Sam Young
He is a weak ball handler and he doesnt have an nba caliber jumper. He isnt a good passer and all he brings to the table is elite strength and athleticism. Remember Joey Graham from Oklahoma State?,the guy who was soooo much stronger and athletic than everybody he faced in college? Well if you dont remember you can locate him at the veeeeerrrryyy end of the Toronto Raptors bench or look at the quarterly stat sheet at a game were it says by his name "DNP-CD." Sam Young is so much like Graham its scary, starting hfrom how they both have hitches in their jumpers to how they both are going into the NBA at 24 years old. He isnt an NBA player.
Jorry says he is not an NBA player. I thought he came up with all that info himself, which impressed me until I clicked on Sam Young's name and everything Jorry said was right there on his page, from the comparison to the hitch shot to him being an older player. Thought he had an original thought for once!
I think people are also sleeping on Sam Youngs defense I would pick him over Clark (cant shoot or dribble) and Henderson (overrated) but not Harden, Harden is a pro player
I think he will be a good player Drew, and Jorrye he is nowhere near as big as Graham. Graham has body-builder body with no athleticism or skill, and Young's jump shot isn't all that horrendous it just looks funky. I can see him being a Danny Granger type player, and everybody thought Granger was going to be garbage when he came out.
i dont even know why someone would put him in the top 10!!! he has shakey handles, not a great shot, yes athletic, but so is 65% of the people in the nba! if he goes top 10 i will cry. at best he is a poor mans gerald wallace, but shorter!!! at best!!!
I think Sam Young is underated but saying you would take him over the best players in college basketball is a little crazy. He reminds me a little bit of Jason Richardson
Agreed! I wouldn't take him over Griffin or Thabeet just because those guys have so much upside, but I think Young will make a very big splash in the NBA for whatever team chooses to pick him
has improved every single year he has played ball. I like his game and could surprise some folks next playoffs with some good contribution of the bench.
That's the guy he should model his game after. Battier is a spot up shooter, who scraps for rebounds and defends the perimeter. If Young can do that, he will have a very successful NBA career.
Again, a perfect fit for the Bulls roster. With his perimeter defense, spot-up shooting, ability to rebound, and athleticism on the break it would be WISE for the Bulls to do what they can to bring him to Chicago.
I'm looking in terms of roles and responsibilities. Battier's game is all about perimeter defense, spot-up shooting, and some rebounding. That's exactly the same kind of role I see Young fulfulling on the next level, hopefully with the Chicago Bulls. Of course Battier knows how to take charges, but he can't play above the rim like Young. Overall, I think it's a pretty fair comparison when you look at roles at the NBA level.
John Paxson and Gar Forman,
Do you want HEART, TOUGHNESS and INSTINCTS (DeJuan Blair) or HEIGHT, POTENTIAL and LOW BASKETBALL IQ (B.J. Mullens...aka Eddy Curry)?
#16
The choice is easy...it's DeJuan Blair. I'm tired of hearing about his size and his knees. The kid bounced back from his knee issues by winning a state title in high school, then freshman of the year in the Big East, then player of the year in the Big-East (after dominating the likes of Thabeet, Monroe and Harangody), and now he's headed to the NBA. You shouldn't try to predict injuries or judge measurements, just go with what you see during 5 on 5 action. This kid is what I like to call a "PITTBull" in the paint. Not only is that a clever play on words, but more importantly it's the truth.
I figure his NBA career puts him somewhere between Paul Millsap and Wes Unseld.
#26
Again, the choice is easy. The Bulls need TOUGHNESS, ATHLETICISM and SIZE on the perimeter. That's Sam Young. Coincidentally, he also went to Pitt and played with DeJuan Blair. No, I'm not an alum there. I just know who the Bulls need. This guy can defend the perimeter, finish on the break, scrap for rebounds, block shots from behind and spot up, then knockdown a jumper. On top of all that, he grew up a BULLS FAN idolizing Michael Jordan. That's why he wore #23 at Pitt. Much like Blair, I see him as a "PITTBull" on the perimeter. Again, a clever play on words, but also the truth.
I figure his NBA career puts him somewhere between Shane Battier and Michael Cooper.
So, to wrap up.
Forget "BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE" or make that "BEST POTENTIAL AVAILABLE" and GO GET yourself two "PITTBulls"....DeJuan Blair and Sam Young!!!
* It gives you VERSATILITY to match-up against any front-line style in the league.
(Also, trade BG7, post draft, for Terrence Williams!!!)
I can't believe the Bulls passed on him and Blair at #26. They could have used him on the wing. With him growing up a Bulls fan and MJ fan, I sincerely hope he sticks it to John Paxson and Gar Forman for passing on him.
Congrats Memphis, you got yourself a steal.

Sam Young conitues to show me that he is a big time player and that he is one of the very few guys that will an make impact on the next level as a rookie. I do not understand why mock drafts have him a mid to late first rounder. I think he is a top five pick and he could play three position in the NBA. I would draft him over guys like James Harden, Chase Budinger,Gerald Henderson, and Earl Clark. Depending on what a team may need only guy i would draft over him is Blake Griffin and may be Thabeet.
