Only a few weeks after the surprise retirement of Hall of Fame manager Tony La Russa, the St. Louis Cardinals have found a replacement -- former Cardinal catcher Mike Matheny.
As a Cardinal fan, I like the move and also dislike the move of bringing Matheny in to replace Tony La Russa.
The problem I have with the move is the fact that Matheny has no previous managerial experience at any level of baseball. However, I like this because they brought in a guy who used to play on this team who had formed bonds with players such as Albert Pujols, Yadier Molina, and Chris Carpenter. He was a fan favorite in St. Louis with his high-energy level and stellar defense behind the plate.
Matheny is only 41, so if this works out, St. Louis could be looking at a long time manager for the future. But, what if this doesn't work out? What if Albert leaves, and the team struggles? What if Matheny makes the wrong pitching changes at the wrong time? Will the fans be forgiving of him, or will they eat the Cardinal's front office alive?
Only time will tell, but hopefully all will be well, and the St. Louis Cardinals can continue their winning ways, and continue on the tradition of Tony La Russa, forever.
