No-one watches Cavs games…and their season has been disappointing. But I have noticed Matthew Dellavedova is quite a good rookie and has shown he belongs in the NBA as a back-up guard. This shows that all hope is not lost for undrafted players.

In the last 7 matches, he has averaged 11 points and 6 assists per game on 53% fg and the Cavs are winning games without Kyrie Irving. In his absence he has been getting about 30 minutes a game.

I would describe him as a Kirk Hinrich type. Tough defense, pass-first type who can hit the 3 but won’t wow with athleticism.

He doesn’t need the ball to contribute. Kyrie does. Thus, Kyrie takes away a lot of opportunities from other players on his team. This dude doesn’t. Kyrie hurts his team by being a terrible defender. Apparently this kid is solid.

I know that Kyrie is a much better 1v1 player, but is it really that much of a stretch to say Dellavedova>Kyrie?

I got out of the negs so I could make posts like this.

I think Kyrie is obviously the better player and he’s going to be the guy you want taking the last shot in a game, BUT Dellavedova is the better team player. Sometimes fit is more important than talent. The Cavs look solid without Kyrie. Sometimes guys step up and it has only been a few games, but if you watch them play you notice a difference. I had talked with a friend and he was talking about what happened to Deng when he got traded and the only thing I thought of was Kyrie. He doesn’t do enough to get other guys involved and isn’t very effective without the ball. By the same token when Lebron was there he dominated the ball, but he also created a lot of clean and easy looks for other guys. Jack and Waiters also look better with Kyrie out.  Hopefully he learns something from watching while he is out and does what it takes to become better in the team guy.

He does have a lot of value and even though we drafted 3 rookies, our undrafted player has made by far the biggest impact. His defense is VERY good, he’s just so persistent and drives other guards crazy. His shot isn’t bad, he just becomes passive at times (although has been much more aggressive since Kyrie’s injury.)

Land of Grant, it’s not totally ridiculous to say that in the sense that you said it. Dellavadova is Varejao like in what he brings to the team, just as a guard. Kyrie is still the best player on the team and you can tell by everyone’s demeanor that the young guys are starting to click / believe in each other. Kyrie needs someone like Dellavadova around to show him how valuable defense is and push him to become better on that end.

I do think Dellavadova will be around for a few years, the Cavs really value him. A lot of Cavs fans drastically prefer him over Jarrett Jack (who minus a few games, has been a shell of his former self and by no means a veteran leader).

He was in my top 60 last year. I liked his skillset, and viewed his Olympic production as a sign he could hang at a higher level than his primarily mid major NCAA schedule. Definitely a good pickup for Cleveland.

Philly got an undrafted guy from the Cavs – Henry Sims – and he’s probably the best center they’ve had in years LOL !!!  Hope they bring him back
