So I’ve been reading a lot of posts and threads about how Rubio’s passing and probing will override his defensive ills. Then they have the nerve to say “Just like Nash, his passing is so good, it evens out his defense.”

Okay, now let me introduce you to Steve Nash.
    -2x MVP
    -7x All Star
    -7x All NBA Teamer
    -2x Skills Challenge Champ

Now that I’ve said that.. let me tell you a little bit about Steve Nash.. He’s not the strongest player, not the biggest, and he won’t lock you down. But he is very VERY pesky. Not only that, throw in 3 of the biggest intangibles in the league..

    1. He has terrific timing. (I’m not sure Rubio is there)
    2. His leadership is at the top. (Rubio is not vocal whatsoever)
    3. He is probably the TOUGHEST PG in the league. He will stand up to anybody, he’ll play with stitches, he’ll guard the other teams strong PG, he’ll play bloody. (And Rubio? Well, he’s afraid to come to the NBA)

Now let’s throw in shooting. Rubio’s mid range shot is mediocre, while Steve Nash is a yearly 50-40-90 player. Which means, he shoots over 50% from the field, 40% from behind the arc, and 90% from the charity stripe.

    Read this and NEVER say…

“Rubio’s offensive talent will negate his defense, look at Steve Nash”

    Yeah… Look at Steve Nash.

Before Nash went to the Suns…he was not a top 10 point guard in the NBA. He was averaging 7 assists for like 4 seasons in a row.

It’s all about going to the right place. Nash did late in his career ( didn’t have to play defense, run and gun, 3 capable 20pgg scorers and couple knockdown shooters) and we see what happened.

Making a thread about this actually just adds more fuel to the fire, regardless of whether you agree with the comparison or not.

And by the way, you should really hold judgement on Rubio until he plays a regular NBA season, everything your saying is really not valid.

Comparing a players NBA accolades to a player who hasn’t played an NBA game, is like comparing a pre-schoolers cursive handwriting to a college seniors

I’ve seen threads comparing someone not in the L to a very good player in the L and we say ‘that comparson is BS what a dumbo’ then I come across here and I see people saying ‘wait a bit we never know’… Steve Nash is a tough player man Rubio “may” develop toughness but uh most euros are known to be softies but I guess Galinari and Bargnani can become bangers also if given the time? And uh I just wanna add that sure he wasn’t a “star” by NBA standards but like CWEBB said you just need someone to believe and uh when they did Nash became a “star” I’m not sayn Rubio can’t do it but his attitude right now doesn’t make me a fan and if it isn’t the NBA we really don’t care what kinda player you are you probably couldn’t hang with the big boys

if youve actually seen rubio play then youl know his anticipation and timing are some of his greatest attributes, on both ends of the floor.

and about him not being tough… did he not play the gold medal game with half a wrist!? im going to guess that if that was derrick rose youd be in his ass in a flash.

I personally hate NBA Comparisons when you are talking about a player who may not even be out of HS and he is being compared to a franchise player in the NBA. Also what part of the NBA player’s career are we talking about as has rightly been pointed out about Steve Nash who was a complimentary starter before he went to Phoenix and became a double MVP etc.

Rubio’s defense is already better than Nash’s. But it’s not written anywhere he’ll be a better offensive player: he could be as good as Nash as a passer, but don’t ever forget that Nash is also a very good scorer. His shoot is really dangerous, and also he has a lot of moves to attack the basket and to create his own shoot. Rubio has to improve his shooting if he wants to be really efficent as an NBA player: a good shoot gives you one step of advantage, since your opponent cannot leave you too many space…

Rubio’s still really young. He could be as good as Nash, but he has to improve. Right now, on the offensive side, Nash is way better than him…

I was actually pissed when the Wolves selected Rubio at 5… I thought Jennings and Lawson, as well as a few others were better… Although I was more pissed with them taking Flynn at 6… anyways… After watching Rubio over the last year or so, that cat can play ball… he has a natural feel for the game. His defense has gotten way better and he has gotten stronger, but he still definitely has room for improvement. Questioning his toughness is weak! The kid is still only 19 and has been playing with the big boys of Spain since he was 14…regardless of what you think of Euro ball, that’s impressive. I think he made a good choice staying in Europe for 2 more years before hitting the NBA at the old age of 20… he just has to improve his shooting and add a little more strength and that kid will be a star… maybe not Nash, but will still be damn good. Have you heard what all the NBA players have said about him after playing him in the Olympics or World Championships? If they think he is a badass, then I’d take their word over anyone on this site…

And, I hate comparisons. They are never fair to either player. Rubio’s game is similar to Nash’s style of play, but they are 2 completely different players. How many “Next Michael Jordan’s” have we seen? Now its the “Next Kobe” or “Next D-Wade” or “Next LBJ” or “Next CP3”. Its all bullshit. Let the player be the player they are…

why does everyone say rubio is such a bad defender? here are some quotes from people on the US sqaud after the game the other day.

“He’s an amazing defender, that’s one thing that stood out to me is how well he pressured the ball and disrupted our offense.”- Kevin Durant

“He’s gotten bigger and he plays outstanding defense, and because he’s a pass-first guard – he’s going to be liked by everybody who plays with him” -Coach K

Not only that, but he also took the ball away from d rose twice. He also won the ACB defensive player of the year in 2009, and has also led the league in steals twice.

His vision, feel for the game and passing skills are off the charts and are nearly unmatched by any pg in the world right now. I think he will be one of the top point guards in the league in just a few seasons time.
