith to the Thunder for the #3 pick, and maybe an Earl Watson or Nick Collison or Acie Law gets thrown in the mix. And the Thunder can swap their #25 pick for the Hawks #19 pick. Then, the Hawks draft Ricky Rubio.
To lose Josh Smith would hurt
I thing Smith to Memphis is a good idea. memphis gets a power forwad like player while adding good help defense and shot blocking that thabeet would bring meanwhile they continue to add athleticism to an impressive bunch. Atl can then either add thabeet to move horford to his natural 4 spot or they can FINALLY shore up pg with rubio win win all the way around. Memphis has plenty of cap room to make the deal. they can use a trade exemption or bloated Buckner like contracts to even things out
In 2001, the Hawks drafted Pau Gasol (Barcelona, Spain) with the #3 pick, then traded him to the Grizzlies for Shareef Abdur-Rahim (Marietta, GA).
What if they did the same thing involving either the Grizzlies or the #3 pick, Josh Smith (College Park, GA), & Ricky Rubio (Barcelona, Spain)?
Also, the Hawks could redeem themselves with the #2 pick. Remember in 2005, the Hawks picked Marvin Williams over PGs Chris Paul and Deron Williams.
Wow, this draft could get really interesting for the ATL Hawks!
I love Josh Smith. Let him come to New York. He averages more blocks than our whole team. Atlanta is dumb to dismantle their young core. They are finally exciting. They are a lock for the playoffs and no rookie in this draft class will be able to step up and replace Smith. If they do this then I guarantee Johnson leaves next year.
...with the money saved on Josh Smith and Mike Bibby, the Hawks could resign Marvin Williams AND possible lure Lamar Odom away from the beach for a guaranteed starting position. While next year may not be as promising as it could be if you resigned Bibby, drafted Lawson, and kept Smith; the future could be really bright in the ATL.
Plus, Smith and Woodson are clearly not getting along. If you believe that Smith can be a top twenty player, then get rid of Woodson. If you believe Smith's pride and ignorance will prevent him from maturing into the player he CAN become, then get as much for him as you can! I, for one, believe the latter.
Uhh ya the dude would go to Memphis aka the only team that can afford the buyout. Not washington. they can't even afford a rookie contract which is why they want out of the top 10. Memphis is the choice by far. Who needs a PF? Who has the money? Who has a guaranteed spot at Rubio? If the trade happens it will be Memphis. No doubt in my mind. Actually that's not a bad trade. Very nice. 2 gm's that don't do a lot of thinking put their heads together and did something right, assuming it goes down.
I would love to see Smith in Memphis, because he is just what we need (as long as he doesnt try to keep shooting 3s). But I dont think the Grizzlies can trade for him because they signed his offer sheet. The Hawks cant trade him to the team that signed the offer sheet until August 15th. I guess they could still get in the mix, but Im sure that the Hawks want the picks they trade him for to work out with their summer team and go through their training camps.
Memphistilldie made a very important point. This means that it'll probably have to be OKC who trades with the Hawks for them to get Rubio. This also works because Rick Sund used to be the GM for the Sonics, and OKC wants Lamar Odom but it is highly unlikely Odom will move to Oklahoma City, and Josh Smith is a younger Lamar Odom.
Why do they need eight symbols to mark out a 4 letter word? Actually memphistilidie that only applies if the hawks use it and they wouldn't if they want the deal to work.
If they could get a legit point guard they should keep that team intact. Smith is a good shot blocker and rebounder, but he has to develop more offense. They need a strong center in the middle who boards and block shots too.
~ Mike Bibby? I love him, but he's not going to be worth the money he'll demand.
~ Ramon Sessions? I was a huge Sessions fan until I saw on 82games.com [http://www.82games.com/0809/0809MIL2.HTM] that the Bucks offense was actually more productive when Luke Ridnour was running it. Ouch!
~ Raymond Felton? He's just not very efficient. I'd rather have Bibby, back.
~ Ricky Rubio? Yes. He ran the silver medal team in the 2008 Olympics, and he wasn't even 20!
You wanna a legit PG, it's Rubio!
Where have you read that OKC wants odom? That sounds pretty outlandish to me...not a very Presti move...and I don't think they would trade their pick for Josh smith...another forward instead of drafting a SG or C? Makes little sense
The only team I can see shelling out 6 mil would be NY, but they seem to really keen on taking a pg. Probably because in the summer '10 that's one of the few positions that seem to be lacking.
Rubio would be a good fit there but only if smith is there because he is the best finisher on the brake. I see Rubio as more of a fast brake point who will not be as effective in the halfcourt set. They need a point who can handle the fast brake and find the shooters and finishers like Smith so Rubio would fit here.
An Atlanta/OKC trade? I guess something like Smith for Rubio, Watson, and Collison would work since Atlanta wants cap relief.
The only thing is that Rubio may not want to play in Atlanta. Not only because of the team but also because the future is uncertain there.
Marvin Williams is a free agent who could leave this summer. Johnson may leave next year or even demand a trade since Atlanta would basically be in rebuilding mode.
Of course, OKC wins the deal with a young PF like Smith who can join the youth movement with Durant, Green, and Westbrook.
Memphis would die to have Josh Smith on their Roster. If we can get smith in exchange for the 2 pick without mayo and gay being involved this will happen. Do not sleep on this.
I guess I don't understand how using one guy (Josh Smith) to be able to pay for three guys (Marvin Williams, Flip Murray, Zaza Pachulia) or four guys (Solomon Jones) or five guys (Mario West) means the Hawks are rebuilding. If anything, this is moving forward.
Without Smith and Bibby's salaries on the books for next year, the Hawks can resign most of their guys from last year, plus add a major player through FA, like a Lamar Odom or Carlos Boozer or Hedo Turkoglu or Charlie Villaneuva. Guys will go where the money is, and the Hawks would have the money.
You say rebuilding. I say improving.
It's all about what you believe in Josh Smith. If you believe that Smith can be a top 20 player, then get rid of Woodson. If you believe Smith's pride and ignorance will prevent him from maturing into the player he CAN become, then get as much for him as you can! I, for one, believe the latter. Just remember what he did in Game 5 in the playoffs vs. Miami.

