Status QuoParticipantAlthough it’s not a finalized number, the projection, if true, could spike the potential of more player movement this summer and also alter the thoughts of some of the big names who could opt out of contracts at the start of free agency. Teams with future cap flexibility can look at that 5 million as cap space to not only lure top free agents but fill out rosters with quality role players. It could also influence more movement in the trade market, aiding in teams being able to absorb more larger contracts in trades. What players and teams do you see taking advantage of the added space in free agency or on the trade market?

Rip255I see Carmello leaving the Knicks (though many will disagree), but otherwise it’s a weak free agent class. I think the best teams with be able to add depth by signing above average role players from poor teams, or re-signing quality players who have been on cheap deals and know the system.
The end result will be the strong teams getting stronger next season, and greater flexibility for teams undertaking total rebuilds in 2015

NardDog NationParticipantIt’s about time. This is the first cap increase in 5 years, despite the league posting record profits the entire while.

DolanCareParticipantThe teams that aren’t cheap will love this change. That list includes the Knicks, Nets, Lakers, Celtics.
The teams that will cry about any cap raise are the teams that already damningly cheap. That list inclues OKC, Trailblazers and you could argue the Clippers. (Sterling has been better lately, but he still has a lot to prove from the days he pinched every penny).
The cap raise is reletively small. I would prefer it if the money went to the low payscale players, but it won’t. The money will go to making the big fish happy.

Magic JordanParticipantThe Blazers are not cheap. They have no problem paying the tax as they have done so multiple times throughout the year. Paul Allen is the richest owner in the league, and he is willing to pay.

OrserParticipantThe luxury tax is also set to increase to $77 million in 2014-2015 and to $81 million in 2015-2016 (its currently $71.1m). In some ways, this could matter even more than the salary cap increase. http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/233008/NBA-Luxury-Tax-Projected-To-Increase-By-77-Percent

hbomb3300ParticipantI think the increase will allow the Thunder to offer Reggie Jackson a pretty solid contract… he better not expect more than 10 mil a year though. At the same time this increase makes the Thunder look even dumber for trading Harden since a max contract for him wouldn’t of been over the new salary cap limits.

MrManalo43Participantbut i feel like he’ll pull a Harden/McGrady and want to go somewhere else to shine in a starting role. i’d love to keep him on the Thunder, but the dude will want his own spotlight somewhere else. New York might actually make a push for him REAL hard to replace Felton

HitsterParticipantA lot of owners have the rule they won’t pay luxury tax but will pay up to it. This increase will certainly help the teams the other guys have mentioned above, I’d add Dallas top the list as Mark Cuban will put his hands in his pockets when he needs to.
It will also give teams like the Heat if they retain the big 3 a bit more flexability to add depth to their roster.

Scott42444ParticipantThis will be especially helpful to the teams already competing for the title. As someone already mentioned, it’s a weak free agent class but Carmelo might be looking to change teams. A lot of analysts list Chicago as a great fit, but the Bulls would have to get rid of their 2 1st rounders this year (15 and 19) AND Dunleavy just to give Melo $17 million. Or, if they were interested in adding Nikola Mirotic, they would have to ship out Taj Gibson as well. This $5 million dollar increase would be HUGE in allowing them to keep their picks and possibly only trade Dunleavy or maybe 1 pick in order to get him on the roster. As someone else already mentioned, that could be huge for OKC keeping Reggie Jackson. Lance Stephenson was originally JUST out of reach to the Pacers (due to Paul George’s extension being raised due to the Rose rule). An extra $5 million will give them a lot more room to keep him in the fold.
