Memphis MadnessParticipantThe Lakers had a bad year — to say the least. They were supposed to contend at the very least, but they barely made the playoffs and lost Kobe to a gruesome injury.
Now, people want to know what to do with the team? Do they blow it up? Do they wait on Kobe to get back for one more run, or do they wager the future on Dwight Howard (scary thought)?
I personally think they should try to make a run with Kobe Bryant when he gets back sometime during next season.
How do they do this?
There are a lot of moving parts here so try to keep up.
First, they need to think about moving Pau Gasol. He and Kobe are making too much money, and fans will riot if they trade Kobe.
This deal would work: The Lakers trade Pau Gasol, the 48th pick in the draft, cash, and a future first round pick to the T Wolves for Nikola Pekovic (sign and trade), Dante Cunningham, and the 59th pick.
Then keep Kobe Bryant. He isn’t going anywhere and he is a super star when he is healthy.
Next question, what to do with Dwight Howard? Well, I would trade him. The Lakers have their center with Pek so I would try to get another star and some more scoring. The Lakers should trade Dwight Howard and a future second round pick to the Mavs for Dirk Nowitzki and Bernard James. Dirk gives the Lakers some more scoring to go with Kobe and we also get to see the Dirk and Nash reunion.
Then go out and try to get Chris Paul. They should save money from the Pek deal, plus the Lakers are always willing to spend.
Next, they need some perimeter scoring until Kobe gets healthy. They can move Goudelock, Steve Blake, and Chris Duhon to the Kings for John Salmons. The Kings get rid of a ball hog and the Lakers get a scorer (chucker) to give them some more offense on the wing.
This team is now rounding into shape. I wish the Lakers could keep Jordan Hill but they need to cut some salary. Plus, he is injured a lot. I think they can trade him to the Trailblazers for Jared Jeffries and the 39th pick. They can use Jeffries’ defense and then use the 39th pick on a big man or a shooter like Glenn Rice, Jr.
They have a very good team now, and they still have a few draft picks. With the Blazers pick they can go with Glenn Rice, Jr. With the 59th pick from the T Wolves they can go with Ryan Kelly as a stretch four with 3 point range.
The Grizzlies are really good, but they need a shooter. The Lakers could trade Jodie Meeks and his $1.5 million salary to the Grizzlies for the 41st and 55th picks. The Lakers save some money and they can go bargain hunting.
With those picks they can go with Kenny Kadji as an active shot blocker. At 55, they can go with Peyton Siva to give them some youth at point guard.
New Look Lakers:
Starters:
PG: Chris Paul
SG: Kobe Bryant
SF: Metta World Peace
PF: Dirk Nowitzki
C: Nikola PekovicBench:
PG: Steve Nash
SG: Glenn Rice, Jr.
SF: John Salmons
PF: Dante Cunningham
C: Bernard JamesReserves:
PG: Peyton Siva
PF: Jared Jeffries
PF: Ryan Kelly
C: Kenny KadjiThat’s a great mix of scoring and size. They obviously have some great veterans, but Chris Paul is only 28 and could be there for years. Pek isn’t too old either. Then they have some young guys like Rice, Dante Cunningham, Bernard James, and Ryan Kelly.
What do you guys think?

ph90702The Lakers should be accumulating draft picks for 2014. They can do that by trading Gasol and Howard. They should especially be trying to land lottery picks. As long as they have a lottery pick, they have a chance to land Andrew Wiggins.

TurnipParticipantNot one of those things you mentioned is something that the other team would be interested in. Not one. I mean, Sacramento really wants to get rid of Salmons, but they’re not going to take on more money for the same number of years to do so like you’re proposing. And that’s the most realistic one.

CavFanPRParticipantYou really think the Timberwolves will give away Pekovic for a washed up Pau Gasol if they can resign him? This post is hilarious and you’re definetly a Laker fan.
Out of all the moves you mentioned, the Howard for Dirk trade is surprisingly realistic. I mean, Cuban wants Dwight and Nowitzki isn’t really that good anymore. The thing is, will Howard resign with the Lakers?
One last thing, Glen Rice Jr. is a first round pick and could possibly go into the lottery.

