PhogifyParticipantDidn’t know Marcus Smart could dunk like that at all. Watching him last season, when he dunked it looked like he could barely get the ball over the rim. He’s obviously been making use of the offseason.

sheltwon3ParticipantIf he stays healthy, his draft stock may be higher than many think. He will have size strength and athleticism at the point guard position. I believe despite what people are saying, he made the right move by staying another year. He will be polished and will probably be starting in any situation he comes out in and also since he may drop some draft spots, the team he get picked up by is gonna be decent and not some bottom dweller.

theprophetParticipanti don’t know about your first sentence there. are you suggesting he goes one? his draft stock right now seems to be anywhere from two to seven on various draft boards i have seen since the last nba draft. that’s pretty darn high if you ask me. with his athleticism improved like this combined with his iq, i believe it would be hard for him to drop off. i guess first overall isn’t out of the question, but a long shot for sure. i do agree that it wasn’t a bad move to stay in college though. it was just a choice. i like smart’s choice in staying. even andre drummond could have stayed the year before. he had a great rookie season and was a top ten pick, but had he stayed, he could have easily went first in last year’s draft and who knows, maybe even improved his ft percentage and more fundamentals in college??? it would have been nice to see a dedicated college andre drummond as much as he did last year in the nba level. staying isn’t for everyone though, i’m glad smart made a smart decision. he also will be further on with his education, which is always a plus.

bigtymer32Participanti knew marcus smart could dunk but he has ups .maybe he dropped some body fat and randle isn’t as big as i thought.he has a good frame not bulky.
marcus smart is top 3 pick.can’t wait to see him play.looking like playing at the usa basketball camp helped his confidence

agentoaktreeParticipantSmart is a straight up competitor you could see it in his eyes after randles dunks. already an ace defender and now he ices the cake with that type of athleticism? He gonna do big things

mawi7056ParticipantSmart is not a rose/westbrook/wall type athlete, but he is no slouch. If continues to learn the position and work on his lateral quickness he’ll do fine in the league

JoeWolf1Smart is athletically ( not saying game ) like James Harden, IMO. He’s strong, quick and can really get off the ground, but it’s often percieved as in game atheltic ability because he’s not really light on his feet like some of the taller one legged jumpers so it may not look as graceful, but he’s still getting just as high. Harden had a higher vert than DeRozen in the combine, but you’d never guess it. I think Smart is the same way.

surveParticipantSmart is not an elite athlete by today’s standards but 20-30 years ago he likely wouldve been. Because of this…he is underrated athletically. Harden was really underrated athletically….I realized that when I saw him in Summer League a couple of years ago. He’s a beast. Both Harden and Smart I think have been working on their explosiveness and getting their body fat down and that brings out the best in them athletically.

JoeWolf1Absolutetly, if you’re 220 lbs with that low of a body fat %, you’re going to be able to propel your body pretty high off the ground. He’s probably got more leg strength than the majority of guys in college basketball. He looks like a linebacker.

princejamesParticipantSmart’s athleticism when playing in games is not as impressive as the athleticism he shows in lay-up lines before the game starts. And I think it’s because he is one of those guys who needs to utilize the perfect angle , the perfect footwork, the perfect spacing, and the perfect timing that will allow him to get the needed momentum that will help him jump very high. Some guys can just jump very high from any and every angle ( example: derrick rose and russell westbrook ). While other guys need the perfect angle to be available in order for them to jump very high. That is also the same reason why some guys who are great athletes in space can also end up being very average athletes in traffic.
For example, Andre Miller who some think is an average athlete is actually a guy that when he get’s the opportunity to utilize perfect angles and the needed spacing, is a guy who will surprise people with his ability to jump high and possibly even rise up and dunk on someone – For Example:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etSJam5VgH8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fihKmz35rtIBut the reality is that marcus smart is a good but not great athlete with an level of athleticism that I think will surprise many people when he get’s in the nba

surveParticipantI thought Miller was a great athlete when he was in college….but when he got to the NBA everyone else was just better. So I always scratch my head when people say Miller is not very athletic or just average. The level that you are comparing it to makes it seem less than what it really is. Those dunks that Smart is doing is soooooo common today with HS athletes even. 30 years ago….it wasnt common to see 6’3″ guards doing Dominique style dunks and 360 cuffs.

princejamesParticipantI agree, but at the same time their are a lot players who are like marcus smart and andre miller. In which they need to utilize the perfect angle, the perfect footwork, the perfect spacing, and the perfect timing that will allow them to get the needed momentum that will help them jump very high.
For example oj mayo is the same way. During the nba draft combine he tested out to have a 41 inch max one step vertical jump. And he has shown many times that he is a very good athlete in space, but a average athlete in traffic because he needs the perfect angle to be available in order for him to jump very high – For example:

Memphis MadnessParticipantRandle can get up for a big man. Both guys look like top 5 picks but Randle is in that discussion for 1, 2, or 3.
Athletic bigs go at a premium in this league. Can’t wait to see what Julius Randle does next year.

cabbycabParticipantWow, not that being a great dunker translate into being a good player, but I’m impressed with both. Smart is built like a football player and just appears to be naturally strong and athletic. I always thought Randle was a bit chubby but I was obviously wrong. His body looks solid and that behind the back dunk looked very fluid.

joecheck88ParticipantThey’re both good athletes. Not elite ones. I’d give them 8 of 10 for Smart and 9 of 10 for Randle. Smart wont really need to dunk too much in the league at his position. He’s going to over power almost every point guard and most SGs. Randle has good athleticism for a big man but not that insane Amare, J Smoove or BG athleticism. I think they’re both going to be very good players and would compete for the number 1 pick most years.
I noticed some flab but it is the summer and once college workouts start, I think he will get where he needs to be. He doesn’t look like Eddy Curry or anything. Haha
