valentineCouple years ago, Lance was considered a poor man’s tyreke.
do you think he has surpassed him now as the better player?

Tongue-Out-Like-23ParticipantYes, Stephenson is the better player. Hell, just last season I thought Tyreke was better than Lance but Lance really worked hard this off-season. Not only can Stephenson do everything ‘Reke can do, but he has improved his outside jumper and is definitely a defensive stopper.

azphxsuns10ParticipantI would definitely say Lance. It seems as though ‘reke has steadily declined after winning rookie of the year. On the other hand Lance has done nothing but improve. I didn’t think Lance would ever amount to much but he has worked very hard on his game and most importantly his attitude. He deserves all the recognition he’s getting up to this point.

B-ball fanParticipantTyreke Evans just has struggled a lot with injuries and not quite finding a role. Tyreke is probably the more talented overall player, but his lack of shooting consistency and struggles finishing at the rim have limited his effectiveness. Still, both Evans and Stephenson are good hardworking players who bring similar skillsets, just with Evans having spent the early part of his career as the go-to guy on a bad team, while Stephenson has slowly been brought along and seen his role increase.
The Pacers have been fantastic at developing their own young players. Granger (before the injuries), Hibbert, George and Stephenson have all shown consistent improvement throughout their careers and show no signs of stagnation.

Memphis MadnessParticipant3 triple doubles already for Lance. I don’t know what his overall stats are but he is doing very well this year. And, the Pacers are kicking butt. I would probably name THREE Pacers as starters to the All Star Game — Paul George, Roy Hibbert, and Lance Stephenson.

He’s better than Tyreke Evans, yes. But he’s not better than Dwyane Wade.

jwall1ParticipantWell right now, Lance… But as far as who has a higher ceiling overall, that would be Tyreke. I think Reke’s decline has been due in part to nagging injuries, which is unfortunate because he really has star potential.. Lance is a good 3rd/4th option on a team and IMO he has definitely reached his ceiling.

IndianaBasketballParticipantThere’s no way Lance Stephenson has already reached his ceiling. He has way too much growing and maturing to do as a player still. There’s still so much he can add to his game and get better at. And based on the improvement he’s shown since his rookie season, I have no doubts he’ll keep working. His goal isn’t just to be a good player… It’s to be a great player.

jwall1ParticipantI shouldn’t have said he has reached his ceiling, but instead that he is close to reaching his ceiling. He is below average athletically and physically and is an ok (but at many times inconsistent) defender. He clearly puts in alot of effort and plays with alot of heart, but his lack of athleticism/natural ability does limit his ceiling. He is also in a great situation in Indiana where he gets alot of open looks due to how much attention George and Hibbert draw. I would say with confidence he is the fourth (and if Granger was healthy fifth) best player on his team.

IndianaBasketballParticipantStephenson is damn near 6′ 6", weighs 230 lbs and has a 6′ 11" wingspan. IF that’s "below average" physically for a shooting guard, what’s average lol?
Athletically, he’s at least average. He’s definitely not an explosive leaper or athlete, but he’s improved athletically since being in the NBA. He’s got very good staight line speed and good lateral quickness, body control and change of direction.
I think you’re sleeping on Stephenson.

jwall1ParticipantI could be, but I am just evaluating him based on what I have seen from watching Indiana’s games. I have alot of respect for Stephenson because he is a great team player, which is not something I can say about Tyreke. I clearly did not do my research on his height/wingspan (from watching him he looks 6’4 with an average wingspan). If I were to pick a player based on potential, I’d still go with Reke. After his awful start (due probably to his ankle sprain), he was putting up nice numbers in limited minutes (look up his per 36 minute stats).

DolanCareParticipantI’ve recently moved to New Orleans and have seen plenty of Pelican games. Tyreke Evans once showed promise, but all he is capable of doing at this point is driving to the rim. He’s a big fast body who can finish after contact. That’s it. No shot, playmaking is suspect, defense is poor.
Lance Stephenson is still improving and he’s already a superior playmaker, defender and shooter.
0- Posted on: Tue, 12/24/2013 - 5:42am #858677
jwall1ParticipantWhat are you talking about? Reke is an above average playmaker for a 2 guard(probably at the same level as Lance) and is just as good of a defender as Lance. Sure he lacks the ability to shoot, but his ability to attack the rim and get to the FT line (and make his FT’s at a respectable percentage unlike Lance) makes up for it. Clearly you have not watched Tyreke Evans enough…..

For_Never_EverParticipantThis shouldnt even be questioned anymore. Tyreke hasn’t improved on anything since college. Lance has stopped his old knockle headed ways, and when his offense isnt going the team can still depend on his defense. He has changed his mindset and taken up the challenge on be a very good defender. I have always thought being a good defender is more upstairs then athletic tools.

He leads the nba in tripple doubles this year and honestly who thought he could do this today after he was suspended his rookie season by the pacers after he was hitting his girlfriend.
I can’t help but think about Isiah "J.R." Rider when I see Lance go to work. Rider was very similar build and The better leaper but both are / were strong as hell, very good ball handlers and shooters. Lance might be a better rebounder and passer but you always have a little drama surrounding them and the swagger is always in competition mode.
I totally agree here that a first class Pacers organisation didn’t hurt his development and he has a big payday down the road. Will be interesting to to see how the Pacers are trying to pay Hill, George, Lance, Hibbert and West down the road even if they don’t resign Granger. This will be an expensive roster in 2 years and maybe the Pacers have to make some moves a la OKC with Harden as a small market franchise with ambitions.

Robb_CParticipantTyreke in that Pacer culture and you would have a much better Tyreke Evans.. you take Lance Stephenson out of that Strong Culture of a Pacers Team.. and you have a guy that gets fined by David Stern regularly, as a coach and an organization its just as important to coach a guy on the x’s and o’s as well as life.. some of these guys dont even know how to use a bank account
