The Splash DocParticipantDo you guys think he will ever be a #1 option. We used to hear the next LeBron, Baby Jordan he has all the tools but just seems out of whack in Memphis. Going in to his 3rd year what do you expect from Mayo this year where most players blossom.
I see 22ppg 6apg 4rpg 1.5spg 45%-37%-83% in about 35mpg

gregoden08ParticipantLol I don’t think he will come close to averaging 6 apg. I don’t think he will ever be a true first option. Just an amazing second option. I wouldn’t be suprised to see him average 22 ppg next year though.

RUDEBOY_ParticipantI think if he played with a better point guard his stats will go up..He has the talent to be a nightly 20 point scorer

nascarforthedeadParticipantI really like OJ’s game and think he could be a true 1st option but before that happens he has to work on 2 things. The first one is he needs to be even more effective w/o the ball ala rip hamilton or ray allen. The second one is he needs to attack the basket more. Too often he settles for difficult jumpers when he has the ability to attack and finish w/ strength. He’s got to get to the line for some easy points.

OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantOJ isn’t nearly as athletic as people thought he was. That’s why he hasn’t lived up to his lofty expectations; and that’s why he doesn’t get to the line often. He just can’t create enough separation from his man. On the rare occasions that he does create effective separation, he doesn’t have the length to consistently finish at the rim.

billykParticipantOJ could be a 1st option on a non playoff team, but on a championship team I see him as a 3rd option.. He has a decent handle, sweet stroke (mid range & 3ptr) and he is a very good on ball defender.. Next year I see him putting up 18-20 ppg 4 rebs and 4 asst… I dont ever see him as an top 5 shooting guard, but he has the potential to be an all NBA defender…

Mr. 19134ParticipantWHat do you mean OJ isn’t athletic he has a 40 inch vertical leap and his combines numbers are right up there with Derrick Rose’s overall and even better then another supposed super athlete in Avery Bradley.
And Mayo I can see averaging 21 points, and 6 assists with the chemistry that team already has and people like Gay for kickout 3’s and feeding Gasol and Z Bo in the post I think Mayo can easily get 6 assists this year considering Memphis wants the ball in his hands more then Conleys’
Remember coming into the draft Mayo was compared too, and compared himself too Deron Williams. He wants to be that type of scorer slash facilitator.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantThe thing is he be may waiting to do that on another team…he’s a 20 ppg guy but in Memphis Gay and Randolph are taking the majority of shots…If Mayo was 1st option in the offense he’d be at least a 20 point guy….He passes well and defends better than most give him credit for…Another thing holiding Mayo back is the PG situation in Memphis…If a guy was able to defend his man and pass the ball to the Sg and Sf then Mayo and Gay would both get 20 a game and look better together…

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantHe and Mayo would be a great back court( when Xavier gets into the swing of the NBA game, he’ll be a very nice shooter and slasher nexy to Mayo at Pg) I always thought Mayo looked like a Wade without the elite finishing ability but with better outside shot.,..
I dont think Conley can turn back the clock and change the Grizzles mind about him as a Starting Pg in the NBA..
Mayo at the point-Henry at the two and Gay at the 3 would be a very similar wing tandem to the Billups/Hamilton/Prince trio in Detroit…They do need Thabeet to become a mini Mt.Mutombo and for Zac and Gasol to become the versitile and defensive minded Wallace Front court…The Grizzles would be taking to the next level if Xavier Henry becomes a good starting Sg and ease Mayo’s transition to the Point….

billykParticipantI think Melo is best served playing SG cause of his ability to knock down shots, he isnt really a slasher type… He is at his best in catch and shoot situations and one or two dribble pull ups.. I dont think he would be a effective full time PG, maybe in spot duty..

Mr. 19134ParticipantEvan Turner for OJ Mayo
We should do this trade!!!
Turner can come in and stat right away at PG and Henry at 2Guard.
This enables us to have that guy to go to at the end of the games in Mayo who can average over 20 in this league.
And it also gives The Grizz and legitimate PG who may develop into the next Penny.
It’s not rocket science that Turner is a better PG then wingman.

durantula83ParticipantGreat trade idea, I almost took back the point for that "next Penny" sh!t though.

OrangeJuiceJonesParticipantJust because he has a 40-inch vert does not mean he’s athletic. By that logic, Luke Jackson (36-inch vertical at the combine) is athletic, as well. Anyone who watches him play often enough can see that he has his fair share of trouble getting to the hoop and finishing. He’s nowhere near the slasher that D-Rose is, nor will he ever be.

