One question to people on this site regarding the Mavericks backcourt. With Calderon as their PG and Ellis as their SG, their is a lot of talent, especially on the offensive side with Calderon as a low-mistake PG who’s also a good shooter, and Ellis as an offensive dynamo who can put points up the board really fast. However, defense is something else here.

The problems on the defensive side of the ball start with Calderon being slow-footed an unathletic, and Ellis being too small and unwilling to put a lot of effort on defense. However, might it be an option for the Mavs to let them switch on defense so Ellis can use his speed to guard PG’s and Calderon use his larger body to guard opposing SG’s. Remind that Kidd (not saying Calderon is half as good as a defender as Kidd) came away guarding SG’s and even SF’s, while almost being identical in measurements (Kidd: 6’4 210lb, Calderon: 6’3 211lb). For Ellis, if he is willing to put effort in defending PG’s (and I think Carlisle will make him to), he could be really successful at creating turnovers for easy points (which in the end is what he wants).

At the end of the day, I think this will allow both players to maximize their potential and give the Mavs a really good backcourt.

that seems like the best way to use them on defense for sure. It’s gonna be all about effort with monta and carlisle is as good as it gets as a coach so we shall see how it goes. Most SGs in the NBA are around 6’5 anyways so jose can match up pretty well. the’re gonna have to rotate in other players for sure when they need to buckle down but overall switching on d is going to be a must. I’m just not sure how much of a defensive presence marion is anymore and if he is too much of a liability on offense with his ridiculous jumpshot. Lots of questions for the mavs. I feel like they have the potential to surprise a lot of teams with their lineup but also can just completely suck if they dont come together as a team

they’re gonna have serious defensive problems IMO….shawn marion is their only big wing defender and he’s 35 years old. there is literally not a single guy on that roster that I would feel comfortable putting on a 6’5 or taller swingman. Jae Crowder can D-up a little bit but he’s got his limitations for sure, which is why he was a second round pick.

The mavs should be in tank mode, instead they have a roster that can get em somewhere between 35-45 wins……not a good situation

In Toronto last season Casey went with a two PG lineup very often since Lowry was supposed to be the #1, but Calderon ended up being the teams best player at the time. They also put out the combo of Calderon and John Lucas. On D, they matched OK – not fantastic – but OK.

Also, not sure if the Mavs still use the Defenses set up by Casey a few years ago, but Calderon definately worked out on the defensive side better under Casey than he has under anyone else.
