Now is the time of the year when we guarantee a certain prospect will be a stud in the NBA, I’d like to see who are some players you thought would be great but never panned out. I’ll list my guys, but looking over my list helps give me more perspective on this draft and not to write off a guy before they ever get into the league or not to proclaim someone an allstar before they play a game.

    My List:

Steve Logan: I’m not ashamed to admit it, I compared him to Tim Hardaway coming out, lol. Still though I don’t know anyone who didn’t like Logan. He was an absolute monster at Cinci. Big time scorer with what I thought were good enough PG skills. Never thought he’d bust like this. He had an uncanny resemblance to DMX lol.

Rod Grizzard: ok yeah I liked him partly because of his name haha, but yeah I was a huge fan of him at Arkansas. I would have expected him to have a Gerald Wallace type career. He was athletic, a good defender and scorer. His game was just too raw for the NBA.

Kenny Satterfield: Yeah I kind of had a feeling he wouldn’t make it into the league as he’s one of those guys who can be dynamite in college but didn’t have an NBA game. His game was too much about flash, still though I had hopes he’d be a Jamal Crawford type.

Julius Page: Loved both him and Brandin Knight on those Pitt teams. Page just had that beautiful lefty game, silky smooth with good athleticism, a very good defender. He was simply undersized for the NBA and needed to develop more with his right hand. He and Salim Stoudemire are two lefty’s I am sad didn’t make it in the league.

Freddy Jones: Sure he was undersized but at Oregon he was a terrific shooter, built like a running back and was super athletic. I thought the dunk contest was going to propel his career and he did have some solid seasons with the Pacers but he never developed into what I thought he’d be. I guess that whole Oregon team has been a bust in the NBA especially with Luke Jackson. Ridnour has had a solid career but still not stars from that team that I thought would produce NBA stars.

Reece Gaines: He had nice size, was strong, could shoot and pass. I remember hearing a Jim Jackson comparison back in the day and that seemed like a good one. I remember when he was traded to Houston in the T-Mac deal I thought he’d be a stud for Houston, he then just kind of disappeared, have no idea where he is today.

Sergei Monya: I remember when the Blazers drafted both he and Khryapa I thought they were going to be good NBA contributors. Monya had prototype SF size, could shoot and seemed a lot tougher and stronger than most Euro wings. Unfortunately for the Blazers neither Euro’s worked out, keep in mind this was during the time when every pro team was looking for the next Dirk or Manu and ended up reaching on guys they knew little about. I remember teams drafting Euro’s simply off workouts, and most of these guys because of their skill level look great in workouts. I’m glad NBA teams do more diligence in scouting Euro’s nowadays and don’t just trust grainy 50’s looking footage.

David Harrison: I remember when the Pacers drafted him at the end of the first I thought it was an absolute steal. It’s hard to find big bodied bigs like that nowadays. He was surprisingly athletic and a good shot blocker. I thought at worst he’d be a Jason Collins type. Things never worked out for him though and while he stuck around in the league for a while he never really did anything. I guess his work ethic and skill level were not at an NBA level. I see a similar fate for Daniel Orton. Next pick was Anderson Varejao, I’m sure the Pacers wish they could go back in time.

Ike Diogu: Ok I bought the Elton Brand comparisons. He was a beast at Arizona state, high skill level and strength, freakish wing span. I know he’s still in the league and has had flashes throughout his career but I expected him to be much more than a bottom feeder role player. Not what you’d expect in the #9 pick in the draft.

Cedric Simmons: Basically what JJ Hickson is today, that’s what I thought Simmons would be. Simmons failure in the NBA actually probably affected Hickson’s draft stock coming from the same school. Simmons had a great Sophomore campaign. He had good size and an incredible combination of athleticism and length. Unfortunately his skill set never developed, Hornets really screwed the pooch on that one drafting two underdeveloped offense players in the lottery in him and Armstrong. Many pegged them a future twin towers. A bit optimistic but I don’t think anyone predicted both he and Armstrong to have such little impact in the NBA.

Mardy Collins: I’m a honest man and I won’t lie, I was so high on Collins it was borderline crazy. I actually had him ranked above Brandon Roy. I just loved his game at Temple. He was 6-6” could play point guard and was a great defender. I really thought he would be a huge time NBA player with his size and skill set. Unfortunately Collins most memorable NBA moment was the fight with Carmelo Anthony. I guess he is the case of one of those guys who is good at everything and great at nothing. In the NBA having one specialty usually outweighs being just average across the board at everything.

