With LBJ primarily playing the point for the heat, my question is this, would LeBron be the best pure PG in the league if that has his actual primary postion?

I think he would.  A pure point guard isn’t just a player who distributes the ball to the open man, it’s a player that makes his teammates better while doing so.  Players like Nash, Paul, Williams, Rondo make their team and teammates look better than they actually are, not because he finds them open, but because he finds them open in the right spots.  That’s the same thing LeBron James does.  It’s one thing to find your teammates open like Rose and Westbrook do, it’s a whole different thing to make your teammates better on the court.

I think outside of Kobe, LeBron is just the best player in the league, and I feel like he will catch up to Kobe eventually. So, in terms of that, yes. I feel he will always be defined as an SF though, and is basically similar to other point forwards before him, be it Paul Pressey, Scottie Pippen, even Lamar Odom to an extent. He may play more of a traditional PG role than those players, but whatever LeBron plays, to me he is the best at it. I feel he and Kobe are at a different level than anyone playing the game right now, but LeBron still has to take the title from Kobe to claim the top spot. But, if you look at the top PG’s in the league and how far they have taken their teams as either the primary scorer or primary set-up person with a lot of talent (Rondo/Nash), than I would go with LeBron. LeBron has a different game than Magic, as he was much more of a scorer than Magic ever was, where as Magic was a pass first player, but I would say it would be a similar set-up as to when Magic played PG. Whatever Magic played, he was the best other than maybe Bird or Mike. LeBron only has Kobe ahead of him at this current time, just the way the league is set-up.

I think lebron has natural pg feel for the game, and if you combine that with his physical tools and abilities to draw the double team man he could be the best pg in the NBA.  I always think about when I saw he played Mcdonalds all american game, he was killing it with just his passes.  But I don’t know if he could make his players play at a higher level like a nash or paul, but he could get them easy buckets for sure.

You have to remember, Magic didn’t have anywhere near the physical and athletic gifts that LeBron has.  I’m sure if Magic was as fast and as strong as LeBron, he would have been much more of a scorer.  Heck, if anybody has the body and athletic ability of LeBron, they would be much better.

Chris Paul still the best point guard but Lebron as a point would be in the discussion just because of his size and his great passing ability as well.

He’d have to get his TO numbers down for me to call him the best pure PG, you look at a guy like Chris Paul who averages 10 assists and commits only 2.2 TO’s compared to Lebron who averages 9 assists and 4 TO’s and Lebrons overall prowess isn’t enough for me to call him the best pure point guard.   But I’d call him the best player playing point guard if that makes any sense, haha.

The best we’ll see, how well can he defend the PG’s.  Obviously he has all the tools to be the best.

Still I’d like to see Miami get a real PG in there esp. 1 that pushes the ball and with the finishers they have that would be a potentially great team if they landed another quality big man.

I don’t think the Heat need a "real point guard," just one that can defend and shoot. Lebron can fill the role of the traditional ball handler. As someone one pointed out a while ago, Jarrett Jack would be perfect.

Not even… is he better than chris paul, deron williams, derrick rose no way. he can fit the position of ‘ballhandler’ on that team but their team is in a different situation than most. but in terms of best pure pg no, its not even close

If he would embrace playing that position full-time he very well could be. He could then stand to lose 20-30 pounds to get lighter on his feet and still physically overpower other pgs. This would also help him defensively to pressure the ball. We already know he can pass. He would be a terror as a full-time point.

Very, very aware of that. But Magic also was always considered the Lakers PG and lead guard, where as LeBron was always considered an SF who could play point in a pinch. But you look at the way Magic orchestrated a game and passed the ball, LeBron does it sometimes, but Magic did it so consistently that you never even had to ask who the PG was. LeBron is great at making the right basketball play, but like tezo tends to harp on, can over dribble and slow down the offense much more so than Magic ever did when running Show Time. LeBron has the athletic and physical tools to be the best to have ever played the game, but at this point, I do not think you will get to many people here arguing he was a better PG than Magic just for the mental aspects. I am guessing you have never read my posts before, but I have gotten into this countless times and yes, I know LeBron has athletic ability Magic never possessed.

I wonder how it will look once Mike Miller comes back. He could be exactly what they need, and with Mike they really would have 3 guys who could bring the ball up. Mike was never really "officially a PG" and you would not want him guarding them, but he can pass and handle the rock. Plus it is a lot harder to shoot over him than Mo Williams or Carlos Arroyo. Mike might even come off of the bench, and I always thought Mario Chalmers would be a great fit, just from his days with Kansas and the fact that he had a decent first couple years. He is nowhere as quick or long as Rondo, but he was always known for his defense and he could shoot. Wonder what has happened or if he is working back slowly, but either way I do not like the idea of starting each half with Arroyo and Anthony, hope they get a more consistent rotation and starters who better fit an opening of the game. Ilgauskas already has been much better, now if they could just get someone in as a PG or a wing, anyone who can maybe fit better with Wade/Bron than Arroyo.

Yes, I saw how fluid Magic was with the offense that he had, but you have to remember, it’s much easier to pass when you have Kareem, James, and Byron Scott on your team.  Players with high basketball IQ that know to get to their spots.  With LeBron’s scoring ability and the way everybody would just stand around in Cleveland, he pretty much HAD to over dribble, he had to take every shot, he had to run the offense completely.  Magic Johnson had a chemistry with his team, that I think is only matched to Rondo, Nash, Stockton, and players of that level.  That said, if LeBron was put on that Lakers team decades ago, instead of Magic, he would easily run the offense as fluid as Magic in my opinion.
