Wahoo757ParticipantIt’s been announced that the Hornets have been sold to the Saints owner for $338 million. http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/7809655/report-new-orleans-saints-owner-tom-benson-lines-buy-new-orleans-hornets
There’s already a forum discussing that, so I don’t want to get into that all that much. There have been rumors that there may be a name change in store for the New Orleans NBA Franchise once a new owner took over. http://www.slamonline.com/online/nba/2012/04/new-orleans-hornets-to-change-team-name-once-sold/
I thought it would be pretty funny/interesting to see what you guys would suggest as a new team name. So if you were in charge of making a new team name for the New Orleans Hornets, what would your new team name be?

ProudGrandpaParticipantThe…wait for it…Hurricanes!
I’m sorry, I’m sorry.
But what better way to help the city continue to reunite. It’s like Kurt Vonnegut, using humor to ease tense situations, ya know? lol
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 8:48am #658809
Wahoo757ParticipantI wonder if it’s to soon to use Hurricanes as their team name. It’s relevant to their geography, and it’s a fairly common professional sports team name (Carolina Hurricanes). But I doubt they use it because of Katrina, it would upset a lot of people.
EDIT:Wow ProudGrandpa, great minds think alike, I started writing this before I even saw your comment.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 8:50am #658811
Wahoo757ParticipantIn all seriousness, though, I think an intersesting and unique team name that’s relevant to their area would be the New Orleans Voodoo. What do you guys think about that?
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 8:54am #658812
GoodbyeChandlerParticipantHow people would feel if New Orleans two biggest teams were named the Saints and the Voodoo. Would be somewhat of a contradiction.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 8:56am #658815
JoeWolf1They should take a page from UL-Lafayette and go with the Ragin Cajuns.

HayatoKanzaki1ParticipantHow about the New Orleans Priests? I mean New Orleans does have an extensive catholic background.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 9:04am #658821
JoeWolf1No offense to Catholics, but I don’t think it’d be a very fitting to name an NBA team after a group of virgins that have recently gotten bad publicity for molesting children.

mgreener_34ParticipantI feel like it would be best if Charlotte became the Hornets again. It’s a travesty that there’s already a team named the Jazz, because what would be more fitting then the Louisiana/New Orleans Jazz? But really I wouldn’t mind if they kept the name, but changed the uniform to the Saints Black and Gold!

B FreeParticipantzach. Voodoo is the name of the citys arena football team, while not the team isn’t that important it wouldn’t want to seem affliated

Memphis MadnessParticipantThey could name it after a famous po boy joint in town named Mother’s.
The New Orleans Mothers would be a pretty cool name.
Ah $hit, New Orleans has Eric Gordon, Greivous Vazquez, Chris Kaman, and Anthony Davis. No way we are beating these Mothers tonight!

JordoParticipantThe name is fine but if i could change it i would want the teams to swap names. Let Charlotte go back to Hornets and let that Bobcats name RIP. Have the New Orleans Jazz name come back then let the fans in Utah vote on a new name. Not sure how Utah fans would feel about it though.

TheArtistPaysthePriceParticipantThe official colors of Mardi Gras are green, purple and yellow. The Jazz went to Utah with the name and I remember just a few years ago they thought about giving it back but at a big price. The Hornets balked at it. Jazz is an art form actually native to New Orleans. How many places can say that. The team in Utah needs a new name because there is no jazz in Utah. The Stockton/Malone era deserves to be acknowledged and thats the hard part. I think the city will try to sue the Jazz in an effort to get the rights back or at least lower the cost. The Browns won something similar from Art Modell. This is different and will surely lose but I think its worth it.

Memphis MadnessParticipantThe New Orleans Connicks. Or the Super Connicks.
Or they could call them the New Orleans Neville Brothers.
Perhaps the New Orleans Longs after Huey Long. Or the New Orleans Kingfish. Probably the best name.
Or, Miami has the Heat so what about the New Orleans Humidity?

