Well deserved has had a great year
This was really a toss up for me. Ibaka, Sanders, Gasol, and Bradley could have all won this award and each of them would have deserved it. Glad to see Gasol get some recognition though.
Just curious, but why do so many people think Ibaka is a great defender? He's not much of a rebounder and he's not very good as a defender on his own man.
Even stretching that out, I don't see how OKC isn't a top 1 or 2 defense in the league. They basically have a better version of what Chicago has as far as personel, but are able to put more pressure on an offense because of how good Durant and Westbrook are on that side.
I still think James and Noah are the two best defensive players.
You mean LeBron "Block the Transition Layup" James?
I think Noah missed too many games down the stretch which hurt his chances, but not sure why Lebron hasn't gotten into this discussion, especially the past few years. Looking back, going to Miami was the best decision he could have made for the short term. It's pushed him in ways he wasn't getting pushed in Cleveland and Spo and Riley have forced him to be better. With that said, he has accepted that challenge, which a lot of star guys now won't do.
Agreed, James and Noah are the two best defenders in the league, but they gave it to Gasol because he's the backbone of that lock down Memphis defense. Still well deserved and nice to see him win it.
How many people thought Marc Gasol would win the DPOY when he was drafted back in 2007?
It is well deserved, I really feel that he or Hibbert deserved it for anchoring the best 2 defensive teams in NBA. Had a guy like Noah or James won it I wouldn't have been upset either.
Would have loved Paul George to get it, but he slipped a little bit towards end of year.
I'd rather see Tony Allen win it then Marc Gasol
If Tim Duncan doesn't get 1st team Center I'm gonna flip.
Paul George led the league in defensive win shares.
I'm sorry but he's not even the best defender on his own team
My thoughts exactly good sir.
Not buying Marc Gasol as the best or most valuable defender in the NBA.
Roy Hibbert or Paul George should have won it. Best defense in the league.
The thing is, take away Gasol and the Grizzlies still have good defense. Take away some of the other guys, and the overall team defense suffers.
I'm so confused on this one... I just need an explanation of why him and not any of those other guys who play dominant defense and and have high defensive rebounding numbers and blocks and just are really really good defenders.
I know Gasol is a pretty good defender and plays on one of the best defensive teams in the league... but DPOY?
Tony Allen or LeBron James
LOL..You guys response to Marc Gasol winning this award....Is similar to the reaction Tyson Chandler got last when he won it,even though he wasn't on the ALL NBA 1st Defensive Team...Those guys do things that doesn't show up in stats..Like setting screens, driving on the floor for loose balls, taking charges...Marc winning this award might come as a shock to alot of people..But folks who watch him on a nightly basis aren't surprise..
And this year it was wide open..I doubt if you would've gotten any complaints if Lebron,Noah,Tony Allen,Avery Bradley or Howard won it...
I'm really upset Duncan didn't get it. His stats are better than Gasols, the Spurs have a better record and Tony Allen might be a better defensive player than Marc.
I think you can make an argument that Gasol deserves it but honestly I think Duncan or even LeBron are clear better choices to me.
Noah might have won it if he hadn't all the injuries and is a way better defender than Gasol.
I like Marc, but DPOY??? Far cry from the days of the Deke's and the Big Ben's being the top defensive players in the L... Timmy shoulda got this one, Bron 2nd, George 3rd, and than Marc... and I'm not even sold on Marc being #4 on this list either... S/N: Jimmy Butler probably won't win it, but will be in contention next year mark my words...
Whoever gave me negs on this, you don't know basketball... Timmy or Bron should've won it, not Marc..
PLAYER A - 7.8 rpg, 1.7 bpg, 1.0 spg, 35.0 mpg
PLAYER B - 9.9 rpg, 2.7 bpg, 0.7 spg, 30.1 mpg
The more traditional, telling stats....
PLAYER B is Timmy who is 36 yrs old btw...
PLAYER A is your DPOY!!!
Doesn't add up...
They may be traditional, but they aren't telling.

Defensive Win Shares:
Net Defensive rating (on/off court)
defensive RAPM ( adjusted plus minus. This is referred to by many as the current, definitive defensive stat)
I think this could be a sign that people who vote are paying closer attention to metrics. In just about every single metric you can use to analyze a player's individual and impact on team defense, Marc was very highly rated.
2nd in the league in Defensive Win Shares on a team who was 2nd in the league in defensive rating. Top 5 in individual defensive rating. His Points-Per-Possession against ranks him among the best, if not THE best C in the league. His overall PPP against, iso, PnR and his post up PPP ratings are all top notch. His On/Off rating is extremely high, improving his team's defense by 7 points when he's on the floor.
Statistically, the only other candidate who could compare was Paul George. I'd have no problem with either winning it.
Judging by some of the posts in this thread, I know who the most overrated defender in the league is though...
Where do you find all of those metrics at?
