The Kobe Assist
Thibs and Rose use this strategy a lot. Make Rose take shots and have the bigs wait for the O. Reb.
That strategy works better when a player who draws a ton of attention attacks the hoop. Derrick would often times take both the help defenders with him leaving o-board opportunities for the Bulls' bigs. Plus a closer shot in the paint = shorter rebound.
Summary to the entire article lol: "I define the Kobe Pass as the missed shot that begets an offensive rebound and thus extends an offensive possession."
used this with allen iverson in his prime philly days
what a horrible article. I can't think of any baller that misses a shot on purpose so that his teammate can get an offensive rebound. No coach and no player would do that. It doesn't make sense. Not only do players mess up their fg% but then they get critized by the fans and media for taking a bad shot. Plus 90% of the time a player can not control where the rebound will go on missed shot. The shot Kobe shot in that video...I'm hardly doubt he thought oh if I miss this its coming straight to Dwight. That shot was legit and he missed it and Dwight HAPPEN to get the rebound. How many times have you seen a player try to miss a FT at the end of the game so his team can get the offensive rebound for another possession only to have the other team get the rebound?
This article was a complete waste of time. Sometimes it seems like they get paid just to write...regardless of the article is even logical.
I think you are mis-understanding the point of the article? It's not suggesting players miss shots on purpose, it's merely commenting on the overall efficiency of an offense in terms of the sequence of the possession. Thus the comparison between Elton Brand and Derrick Rose mid-range shots shows that the bulls are more likely to score points on that particular possession than the sixer, regardless of whether the shot goes in or not. This just illustrates the way Derrick Rose draws the defenses attention and thus creates space on a possession, for both assists and in this case rebounds and putbacks.
This may sound stupid but I see the Heat get a lot of offensive rebounds when LeBron misses because he is so big and fast require the defense to help out and leaving the big alone under the basket for a easy offensive rebound ,he also makes the big man come on him because he can run the pick and roll leaving the other teams sf on (for example) Chris Bosh ,which leads to more offensive boards
shooting the ball when you know your teammate has the opponent boxed out.