Danilo “JR” Pinnock: I was a huge fan of that GW team with him, Pops Mensah Bonsu and Mike Hall. I thought Pinnock’s game translated completely to the NBA. He was a run and jump athlete who could stroke the three. I remember comparing him to a poor man’s Jason Richardson. Unfortunately his skill set didn’t translate to the NBA as I thought it would because his jump shot was not consistent enough and he didn’t give enough effort on the defensive end.

Derrick Byars: I had Byars mocked as a mid first rounder the entire draft process and he ended up going in the 2nd. I loved his game at Vandy, he had nice size, could score, defend, and had good overall skills. Unfortunately he hasn’t stuck.

Morris Almond: I don’t know what the deal was with him. He was my biggest draft steal. He had a sweet stroke and was overall a dynamite scorer. He had an NBA build. He’s sort of a D-league legend but why he couldn’t make it in the league I’m not sure. I guess defensive effort is a big part of that.

Stephane Lasme: Thought he would carve out a role in the NBA. Kind of like what Udonis Haslem is. Lasme was athletic and long, a hard worker and a good kid. Wish he would have found a role in the NBA. He was vastly undersized however.

Rodney Carney: I loved this guy at Memphis, but he never really amounted to much more than an off and on bench player in the League.

Shawne Williams: Still one of my favorite players, and is actually showing signs of life this season. I’m rooting for this guy.

Adam Morrison: It just wasn’t meant to be. Haha.

Jon Bender: Injuries plagued his entire career and it makes me ask "what if?"

I’m sure I’ll post a few more, but the Bulls-Hawks game just started so I’m going to pay attention. Good topic, by the way.

Michael Beasley– I thought he was going to be a beast straight out of college being an instant double double like he was in college. It is still early in his career and his offensive numbers are impressive(even though on bad team), but I dont think he will become that dominant player i imagined

Deron Washington– He was one those energy players that I thought would find a niche in the nba, hasnt worked out though

Randy Foye– I thought he was going to be a allstar type of player, never like the dwayne wade comparison but I thought he would be really good, unforunately injuries have been a problem and he is inconsistant

Quincy Douby– as a rutgers fan I was hoping he would stick around, was a scorer in college, but never exactly translated

Sean williams– I thought we landed a steal when we drafted him, thinking he finally got his act togather and he would shock everyone. Athletic that would block every shot, now hes in the dleague with no one willing to give him a shot because of past history

Gerald Green- Size, freak athlete, developing jump shot, still don’t know why he can’t make it

PJ Tucker- Thought he would at least be the next Bonzi Wells

    Rodney Carney- Same as green

    UConn 2006 drafties (minus Gay):

Hilton Armstrong- Size and toughness but never panned out on offensive end

    Josh Boone- Same as Hilton

Marcus Williams- Was supposed to be next JKidd, still don’t know why he couldn’t find a home

Joe Alexander- Seemed to have all the tools and heart to play in the league

Jerryd Bayless- Great skill set along with a competitive edge to him but never developed into a true PG

Salim Stoudemire- Just really wanted him to make it

    Michael Sweetney- JUST KIDDING!

    Acie Law- Same as Bayless

    Javaris Crittenton- Ask Gilbert Arenas

^ I wouldn’t write off Jerryd Bayless. Lots of guys take a while to get it and he showed lots of potential the 2nd half of the year and is still very young. Have to consider he only had one year in college. He still has a chance to be good.

    For me id say

Donte Greene- I was expecting him to be a good scorer right off the bat, then he had a monster summer league, then the regular season reminded me why it’s just summer league.

Joey Graham- All the physical tools, and all the opportunity, but no assertiveness and a limited basketball IQ.

Sean Singletary- He was a wizard in college and I was sure he was going to be a starter in the league. Dont really know what happened there.

my list is probably longer than all of yours…but im gonna keep it short

Adam Morrison -The year of his draft, if you asked what he’d be doing in 2011, i’d probably guess leading a playoff team in scoring, and living up to those oh-so-high Larry Bird comparisons..

Shelden Williams – Thought he’d be the next great big man….powerful, aggresive, talented, where did he go wrong?

Brandan Wright – Didnt think he’d be amazing, but thaught he’d be a lot higher than where he is now..

