It has just came out today Shabazz Muhammad’s father, Ron Holmes was caught lying about his sons age, saying Shabazz was born on November 13th 1993 but now it turns out to be he was born exactly a year earlier than that. He also lied about his son’s birth city, saying that he was born in Los Angeles when he apparently was born in Long Beach, CA. People lying about pointless things like ages can really question your reputation. I’m not calling him another Manti Te’o but could this hurt his draft status?

As Bazz’s dad has said before, he named his kids with unique names so they can be catching and easily become household names. “Shabazz”.

Saying he was born in Los Angeles would be another one of these perks that could help him become a household name. I guess his thought process was sort of like this, “The hometown kid plays for the Lakers”. Something along those lines, I’m guessing.

Long Beach is in Los Angles County so that’s not a big deal to me.

The age thing is weird, I’ll give you that. But I don’t consider calling LA his place of birth a lie at all. Long Beach is like a suburb or township to LA so for a national audience he just wants his place of birth associated with LA. This happens all the time for people born around big cities. The rapper game was born and raised and raps about Compton yet he has LA tatted on his face. It’s a culture thing. A lot of athletes born outside of Philly in say Chester county or something will say they’re from Philly because if they say Chester only locals will know what they’re talking about.

I live in Long Beach, and NOBODY here says they are from L.A. We have a lot of, and perhaps too much, civic pride in our city. Strong Beach all day.

Yeah… I live in Cali and people from Long Beach 99% of the time claim LBC and not LA.

Plus, The Game was born in L.A. but grew up in Compton.

Shabazz’s father first insisted according to the article that Shabazz was born in Nevada. So no bizarre marketing angle here in a completely dumb scheme by his father.

I’m not surprised because I read an article back in 2009 saying that he was a 16 year old freshman.

I still don’t get how someone can hide their real age in the 21st century in a first world country. Don’t they check people’s documents?
