2K Sports today announced that the Oklahoma City Thunder’s Kevin Durant, Los Angeles Clippers’ Blake Griffin and the Chicago Bulls’ Derrick Rose have been crowned the cover athletes for NBA® 2K13, the next installment of the top-selling and top-rated NBA video game simulation franchise*.

”Being crowned as one of the NBA 2K13 cover athletes is a huge honor and something I always dreamt about,” said Durant, who won his third straight scoring title and led the Thunder franchise to their first NBA Finals appearance since 1996. “It’s definitely humbling to grace the cover after the likes of Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, and Larry Bird.”

“There’s so much young talent around the NBA, so it’s very exciting to be chosen for NBA 2K’s ‘New Dynasty’ alongside Kevin and Derrick,” added Griffin, who helped lead the Clippers to their first postseason since 2006. “The NBA 2K series has always been my first choice when I want to get a game in.”

“It’s a dream come true to be one of the cover athletes for NBA 2K13,” commented Rose, the 2010-11 NBA Most Valuable Player, who led the Bulls to a league-best 50-16 record this season. “I’ve worked closely with 2K Sports since NBA 2K10, and I’m honored to follow in the footsteps of Michael Jordan as the latest Chicago Bull to be featured on the cover.”

In their young but impressive careers, Rose, Durant and Griffin have each taken the NBA by storm. All three are past winners of the NBA Rookie of the Year award, and have also amassed eight All-Star berths, three scoring titles, and one Most Valuable Player award between them.

“There are many young superstars in today’s NBA, but we’ve selected three incredible athletes for the cover of NBA 2K13 that represent the NBA well,” concluded Jason Argent, vice president of marketing for 2K Sports. “It’s clear to us that Blake, Derrick and Kevin are the most deserving guys to inherit the NBA 2K cover from Jordan, Magic and Bird.”

Developed by Visual Concepts, a 2K Sports studio, NBA 2K13 is not yet rated by the ESRB and will be available on October 2, 2012 in North America and October 5, 2012 internationally. The Wii U version of the title will be available during the holiday season. Fans are encouraged to pre-order now at participating retailers in order to receive the downloadable NBA All-Star content package presented by Sprite on day one at no extra cost.

Doesn’t look bad, but I prefer one player per cover. Even if they did the thing like last year where they released multiple covers and you had your pick. Seeing three players on one cover is just kind of weird.

I see where the idea is, going with the youth movement of the league. But if you’re going to put multiple players on a cover, it should be players who won the previous championship; for example LBJ, Wade, & Bosh. That would make more sense(although it might hurt sales =P).

Its a strange choice given their current positions.

    Rose- Injured

Durant- Previously on the failed NBA Elite 11, recently beaten in finals

Griffin- Was the NBA’s golden child last year but had his popularity spiral downwards a bit, getting a bit more hate.

He was the most over rated player in the entire league last year…I actually had to edit his player because they gave him way too much speed and ball handling ability(you literally can’t stripe the guy…WTF he’s a Turn Over machine)

Derrick Rose could have been on the cover last year, now you won’t even be able to play with him online because of the living Rosters feature, oh well I rarely even play online, and I never pick the Bulls LOL…

In fact the Bulls could be without RIP Hamilton(Age/Injurys), Luol Deng(surgery post Olympics), Joakim Noah(injury issues) and RFA’s Cj Watson, Taj Gibson and Omer Asik…

I get putting Blake on the cover because of the hype/highlight reels he produce a few seasons ago

Durant was the NBA Elite cover guy and he’s also a worthy of promoting the 2k series but It is a little too soon to put him on This Year’s Edition…I’m shocked Lebron wasn’t involved in this, he just cemented his legacy with a Championship ring…

Lebron would have been my choice for solo Athlete Cover…Iverson, Kobe, Chris Paul, Shaq, Micheal Jordan/Magic and Bird were all 2k Cover Guys, I just can’t Imagine the series not including Lebron James at some point…He just completed the Trifecta(Regular Season MVP, Finals MVP and NBA Championship)

No offense but all these 3 cover guys have done is win Rookie of the Year awards, Durant is the best player and most accomplished out of the 3 but he’s only a Scoring Champ and NBA Finals Loser(for lack of a better term)

Rose won the MVP last year but that could be as good as he’ll ever be, ACL/MCL injuries are tough to come back from and could rob him of some explosiveness….

A Clippers play on the cover of 2K? This has to be a first, right?!

I like the new cover. All the young talent in the nba right now, these three guys especially though are names we’re gonna be hearing quite often for years to come.

I like the cover as well. I think its pretty cool but why hasn’t Lebron been on the cover yet? Matter of fact why hasn’t he been on the cover of any basketball video game? The dude is arguably the best player in the league. Just won his first ring. I mean damn lol. You got retired players being on covers before him. Do people hate him that much lol? I’m not even that big of a fan of him but come on

But now that I think about it. Marketing wise, maybe he might not be the best choice like what Cynthia said. The Heat still have alot of haters and it might not be good for sales.

LeBron should’ve been on the cover. He deserved it.

But I like this one too though. Would be a lot better if D. Rose hadn’t have gotten injured.

Yea, I was upset they didn’t have the 2000 Indiana Pacers on 2K12 or at least something between the 90’s Pacers vs Knicks rivalry…

I wanted to see Lebron on the cover clutching the trophy, but this works, I just hope that they add more retro teams, so we can play with young AI, and young Lebron and D-Wade.

Yea, they should have a greatest nba moments game mode. Similar to the Jordan Challenges on 2k11 but with other famous nba moments. Like try and duplicate the Reggie Miller comeback against the knicks. or Wilts 100 points. Stuff like that

^There is a reason they didn’t have Reggie or Chuck, I believe they’re not members of the retired players association or something like that which means that they’d probably have to pay them cover boy money to get them in the game, but I would love to see it happen, and a 2003 J-Kidd going up against Nash would be cool as well.

Call obvious play on the Big 3. Would not be surprised if they came up with some mode that has something to do with the Big 3.

My question is, when the hell is the best player in the league going to get on the cover of a game?

Everyone from Carmelo Anthony, Gilbert Arenas, Blake Griffin, Ben Wallace, Chris Paul and Dwight Howard have been on it when they haven’t accomplished anything near to what James has combined.

Gilbert Arenas was on the cover of 2K? Which one?

I know Allen Iverson was on the first several, then Ben Wallace, Shaq, Chris Paul, Kobe, MJ, MJ/Magic/Bird and now Griffin/KD/D. Rose.
