In the last 8 years none of the nba champions have had an undersized PF Smallest Being Haslem at 6’10, Should gms even draft a player who is a undersized powerforward even if he is going to fill a need and is best player available if they can not win a championship with him?

    2010 – Lakers – Gasol

    2009 – Lakers – Gasol

    2008 – Boston – Garnett

    2007 – Spurs – Duncan

    2006 – Heat – Haslem

    2005 – Spurs – Duncan

    2004 – Pistons – Wallace

    2003 – Spurs – Duncan

    Thoughts?

I think he meant Rasheed Wallace. But your right Duncan was pretty much the center for both campionship teams listed.

Also Gasol happened to have one of the best players ever on his team in Kobe and K.G had 2 other Hall of  Famers plus One of the best point guards in the NBA. Those same PF struggled to get to the playoffs on there old teams

Didn’t that Heat team have Shaq and Zo on it?

When’s the last time a team with a undersized big starting as thier main guy won a title?

Ben Wallace was just 6-9 on the 2004 Pistons. Kendrick Perkins is big in terms of build but he’s actually a bit short by NBA center standards at 6-10. So maybe 2008.

    6-10 isn’t small.

Also, Ben Wallace wasn’t the better big on that team I feel over Sheed.

I know none of them have won a championship yet, but this year Kevin Love, Paul Millsap, and DeJaun Blair have made a solid impact with their team.

Put them in a starting spot on a freak team like the Heat and I could still see them winning a championship despite being undersized at their position.

6"10 is pretty small for a center. And Idk if he was better, but he sure made more of an impact on the game with his defence and rebounding. Ben Wallace was a straight up beast the year they won it.

I see the point here though, I too question the effectiveness of undersized PFs, unless they are proven to be exceptional defenders. Especially given the trend for 6’11-7′ PFs at the moment. 6’9" probably won’t cut it for a championship team these days unless you have excellent length or a great weak-side shot-blocker at C like D-Howard. I’d be very carefully looking at an undersized PFs D before his offensive skills.

Look at DaJuan Blair, at only 6’7, Duncan round 6’10, and there top atm, and IMO going to win the ring this year.

Duncan is also a great defender though, so he is skilled enough to overcome any deficiencies in size.

Any lack of height in Blair is covered by Duncan and Kendrick Perkins had KG who was DPOY at his side on the Celtics’s 2008 Championship Team.

I don’t think you can call 6′ 9" (in shoes) undersized for a power forward even today, but it is definitely no more than average. Also you need to consider leaping ability, bulk and arm length (really the max height you can reach without jumping is much more important than how high the top of your head is). But I agree it is interesting to look at how much height there has been in the champions in the last ten years.

I’m sure the Mavericks would much rather have selected Glen Davis over the 6’11" Nick Fazekas back in ’07, and I’m sure many teams regret letting DeJuan Blair slip past them all the way to the early second.

Basically, what I’m trying to say is-with the amount of post-lotto/second rounders that don’t pan out and never amount to be anything more than a 4th or 5th guy off the bench, if not worse, I think teams should concern themselves less with filling certain height/weight/athleticism criteria and just pick the best ball-player, especially if they’re a championship caliber team that is close to winning a title and could use maybe a little more beef under the boards.