Marcus Williams[uconn] – Thought he was the next great point guard…thought he’d be what Deron Williams is now to the Nets, if been mad at alot of Knicks draft picks, but passing on MW had me ready to quit on the team, even tho Balkman hasnt turned out to be all that great either…

    TJ Ford- Yeahhhh….

Shelden Williams busted because in college he relied purely on brute strength, in the NBA he couldn’t push guys around anymore so no longer could his strength compensate for the fact that he was underskilled, unathletic for an NBA player, slow running up the court and a bit short for a center. Many compared him to Antonio Davis possibly but Davis had that mid range shot going for him. Shelden had relied so much on strength that even his fundamental rebounding and shot blocking which were strengths in college were below average in the NBA. I called it before the draft that Williams would be a big bust for my Hawks, turns out I was right.

^ Kirk Snyder is a good one, but again how can you write off a guy like Damion James? He’s a rookie who got under 20 minutes a game, was injured for much of the year. The guy had flashes and does appear to be a versatile defender and rebounder.

I was high on Joakim Noah in 06, but lost faith in him in 07, thougth he’d be a bust, but i was wrong. I also thought Beasley would be doing all the thing we are seeing Blake Griffin do, and thought Rose would be out of the league by 2013. Boy was I wrong! I called Rudy Gay being good, and called Marcus Williams dissapointing, and knew Patrick O bryant would fizzle from the start. I also thought Brandon Rush would be pretty good, but that has not happened yet, and I also thought Hasheem Thabeet would be good and rely on his shot blocking and rebounding, putting up 2 points, 11rebs, and 6 blocks or something like that, but the jury is still out

Shelden Williams – He was the "safe" pick. Seemed to have an NBA ready game on the defensive end. Dead wrong.

Rudy Gay – I thought he would be a great defender. Why isn’t he?

Corey Brewer – Great athlete, well-rounded. Figured he would be a fantastic role-player and he hasn’t lived up to those expectations.

Gabe Pruitt – I don’t even know what I was thinking, but I had pegged him as a first-rounder.

    Sean Williams – Lesson learned.

Paul George – Thought he was a reach in the top ten, but he’s shown great flashes on both ends of the floor this season. Looking like a nice pick.

Landry Fields – Caught me off-guard.

Nice list ghettosermon, I thought Rod Grizzard would develop in a solid NBA player too.  Satterfield and Diogu I thought would also pan out.

Jaron Rush and James White are two guys I thought would have great careers, didn’t really work out too well for either.  Jonathan Bender and Lenny Cooke come to mind as well. WTF ever happened to Lenny Cooke?

and I was upset the Bulls drafted a 23 year old skinny power forward in the 1st round….That man was Taj Gibson and I love him now. I’m sorry Taj.

Lenny Cooke was an absolute high school phenom. He was a projected top 10 pick after his junior season. His fall started after a few games in his senior year in which he turned 19 and apparently used all his high school basketball eligibility. I think it’s because he repeated a grade or something. He entered the draft without any senior year tape and to make things worst because of an injury couldn’t work out for teams. He went undrafted and kind of faded away. Street ball legend though. Another guy is Deangelo Collins who was a super talented player in Amare’s recruiting class. Went undrafted because of massive character and injury issues. As for James White I expected him to make it in the league. He was a freak athlete with long arms, big time potential as a defender and handled the ball like a point guard. I guess his lack of jump shot really hurt him. Came into Florida with D-Lee and was supposed to be the next VC, eventually transfered to Cinci and had a nice career. Got drafted by the Spurs and bounced around not sure where he plays now.

A couple of 1st pick overalls that I was wrong about:

Joe Smith – He was an absolute monster in his only two years at Maryland; 19.4 PPG, 10.7 RPG, 3.1 BPG and 1.5 SPG as a frosh and even better in his sophomore year. I was convinced he would be a future Hall of Famer and never even made one All-Star game. Was the 1st pick overall in his draft and would end up not even being one of the top 3 power forwards to come out of that class.

Yao Ming – I thought he would be a massive (no pun intended) bust. I figured he was too stiff and not athletic enough to be anything more than a solid pro. He had a really rough start to his NBA career and I remember telling all my friends how right I was about him but he proved me wrong shortly thereafter. Without his injuries he would probably be on track for the Hall of Fame and he still gave the Rockets several All-Star years.