Listen to what Mike Fratello says after the botched between the legs dunk.
That's where I stand.
dumb trade if they tryna win now because rubio is not ready to come in and start and do anything..for one his game isnt ready for that and 2 he still will need at least a year and a half or 2 to adjust to the nba game...dumb trade
To Bulls: Chris Bosh, Patrick O'Bryant, Acie Law and Speedy Claxton
To Hawks: Tyrus Thomas, Brad Miller and Nathan Jawai
To Raptors: Josh Smith, Luol Deng and a 1st Round Pick
http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=ly4uhy
It seems to solve each teams needs, for the most part.
The Bulls get their man in Chris Bosh. The Hawks get to save money, which they want to do. The Raptors get nice young players under long-term contracts and a 1st round pick to build on and replace Bosh and Marion with.
I LOVE IT!!!
Feedback?

No way the Hawks do that trade, if they did I'd follow another team. lol
If the Hawks are trying to save money, why not? It rates out a plus 1 for the Hawks.
Because we won't be as good. Josh Smith is a beast and still young. No way they would do that if they'd only get those 3 in return. Either deal him for a a high draft pick or a very good PG/PF/C.
That might be the best they can do.

If they didn't want to cut salary, I would say give them Hinrich instead of Miller.
Why don't the Hawks just get rid of Woodson?
Josh Smith is a great player. I hope the Mavericks go after him.
i just read why josh most likely wont get traded..his contract has him as a base player and other teams dont think hes worth that base pay they would be giving him

Chad Ford just wrote about it. And the guys at the ajc.com are talking about it as well. Are there truths to these rumors? If so, who'd be willing to pay for Smith? Memphis? Oklahoma City? Washington? Interesting.
