TarHeelRavenParticipantThe talk of the ACC basketball season offseason will surround the expansion with Notre Dame, Pitt and Syracuse and usual heavyweights UNC and Duke. I think one team nobody will be talking about but could have a really good season could be Maryland. Mark Turgeon has done a really good job with the program after Gary Williams retired. Last year their guard play was pretty bad, but this year Seth Allen should be much improved at the point with a year under his belt. Dez Wells is a stud and their wings are solid with Jake Layman and Nick Faust. I think the key to Maryland’s success will be the progress of bigs Shaquille Cleare and Charles Mitchell who will get plenty of chance to shine after Alex Len’s jump to the NBA. I think Maryland will be a top three team in the ACC and could challenge for the regular season title.

Wahoo757ParticipantThey should be a solid team that makes it to the tournament but I don’t see them being a threat to the ACC Championship. Duke, UNC, Syracuse, Virginia, and maybe even Notre Dame and NC State have better squads this upcoming season.

Velvet HoopParticipantI don’t think Cleare/Mitchell’s development is nearly as important as Allen/Faust. Last year Maryland’s offense was frustratingly bad. They refused to get the ball into the post to Len on a consitent basis to Len, who was a lottery pick. Why would they utilize Cleare and Mitchell more? No, those guys are mainly there for rebounds and putbacks. Maryland needs to rein in Stoglin-light in Faust. He has never seen a shot he didn’t like. Also, while it was impressive seeing Allen’s ability to get into the lane, he was flat out awful at finishing his attempts once he did get into the lane. That has to improve for him this year. I like Dez Wells and Jake Layman the most on this team.
I think they have a shot at top 6 in the ACC. Duke, Syracuse, UNC, Notre Dame and Virginia should be the top 5, but NCSU lost their entire starting 5, so I would expect the Terps to be better than them this season. BC, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Wake, Virginia Tech and Miami should all be terrible this year. Miami will be similar to State in losing thier entire squad. The wild card to me is Pitt. I don’t really follow them closely, but they normally tend to do pretty well in the big east during the regular season, before getting upset early in the tournament. Hard to say where they will fit in in the new ACC.

storm33ParticipantMichigan transfer Evan Smotrycz will be a beast for Maryland. Total mismatch for defenses; he can drain the 3 and rebound pretty well.

cwhitman412ParticipantThis year will be a fun year, but the big year will be 2014. I don’t see Dez or Layman leaving us after this year, and we shouldn’t have any departures after this year. It’ll be a talented, experienced team that’ll be adding one of the better recruiting classes in the nation as well. We should be one of the deepest teams in the nation, and quite possibly one of the most talented. We’ll see how the development goes with players like Shaq, Seth, Peters, etc this year. If either Seth or Peters becomes a reliable point guard we should be fantastic.

PabloFiascoParticipantHate to see them leave the ACC. Those Duke vs Maryland games were intense. They’re a threat mostly because of their size. No one else has big men and depth to match their inside.Seth Allen will be much improved and Dez will be….DEZ!
