Call me crazy, but I’m beginning to think that this whole PF-C combo is getting a little overrated in Los Angeles with Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol. Yes, the size that LA once boasted on their front line was impressive and productive enough to make deep playoff runs, but the dynamic of the league is changing.

NBA squads are built in this generation with potent scorers and athletes at the 1-3 spots. The Lakers do have very skilled and crafty players in their fowards and centers, but when it comes down to it, neither of the players can help Kobe, Fish, World Peace or any other guards and forwards in Hollywood. Look at the top contending teams in the East and West. Check their rosters at the 1-3 spot and you find an all-star, athlete, above average guard or top caliber player franchiser:

    • Bulls: Derrick Rose, Luol Deng
    • Heat: Dwayne Wade, LeBron James
    • Knicks: Baron Davis, Carmelo Anthony
    • Celtics: Rajon Rondo, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce
    • Spurs: Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili
    • Mavs: Jason Kidd, Jason Terry (reserve), Shawn Marion
    • Thunder: Russell Westbrook, James Harden, Kevin Durant
    • Clippers: Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Caron Butler

If you ask me, I can definitely say that the Lakers don’t absolutely NEED Dwight Howard, and if so, only for one other big between Pau and Bynum. LA is lacking a second scoring punch that possesses a crossover and any ability to get to the rim. For many years now, even during the championship runs, LA has suffered and suffered without a wing man (Artest, Ariza each played somewhat of the role). Big men don’t run the NBA like history implies, guards are the way of the game. LA better wake up and realize it soon before they run their only guard force out of town.

Another issue that needs to be addressed is the decision making of Kobe Bryant, maybe they also need someone to hold Kobe accountable for the bad plays he makes. Is it fear that keeps teammates from questioning him? I don’t know. But as legendary as Kobe is, his choices on the court are poor, and this is also an issue that can be altered to help the Lakers get in better positions to win.
