Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantThis is a question that I must shape very carefully.
Kobe came into the league to an aging L.A. Laker team. Shaq came on board and made the Lakers instant contenders. Kobe grew into a role that he didn’t have ALL the pressure on him, as it was all on Shaq. Kobe got his reputation as a winner, after that 3peat. They made it to the Finals, then lost to the Pistosn. Then it happened, Phil was out, Shaq was out.. Brand new Laker team. Kobe had to learn to be the number 1 option on the Lakers. With that, he had a fire and motivation in his eyes. He got better, a lot better. He feeds off motivation, and all these problems were enough motivation. He matured and became a leader.. Not only that, he became that cold blooded clutch performer. Now here is my question:
If Shaq never went to L.A., would Kobe have been this leader, clutch performer, and player that he is now?

SteroidParticipantI think it was noted that Kobe has always been a hard worker and determined to be the best he could be since high school. He talked about that in an interview. I really don’t think a player’s passion and motivation to be good at the game changes that much from high school throughout the pros. Most players are just misunderstood about their work ethic, etc, but it shows how much they actually want to win when they start making millions. Money only makes you more of who you truly are. But back on topic, I believe Kobe has always been determined to be the best he could before Shaq. He was putting up big numbers while Shaq was there, and he put up bigger numbers when he left. Kobe would have been the same without Shaq: hungry to win.

bdoody42ParticipantKobes dedication and hard work made Kobe. He was always confident and believed in his abilities. He has himself to thank for the most part.

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantBut you guys must admit, the motivation of Shaq leaving had to help him. It made him a leader and a better clutch performer.

SupParticipantKobe was nice before Shaq and after Shaq, so the answer simply no. When you look at 96 draft night, Kobe forced a trade to LA. So yeah Kobe made Kobe.

BasketballGuru24ParticipantShaq leaving just made him try harder to become one of the best, but i do think he always was a hard worker and strived for perfection

Mr.Knick 32ParticipantShaq allowed Kobe to develop with no rush. He allowed Kobe to craft his game like a potential superstar without the public ripping of the media.

Mr. 19134ParticipantI do think that if Shaq wasn’t around and Kobe had to carry the whole load them few extra years his body would be more worn down then it is now.

raybeasParticipantShaq needed someone to take the ball out of his hands in the fourth quarter so he wouldnt get sent to the line twenty times. Kobe (and Wade) provided him with that someone.

NYK2010ParticipantGood pt Mr. 1934, Kobe obviously wouldn’t have 5 rings. That Lakers team would’ve been totally different let say they kept Eddie Jones and Kobe together. Kobe probably would be great but no way would he have experienced all those extra playoff games. The 2000 Finals, 01 WCF and 02 WC Semis doubtful he gets opportunity to shine their if they don’t have Shaq.
Also if Shaq doesn’t come to the Lakers, would they have even traded Vlade Divac for Kobe who knows.
This was the Lakers roster in 1995-96 season year before Shaq came.
Coach: Del Harris
Players: Cedric Ceballos – Elden Campbell – Nick Van Exel – Vlade Divac – Eddie Jones – Anthony Peeler – Sedale Threatt – Magic Johnson – George Lynch – Derek Strong – Corie Blount – Fred Roberts – Anthony Miller – Frankie KingSeason Record: 53.29 (.646)
Playoff Record: 1-3
The return of Magic Johnson wasn’t enough and the Lakers lost in the first round of the Playoffs to the Houston Rockets. Magic retired for good after thatThe year Shaq and Kobe came tot he Lakers
Coach: Del Harris
Players: Eddie Jones – Shaquille O’Neal – Nick Van Exel – Elden Campbell – Kobe Bryant – Byron Scott – Jerome Kersey – Travis Knight – Derek Fisher – Sean Rooks – Corie Blount – Robert Horry – George McCloud – Cedric Ceballos – Rumeal Robinson – Joe Kleine – Larry KrystkowiakSeason Record: 56.26 (.683)
Playoff Record: 4-5
The season MVP Karl Malone and his teammate John Stockton were on their way to their 1st NBA Finals and proved too much for Shaq and rookie Kobe Bryant.Western Conference Position: 4th Best Streak: won 6 (twice) Worst Streak: lost 2 (6 times) Team Leaders: Team Leaders: Points: 26.2 Shaquille O’Neal Points: 26.9 Shaquille O’Neal Rebounds: 12.5 Shaquille O’Neal Rebounds: 10.6 Shaquille O’Neal Assists: 8.5 Nick Van Exel Assists: 6.4 Nick Van Exel Steals: 2.4 Eddie Jones Steals: 1.1 Horry / Van Exel Blocks: 2.9 Shaquille O’Neal Blocks: 1.9 Shaquille O’Neal 0 - Posted on: Wed, 10/27/2010 - 11:48am #420507

HitsterParticipantKobe wasn’t a top 10 pick when he was drafted so whilst we could say he was a good prospect he wasn’t the hottest prospect in the 1996 draft. He learnt from the bench and grew into his role becoming an All Star around the time of the first Championship under Coach Jackson. They won 3 titles with Shaq and have won two since he left but in 2004-05 the first post Shaq season they struggled but the next year you had Coach Jackson back and Kobe averaging 35.4ppg and the 81 point game, this was when Kobe showed that he could really be the MAN for the Lakers. Since then Gasol has arrived and another two titles have been added, I think that post Coach Jackson will be the Lakers next big test if they could win without him then the Kobe legacy would be absolutely huge to what it already is.

True, but is it OK to say that Kobe helped Shaq’s legacy as well?

Demarcus OnealParticipantKobe still had enormous pressure on him being dubbed as the next player to be compared to Jordan and to be seen a young heir apperent. Kobe made Kobe like in that Utah series where he got stripped by Stockton and then airballed 3 times in overtime to lose the series, to see him making clutch shots the wya he does today really shows how much he has grown as a player

llperezshaq helped kobe’s legacy with the championships. But other then that, i dont see one way shaq helped make kobe. Kobe was always hungry and pushed himself and had a stronger work ethic then shaq the day kobe was drafted.

JoeWolf1@Indianabasketball, of course that’s true as well, Shaq played 8 years before he won a title and Kobe was a crutial part of that. I don’t think I implied he didn’t