I too questioned Yao’s ability to succeed in the NBA because of his lack of mobility, but I think we all didn’t really realize how skilled he was. For a guy his size he truly is one of the most skilled players to ever play in the NBA. His touch and passing were incredible. The peak days with Francis and later T-Mac were so amazing to watch. It’s so sad to see how his career has faded because of injuries because Yao was an elite player and nightmare to guard. I know it’s asking for too much but I want to see one more comeback attempt.

     1. Gerald Green — This one hurts because I thought he’d really be a Tracy McGrady clone in Boston… Yes, he did work hard, yes he did try and improve his game and yes he has tremendous potential… But he’s the primary example of what is needed to be in the NBA more than talent, the mental toughness… He doesn;t have that…

    2. Michael Beasley — With the way he blossomed in Kansas State, I thought he’d be better than Durant right off the bat… But instead, DRose, Westbrook, Mayo and even Brook Lopez outplayed him during his rookie season, a season that many expected him to dominate, the same way that Blake Griffin did perhaps… I think it has to be in the fact that he went to a Miami team that didn’t want to waste time on rookies commiting mistakes and inconsistencies… Unlike Rose who was given the keys to the team right from the start, I think he was pressured to become scorer no. 2 behind Wade and it never really panned out… Yes, he’s no bust… But he isn’t worthy of the number 2 pick.

    3. Tyrus Thomas/Stromile Swift — These long lost brothers have the same resume… Both played at LSU… Both are 6’9-6’10 thin frame and both were compared to Shawn in this site… Yep… Shawn Marion for Tyrus… Shawn Kemp for Stromile… Too bad neither of them did much to be on the same level worthy of their comparisons…

    4. Emeka Okafor — I really thought drafting Okafor would put the Bobcats in the NBA map immediately… As it turned out, he never had a breakout season other than his rookie year where he won the ROY and posted his best numbers as of yet…

    5. Marcus Fizer — yeah, he’s my idol way back in Iowa State where he used to dominate opposing players… I never really expected it to be this bad for my boy but it did… But during his tenure with the Bulls, he had respectable numbers… Yes, they are respectable considering that he’s part of the worst draft class in 2000… He posted 12 ppg and 7 rpg which is not that bad coming off the bench… It’s just one of those moments that when he got picked up by another team, he was never productive again…

    6. Marvin Williams — I thought this guy would make the Hawks look good despite the organization snubbing Chris Paul and Deron Williams… Yes, he was considered as the best player in the draft in 2005… He helped the Tar Heels win the National Championship… Yes, he is an elite level athlete… But all those are forgotten once Chris Paul and Deron Williams started showing the Hawks the mistake they made…

Special mentions to: Chris Taft, Dermarr Johnson, Rashad McCants, Sean May, Jerryl Sasser

The biggest ones for me have been:

Gerald Green- I bought into the hype that he was gonna be the next T-mac

Tyrus Thomas- He was an absolute beast in the NCAA tournament and I thought that it would translate into the NBA

Marvin Williams-He hasn’t been terrible but I thought the guy was going to be a flat out stud.

    Somewhat unfair due to injuries:

Greg Oden-I just hope that he can get healthy because it’s really a shame to see such talent wasted.

Shaun Livingston-Ugh thinking about his freak injury just gives me chills.

I also thought that Evan Turner would come out and contribute quickly but I won’t judge him yet considering it’s only been a season.

Greg Oden- I thought Greg Oden would be the next david robinson but injuries have killed that.  I’m now thinking Portland should have took Durant over Oden.  I wonder if Portland had taken Durant would they have won a championship and had a big three in Roy, Durant and Aldridge.

Brandon Jennings- while hes not great he’s better than I thought he would be.  Of course scoring 55 against Golden State in a way isn’t that great.  They need help on defense.

Donte Greene-  I thought he would be a scoring machine off the bench or even start.  I even had him as an all star I think on nbawire when it was around.

tyreke evans-  I didn’t think he’d win rookie of the year.  Now i feel he is the building piece for the kings.

Acie Law-  I thought he’d be a better player and play almost as good as Chauncey Billups.  Was I wrong

Nice thread ghettosermon I do agree with most of the guys you have posted there. Just a little note almost all listed players have found their why either to Europe or China and even there they couldn’t find the right place so double bust. I have got few Europeans who I thought would do really well in NBA however didn’t worked out:

Arvydas Macijauskas – He has signed with New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets in 2005 after being a superstar and one of the best scorers in previous few seasons in Euroleague. He has also helped Lithuanian National Team to win 2003 Euro Championship completely shutting down Spain with its young future superstars. He had a contract with NO for 3 years and had to buy out after first season where he played 19 games (149mins) and called the season complete waste of one year. Come back to Europe signed 9mill Euros deal with Olympiacos for 3 seasons (Largest deal in history at the time).