TurnipParticipantDirk says he’ll retire a Mav. Cuban says Dirk will retire a Mav. Dirk has a no trade clause. It is not surprisingly realistic. It’s a figment that only exists in the fevered dreams of a die-hard Lakers fanatic.

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf the T Wolves can’t afford Pek then Pau would give them a guy who could help Kevin Love and Rubio right away. Maybe not five years from now, but Kevin Love wants to win NOW. The Lakers also send a first round pick to Minny. I think Pau might just need a change of scenery.
The math for getting Chris Paul is a little tight, but if they can swap Pau for Pek they could save $5 million or so on salary. Then they swap Jodie Meeks for picks and could save about a million there. So maybe they could back load CP3’s contract. They could also save about $2 million on the Jordan Hill trade.
The money doesn’t look too good, but it IS possible.
Dwight Howard and a second rounder for Dirk and Bernard James isn’t a bad trade. The Lakers might have to throw in a future first rounder too. Not sure. Then the Mavs could rebuild around OJ Mayo (if they resign him), Darren Collison, Jae Crowder, and Dwight Howard. At least they would make things interesting.
This might be the most plausible scenario for the Lakers to reload.

arowsky205ParticipantIf they can’t afford Pek (which they can) how would they be able to afford Pau who probably make twice as much as Pek next year. And the math for getting Chris Paul is not just a little tight. He is getting a max contract, saving a few mil here and a few mil there won’t do anything. You’re insane.

Memphis MadnessParticipantAnother scenario is that the Lakers just amnesty Pau and then sign Pek. Pau wouldn’t count against the cap but they would still have to pay him his money.
If I am a Chris Paul then this is something I like. Or, a trade to the Celtics with Rondo going to LA. Other than that the Clippers need to be busy this offseason to get some more pieces around CP3 and Blake. They are building nicely but the West is really, really tough.
CavFanPR, I am not a Lakers fan. I am a Grizzlies fan who would like to turn two second round picks into Jodie Meeks who is a guy I like as a shooter.
… a team of Chris Paul, Kobe, Dirk, and Pek with Metta as the glue guy and Steve Nash off the bench would give the Lakers the best chance to win.

HotSnotParticipantAmnestying Gasol still leaves the Lakers over the cap. Even cutting Kobe loose instead (to keep his 30 mil off the books) will still leave the Lakers over the cap. There is no way for the Lakers to sign a max free agent this offseason. None.
The Lakers could “trade” for CP3 but I’m not sure the Lakers have what the Clips would be looking for. It would have to be Gasol for Paul. Gasol is expiring. The Lakers have no 1st round picks to trade at this time (two 1st’s in Nash trade, can’t trade first’s in back to back seasons)…unless were looking at 5 years down the road.
Speaking of Expirings, has anyone checked the Lakers books for the summer of 2014? The whole roster except for Nash (and Howard if resigned) comes off the cap.
Amnestying Kobe makes the most “financial” sense since his contract expires after next season anyways. His trade value is non-existent. The best deal might be with the Warriors. Warriors trade Biedrins, Jefferson and Rush (all expirings 24,046,000 total and enough to get approved under trade rules) to the Lakers for Kobe. Lakers get some warm bodies and save atleast 12 mil off their cap (6 in salary + 6mil in luxury tax payments). Warriors get half a season of Kobe and a careers worth of training advice and work ethic development for their young core. Kobe could always return to the Lakers the following year in free agency if he wanted when the Lakers have cap room again.

ball4life66ParticipantYes it would give them a better chance he win but there is a 0% the Lakers get Paul or Pek or Dirk so… and Glen Rice Jr. will be a first round pick when it’s all said and done so he won’t be there at 59. Very unrealistic offseason

MopgrassParticipantThey should sell every player they can for recent, current, or future 1st round draft picks. Fans wouldn’t let Kobe go, but ship everyone else.
Dwight Howard
Pau Gasol
Steve Nash
Meta World Peace? (tradeable?)
Jordan Hill? (can they get anything for him?)I doubt you could get anything for Meeks.
They could probably manage four 1st rounders for the 1st three guys. Well… maybe. They can be terrible for a year and tell Kobe to take it easy and take the year off.

SmooveKRYPTParticipantSeriously just STOP. You can’t acquire players through S&T if you’re in the luxury tax. The only way they can get CP3 or any other big $ free agent without using the amnesty on Kobe and only Kobe