The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantand Turner would be the playmaker on the Grizzles although Mayo could have those duties this year in memphis…
A trade I’d think about for sure is Turner and Lou Williams for Oj and Thabeet…it makes sense money wise and the Grizzles get some scoring back for Mayo…Turner would absolutly be the Pg in Memphis and their starting lineup of
Turner-Henry-Gay-Randolph and Gasol would be a good balance of slashers, shooters, low post threats and playmakers at Pg and C…Lou Williams and Darrel Arthur are two sparks off the bench…Sma young Young and Mike Comley are good role players too IMO…Thabeet would be risk vs reward defensive Big Man that we can take a Risk on By trading Williams…Turner and Mayo is a fair trade too,…Philly’s line up would look like this
Holiday-Mayo-Iggy-Brand-Hawes-Thad-Speights-Thabeet-Meeks-Nocioni-Vasquez??? I’d want him too if I’m Philly …
I have done this deal on 2K and it’s a win win in the game…I know’s it’s just a game but think about the potential Holiday/Mayo back court with Iggy as the Sf…And Thabeet may never be worth a # 2 pick but heah, we need a shot blocker…

kurtu17Participantwow i would love this trade for memphis…but the potential of turner for philly would be to great to pass up…but even though i can see mayo working better with Holiday and Iggy…
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 12:29pm #408949
The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantThe Grizzlies have lacked a true playmaker at the Pg their entire franchise…Now I think Mayo is more of a scorer than Point so they don’t have that…Turner looks like he would be the perfect big Point…a triple threat to score, pass and rebound..he defends well and both Xavier and Rudy are pretty good defenders too…with a group of scorers in Memphis(Gay,Zac,Gasol,X man, Arthur and Conley believe it or not) they could use a guy that can get his guys the right shots…on top of that he can score the ball too with the ball in his hands…
Mayo becomes the Sixers New # 1 scoring option and that’s what Mayo and the Sixers want most…Mayo in Philly would be in a Ray Allen/Rip hamilton role with a lot more freedom to handle the ball …Jrue and Mayo can lock down most back courts in the League…they can switch off offensive players and both have great passing ability…Iggy gets to play in the role best suited for him…the role he played In the FIBA games and with a top flight Pg and elite shooter in Holiady and Mayo…It would shorten their back court/wing rotation…with Holiday/Mayo/Iggy/Thad playing the majority of minutes at the pg,sg and sf spots…

IndianaBasketballParticipantIF OJ Mayo is a team’s number one option, that’s a non-playoff team.
0 - Posted on: Sun, 10/03/2010 - 1:06pm #408956
The Scare Crow ReturnsParticipantPlayoffs…For a second think about OJ’s total package of playmaking ability and scoring combined with the fact he can get his in the offense in Philly without dominating the ball because of his great jump shot…Would Eric Gordon on the Sixers be a playoff team…OJ has the skills to be a easy 20 ppg guy and with a bad season running the new core of Holiday/Mayo/Iggy/Thad/Brand/Hawes/Speights/Thabeet/Meeks they could stand to get another top 5 pick and go for Perry Jones or Enes Kanter…I’d willing to give the scoring load to to OJ and Holiday, with Brand as the low post guy and Iggy slashing as the 4th option, Thad is the 6th man and can get 15 off the bench, Speights also backs up Brand and Hawes-A good scorer Center that can get 10 to 15 a night in the starting line up with play makers like Holiday,Mayo and Iggy…Hawes also spreads the floor and creates room for the slashing Trio of Jrue, Juice and Iggy
Give me a bad year if that was to happen because I still think that team wins 40 games and makes the playoffs year 1…I’d love to run the young guns and get a top 5 Pick…I want a Star SF/PF hybrid like Perry Jones( who I think with a little focus will become a Durant/Garnett like star) or rock solid Pf/C like Kanter….

IndianaBasketballParticipantI don’t think a team with Gordon as it’s top option is a playoff team either. Gordon is a second or third option at best.
I think Mayo is overrated. He hasn’t nor will he ever meet the hype that was given to him during high school. 22 points and 6 assists per game next season? He’s going to put up 22 with Randolph (the team’s number one option), Gay (who was just paid max money) and Gasol? He’s averaging only three assists per game for his career… He’s going to jump up to six next season? He isn’t a great passer. He’s not a great playmaker either, especially for others. 18, 4 and 4 are more realistic numbers for him next season.
The truth about Mayo is, he’s a tweener. He’s not nor is he ever going to be a great combo guard like Dwayne Wade. He lacks the size, strength and length to be a bonafied two and lacks the vision to be a point guard. He’s a second or third option at best on a playoff team.
And I’m surprised you’d rather have him as a first option over Iguodala, who’s proven he can lead a team to the playoffs as it’s top option.
