I’m not sure if this was posted yet but I do remember Derrick Williams on the night of the NBA draft lottery somewhat comparing himself to Lebron James… and couldn’t believe it.. and because I could’nt believe it I thought I was just hearing things.. but no…

"I think I’m the No. 1 pick because I have more star quality I would think," the small forward said. "I’m just a bigger person. Just trying to fill in for a big star like LeBron like they’re missing. That missing piece. I think that’s me."

He said he has more “star quality” than Irving, yet he was barely in the radar amongst mainstream college fans. I like that he is trying to sell himself to be the #1 pick, but Irving has more star quality than he does.

The only reason he’s not on the radar amongst mainstream is because he’s from Arizona.  Arizona is more known as a football state.  Kyrie Irving is from Duke.  And I agree with his statement.  Derrick Williams is a guy that I want on my team.  I’m hoping he goes #1.  I just didn’t see enough of Kyrie Irving in the season for me to say he’s the best player in college ball.

Not only that, Kyrie Irving had a one of the greatest coaches in college history, along with 2 veteran seniors and a great bunch of role players.

I watched the video of the interview he was not comparing himself to lebron. You have watch the video, I think it’s on youtube, but it taking it way out of context to say he thinks he’s like lebron. In fact in the interview he compares himself to Beasley.

I think he’s just desperately trying to avoid ending up in Minnesota with that logjam situation over there. I hope Cleveland take him first overall and snag Brandon Knight with the 4th. Nothing wrong with Williams selling himself a bit.

I think his being for Arizona has nothing to do with why he is considered by many to be the second pick in the draft. He is actually originally from California, and while Duke may be known as a much more prestigious basketball institution than most, Arizona is not exactly chopped liver. Not to mention, Williams killed Duke in the tourney, I think he got his props man. He WAS under the radar, maybe at the start of the season, but he is very well known now.

You may want him on your team more than Irving, but you are not at all alone. Still, I would not play the Duke over Arizona card in this case. I for one hate Duke, but I just thought Kyrie Irving was the goods. Derrick Williams had an incredible college season, but I do not know if he is a superstar at the next level, or if he can defend SF’s. But, I think the school Kyrie went to has little to do with where he is ranked, it could, but I doubt it. The last time a Duke player went #1 was 1999, and the year before an Arizona PG almost went first (Mike Bibby was considered a lock before "the Kandi man" took over the top spot). So, I would say that has very little to do with it.

Also, Sean Miller, while not exactly Mike Krzyzewski, has been a great coach in his own right. He was the one that built the team around Derrick Williams, and I think he did a fantastic job of that. Derrick may have been great whereever he went, but he played at Zona and while he was off the radar two years ago, he is now in my mind, and in the minds of most reporting on the draft, a lock to go in the top 3. So, I think his going to Zona if anything has made him atleast a possibility for being first pick in the draft, and I for one do not think playing that card is really viable in this situation. Irving was considered awesome for many other reasons than the school he went to, as is Derrick Williams. Arizona being considered a "football state" is pretty irrelevant.

Williams may not have been comparing himself to Lebron James directly… but he sure does think he can replace Lebron in Cleveland.. that statement is clear as day.. what other reason would he have included Lebrons name? Also.. I dont know exactly who said it but someone said Irving had a good coach, teammates, etc.. are you kidding me? Are you really using that as valid reason why Williams should go ahead of Irving? Thats just pushing it… okay so he didnt play a full season but come on now dont come up with some bs reasons like that.. and that Williams wasnt noticed by mainstream college fans??? Playing at Arizona.. in the Pac 10… a power conferece.. on a team lurking around the top 30 all season… a school with a number of alumni who have played in the Nba or are playing in it now… another invalid reason .. those two reasons are irrelevant.. if you want to endorse Williams as the top pick it should be because he’s the better player not because what school he plays for or the coach he plays for and who his teammates are.

and Mess.eee: I get your point.. but you’re only covering the first half of his interview. He’s saying he can he feels he can fill the void by Lebron James. To think you can impact a team as a rookie is one thing.. but to say he thinks he can do for Cleveland what Lebron did for Cleveland is a bit far fetched in my eyes at least. That is a BOLD statement and to try and market yourself like that.. its just like come guy who do you think you are? Willaims did say he has more star power than Irving you’re right.. but would you care explaining the 2nd half of his statement because apparently I am having a tough time understanding
