Had 12 blocks against Ole Miss Rebels ,in the last 6 games he had at least 6 blocks (3 games with 7& 2 with 6 blocks in addition to yesterday game)
seems that he is raising his stock in the draft boards

Apparently that was school record for blocks in one game too

He is a beast on defence. I don’t think there is a shot that has ever been taken that he hasn’t tried to block. You would want some good rebounders surrounding him.

The comparisons to Anthony Davis are obvious but the problem is that he makes Davis look like Karl Malone on offense compared to Noel.

This is a good point. There’s more to being a defensive anchor than just blocking shots. A defensive anchor can’t just go after shot blocks indiscriminately. They have to know which shots to go after without compromising the defense or rebounding position. Noel will almost always leave his man to go after a block.

For all the blocks Noel had last night, Ole Miss had 20 offensive rebounds. That’s awful. The best defensive anchors are the ones who can contest shots while also helping clean up the defensive possession.

Noel might block more shots, but he’s not a better defender than Anthony Davis, mainly because AD used more discretion when going after shots, in the process not compromising the defense or rebounding position.

I’d be shocked if his max vertical was over 35”, when your standing reach is over 9 foot and you cover as much ground as he does, you don’t need to jump super high to block shots.

In 2012 Nike Hoop Summit ,his measures was
    Height without shoes: 6’10
    Height with shoes: 6’11
    Weight: 216
    Wingspan: 7-4
    Standing Reach: 9’1.5

Ole miss didn’t know what a pump fake or a dump off pass is.
This guy tries to block everything and will leave his man to go for a block just about every single time.

    Anthony Davis: 95 blocks

    Nerlens Noel: 94 blocks

Find that kind of crazy, Nerlens needed one more block to be on par with him through 20 games, lol. Have to say though, while Nerlens is a definite force on defense, how has no one brought up that he took 1 shot and was 2-8 from the stripe? His shot blocking ability is glitzy and their is no question he makes an impact on defense, but he is far from perfect on that end as well.

Nerlens touch near the basket and lack of strength to develop post position are both fairly evident. I do not know how much his stock has been raised, he was already pretty high on most draft boards as is. Still believe their are a few guys from this draft who will turn out to be flat out better players.

While Nerlens has a chance to become a very solid defender at the next level, his ability to score effectively is a flat out question mark. Plus, factor in that he has been fouling and turning the ball over at a much higher rate than an Anthony Davis as well. I know no one here has brought out that comparison, just wanted to give some factors to think about. If Nerlens is the top pick in this draft, think that team will have more than likely made a mistake.

Hes a great Defender! GREAT, BUT he has no offense. He can dunk and catch lobs, but he still needs to add weight to his frame. I see him as Mutumbo if he can get a hook shot on Offense or develop some sort of foul line jumper. But he does not have it. You cant say his stock has risen because he is what we thought he was gonna be.

This guy is impressing me more and more. His offense is lightyears behind Anthony Davis but I dont think that is much of a worry to GMs. You can always teach offense. He’ll have plenty of years to develop moves and touch around the basket. He can get points off tip ins, lobs, short hooks, and drive and dishes. They wont have to feed him the ball on the court. You cant teach his motor, height, nor instincts. The thing that impresses me most is he knows who he is. He’s a bonafide athlete and his biggest weapon is his presence. Even though he blocked 12 shots, he may have altered 20 more shots. Altering shots is just as effective as blocking them. The fact that Anthony Davis had a better team around him makes me feel that Nerleans Noel has an edge on him as a shot blocker. Of course Davis is a better overall player, but Noel is growing on me.

I wouldn’t worry about Nerlens Noel’s weight. He’s only 18 years old, and he should be able to bulk up to about 235-240 lbs. However, his offense is going to have to start coming along soon. If he can develop a jump hook with both hands and knock down open jump shots, then that combined with his defense will give you a solid 10 year starter at PF-C.

I think Noel is a better shot blocker/alterer in the paint then Anthony Davis was. Davis is better at blocking shots outside the paint but overall if I had to pick one to block shots it would be Noel. Obviously Davis is a better offensive player but I don’t think it is as wide of a gap as most are making it out to be. If Noel was on the team last year instead of Davis I’m sure his offensive numbers would be higher. In his last 5 or so games Noel is showing the ability to consistently make left and right jump hooks. I also believe he is a better passer then Davis. His one glaring weakness right now is his ft shooting. He needs to work on that and get his confidence up before he becomes Dwight Howard.