Memphis MadnessParticipantIf I were them I would call my team the New Orleans Polygamist Mormons and then force a nickname trade with the Utah Jazz.
Although that would probably be the highest selling jersey of all time. Who wouldn’t buy an Anthony "the Unibrow" Davis New Orleans Polygamist Mormons jersey?
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 12:40pm #658915
dmo21ParticipantI like the Blues and the Hurricanes as both are good team names and are something relevant to New Orleans. I think something towards their French heritage would be cool too. Some others I though of, the New Orleans Bayou, the New Orleans Bounce (bounce is a type of hip hop formed in New Orleans, and also relates to basketball), La New Orleans Resistance (say it like your French),or the New Orleans Cyclones.
0 - Posted on: Fri, 04/13/2012 - 12:59pm #658923
bloodshyParticipantI’d be all for giving NO the name back. Frankly, I’ve always thought "Jazz" was a goofy name for my favorite team since it was in a Jazzless town. At the same time, if I owned the Jazz I’d demand a fat check to give up the name (simply because NO would be willing to pay for it and the NBA is a business).
Jazz belongs w/a NO franchise. I’m not sure what name Utah would pick up in lieu, but I’m sure they’d think of something.

WhenOctoberEndsParticipantEver since Utah got the Jazz they’ve been putting "zz" in other team names, like Buzz. If they would seriously sell the Jazz name back to N.O., they should change their name to Blizzard. Makes geographic sense and they get to keep their "zz". Charlotte would reclaim their rightful brand of Hornets, everybody’s happy. Utah Blizzard. New Orleans Jazz. Charlotte Hornets.

CajunCarolinianParticipantOk I made an account just to tell some of you to stop. First of all, every SINGLE article I’ve read has something about Bounty Hunters and Hurricanes. Just shut up. Not even remotely funny, original or plausible for that matter so just shut up and stop wasting the space of the forum. It’s almost offensive to think that you think it’s funny to name the franchise after a tragedy that RECENTLY took the lives of countless citizens yet you add "haha".
0 - Posted on: Mon, 04/16/2012 - 12:53pm #660141
CajunCarolinianParticipantLook I’m thrilled as ever that Benson has bought the team and has a vision for the team including the excitement of rebranding a team using it’s city’s roots. I know I’m about to get some junk for that comment before but it’s okay it needed to be said. My thoughts of original New Orleans names for the now "Hornets" would be: Krewe and Big Chiefs. My personal favorite is Po Boys but I don’t see, Big Chiefs or Po Boys being popular enough. I really hope Krewe is pushed on the comittee, I’ve heard that name somewhere, I don’t like "Knights" but I like "Nights". Knights seems to generic (like a high school’s last resort choice for a nickname") Bottom Line: New Orleans is an American Original in itself, the franchise should have an original name. Let the hatin begin…

0- Posted on: Mon, 04/16/2012 - 1:06pm #660151
CajunCarolinianParticipantAlthough as a current Hornets fan I’d love to have the Jazz back, Stern announced it will be staying in Utah. Stockton and Malone’s success there certainly has a place in NBA history as the Utah Jazz.

- Posted on: Mon, 04/16/2012 - 1:04pm #660153
HitsterParticipantI doubt that the Jazz would give up that name given the association with Coach Sloan, Mailman and John Stockton etc. But if New Orleans did give up the Hornets monikor then Charlotte returning to that name would make sense and perhaps give the team a new identity.
If a Jazz reference was needed then you could maybe have New Orleans Bluesmen or New Orleans Rhythm.

0 - Posted on: Mon, 04/16/2012 - 1:27pm #660162
CajunCarolinianParticipantPossible: Krewe (my absolute favorite), Knights/Nights (Nightlife), Pirates/Buccaneers(Nod to previous ABA team), Gators (LSU fans might hate it haha), Haze (better than Humidity but would the mascot be a Blunt?), Beat/Rhythm/etc. (reference to Musical history but Jazz have a music name already).
Not Possible: Hurricanes (way way way way too soon), Priests (too specific to one religion although huge Catholic population), Blues(maybe Memphis not NOLA we’re jazz), Humidity(bad name and too similar to Heat and we don’t have LeBron so…), Bounty Hunters (wow), Blizzard (really?)…
others I’m sure…I’m posting too much but Benson said it would be a name synonymous with New Orleans, some of these are ridiculous not even for the sake of humor just ignorance.