Nikoloz Tskitishvili – formal 5th overall pick in 2002. Was still raw when joined the league sort of Danillo Gallinary, but I thought with one-to-one coaching he will become a top league player. However, it has worked out to be the worst player ever selected at the 5th spot in NBA Draft.

Sofoklis Schortsanitis (Baby Shaq) – was selected at 34th pick in 2003 draft and I genuinely thought that this will be one of the greatest steals of second round of all time. The stupid contracts that he has signed with European teams had huge buyouts so none of the NBA teams wanted to commit to something that was still unknown. He was classified as overweight and low in skills further from the basket with bad free throw shooting (LIKE SHAQ). When his contract run out in 2010 summer (He had contract for 7 YEARS!!!) he tried NBA summer league at Clippers, however with all the hype about Griffin, Gordon and Jordan he disappeared and signed a contract with Maccabi Tel Aviv. He has managed to loose some weight and became much faster, quicker on pick n roll and more stronger around the basket. I believe he is in his prime time know and was selected Euroleague First Team in 2011. He is already 26 so I doubt he will ever open an NBA door. I would have paid so much just to see few minutes of Him against Shaq.

About Rod Grizzard, I saw him play live earlier this year in a game in the NBL (Australian pro-league), and he certainly had that athleticism, but aside from hustle plays he wasn’t very refined from what I can remember. Turns out he was released 4 games into the season, sad to see a player with potential end up at such lows.

But hey, he’s still making a living playing ball, and Australia is a nice place to live, so can’t feel too sorry for him!

    commenting on some listed here….

Rashad McCants should be in the league, he is a very talented player who is being blackballed.

Jeryd Bayless just needs to be in the right system, he is not a bust IMO.

Joe Smith…like McDyess was ruined by injuries.

Ademola Okulaja…good player…but if you wanna talk UNC…I really though Joe Forte was gonna do something.

Not going to say I was dead wrong but some minor surprises….

Wayne Ellington – didnt expect him to struggle so much as a shooter

Tim Duncan – hard to believe Chris King found this guy playing a pick-up game over in V.I., he was nearly redshirted as a freshman. (until the 3 time transfer Mahktar N’Diaye who was the Deacs top recruit that year was ruled ineligible)  As great as he was in college I always pegged him to be a solid NBA player but I never imagined he would be as dominant as he was from nearly start to finish.

Deron Williams – Thought he was a great player but I thought at the time that he should have been chosen behind Chris Paul and Raymond Felton.  Did not think he would be as nasty as he is now.

I remember on draft night thinking Sacramento threw away a draft pick on Jason Williams.

I thought Hollywood Robinson would have a better career than Sprewell or Horry.

I played against Jerryd Bayless and watched him a good amount in high school and his game has not evolved much since then, he has the same mentality, I root for him as I do for all Phoenix natives and his last few games of the regular season shows what he can do, I would just like to see him be more of a floor general.

Marcus Williams (Arizona)- We all knew he left too early but I thought he would have developed over time

Bill Walker- I tried to tell myself he would have the better pro career than Beasley, the verdict is still out but not looking too good.

Maurice Ager- Loved him and Shannon running the wings at MSU but thought he would have had more success due to a better jump shot.

James White- More of a track athlete than a basketball player.

Dee Brown- Seemed to be just as important to Illinois success as Deron Williams

Jrue Holliday- Didn’t think he would be capable of running the PG but thanks to Doug Collins I was wrong.

DeMar DeRozen- Thought he was next Gerald Green and at this point of his career he’s shown more than Green had.

Reyshawn Terry- Seemed to be a prototypical wing.

^^ Hey dude I think it’s a cheap shot to call Wagner a bust, IMO his situation is no different than Jay Williams. Wagner had an incurable form of colitis in which they actually had to remove his colon. He only really played his rookie year in which he started off a monster but his efficiency faded as the season went on, think Brandon Jennings rookie year. I really think he still would have been a great player had he not had the unfortunate disease. Not saying he’d be a star but he was already a good scorer as a rookie, he definitely had to improve on his guard skills but no denying the talent pre health conditions.

I haven’t even heard of this guy doing any thing in the NBA.  What team is he playing for, anyways?
