If the Wolves opt to keep Rubio and develop him, as Kahn continues to publicly commit the franchise to doing, they will be passing on Irving who is easily the best talent in this draft. Derrick Williams is only a defensive upgrade over Beasley and plays the exact same game on offense so they might not be interested in him. With no other worthy top talent this year the Wolves would be smart to try and reaquire a pick (preferably their own) in the 2012 draft if they get 1st overall.

I propose the Raps move up to #1 to draft Irving by either swapping their 1st this year or trading a 1st next year to the Wolves, who also reaquire their 2012 1st from the Clippers in return for Bargnani and Webster. http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=5umwzw7

    Minnesota:

Add 1 year to rebuilding plan and commit to developing Rubio to his best potential by adding Calderon to mentor. With their reacquired 2012 first and either Raps 2011/2012, they should have two really nice young players to add to Rubio/Calderon, Love and Johnson. Lets face it the Wolves are not close they might as well get a top pick next year for how awful they’ll be.

    Clippers:

Have shown a willingness to trade 1st picks to shed bad contracts. Trade a high 1st in 2012 for a young dynamic, scoring/shooting centre who is a perfect addition to core of Griffin, Gordon and Jordan. Address their biggest weakness this year (3 point shooting) with Bargnani and Webster who will both benefit from Blake Griffin double teams.

    Raptors:

Completely blow it up to rebuild with Irving, Derozen and Davis. If Minny wants another 2012 pick instead of Raps 2011 then Toronto will get Kanter to make a SICK young starting 5 of Irving, Derozon, Johnson, Davis, Kanter.

Personally if I was Kahn and I get #1 I would take Irving and give up on Rubio, but this proposal is predicated on the notion that he is in fact a crazy man and thinks Rubio can be as good as Irving.

To simplify each team’s net trade would be:

    Clips:

    Acquire: Bargnani, Webster

Lose: Kaman, Aminu, Minnesota 2012 1st

    Raps:

    Acquire: Irving, Kaman, Ridnour

    Lose: 3rd overall / 2012 1st, Calderon, Bargnani

    Wolves:

    Acquire: Own 2012 1st, 3rd overall / Raps 2012 1st, Calderon, Aminu

    Lose: 1st overall, Webster, Ridnour

To be honest, I’d love this trade, but I honestly think the Wolves end up getting too much in this trade for what they give up. In this scenario they would likely give up:

1st Overall–Kyrie Irving, Luke Ridnour and Martell Webster

and in return they get the 3rd overall (2011), Own pick in 2012 (probable top 5), Raptors pick (probable top 5), Al-Farouq Aminu (promising Rookie) and Jose Calderon (solid back-up)

After the 2011 and  2012 drafts that could mean the Wolves would could have collected something like this with that trade (looking at guys availabe on NBAdraft.net Mock Draft)

Enes Kanter, Anthony Davis and Austin Rivers, Al Farouq Aminu and Calderon

leaving us with a lineup of

Ricky Rubio, Jose Calderon, Jonny Flynn

Austin Rivers, Wes Johnson, Wayne Ellington

    Michael Beasley, Aminu, Anthony Tolliver

Kevin Love, Anthony Davis, Anthony Randolph

    Enes Kanter, Darko, Nicola Peckovic

Obviously a super young, but super talented line-up…but also unrealistic. If a trade like this were going to happen the Wolves would almost surely have to ship out one of Beasley, Wes Johnson or maybe both.

You think the wolves are getting too much because you misinterpreted what I proposed. The Wolves get their preference of Toronto’s 2011 top 5 and their 2012 lottery, not both. Still like it for your team?

I LOVE the idea of stockpiling 2012 draft picks for the Wolves…but I highly doubt that deal would ever go down. It’s too unrealistic to imagine Toronto giving up Bargnani, and the Clips giving up the pick they own of the Wolves for anything less than Rubio.

trade Rubio to the highest bidder.  I think Irving is more of a sure thing than Rubio.  Maybe we can get a package where we can get Alec Burks plus extra.  That way we upgraded both backcourt positions tremendously in one offseason.

I think it all depends on draft order. No picks are set in stone yet. Its not like the Wolves have a top 3 pick already. It might drop to 4th or 5th after the order has been set. And around 4th or 5th, the Wolves could take Vesely or Kanter. Either one I think would fit into Minny well as still allow them to develop Rubio. I agree that Kahn should trade Rubio’s right, but let’s face it he aint going to. Guy lives in his own world, in his own fantasy and thinks Rubio will come to Minny soon and he will change the franchise forever. We will soon see what this kid can really do and who was right in the end. In the end Kahn makes the choice and the fans of Minny as well as the rest of the league has to sit back and watch/laugh/cry which ever you choose.

This trad eis bad for so many reasons. Trading up is not wise in this draft, especially 3 to 1. All that value to move up 3 to 1? Minnesota will not select 1st in this draft, they never do, worst team never selects 1st anyways. After the lottery Toronto very well could have the 1st. A Griffin, Bargnani frontcourt would be the worst defensive frontcourt in the league.Taking on Kaman is not rebuilding, that is exactly what Toronto should not do especially with such talent in next years draft. That Minnesota draft pick is extremely valueable.

OhCanada this is meant to be a draft day trade if Minnesota gets 1st overall and Toronto’s 3-5. I also hope you realize that taking on Kaman for his 1 year 12mil expiring deal saves the Raptors ~40mil in long term salary. After it expires in 2012 their highest paid player would be either Amir at 5.5mil or Kyrie in his 2nd year at #1 money, not sure what’s higher lol. That leaves plenty of room to rebuild.

As far as the Clippers are concerned, Bargnani’s bad defence is offset by having DeAndre Jordan. They are already a very good rebounding team and would benefit from the outside shooting Bargnani and Webster would add to their currently 25th ranked 3fg %. Bargnani would also be able to spread the floor with his shooting and ability to drive from the outside, clearing up room for Blake to operate down low. If the coach wants to play a defensive style then they can bring him off the bench at either PF/C and it would give them the most complimentary C pairing in the league. The Clippers just traded their 1st this year to drop a bad contract, I don’t see why they wouldn’t trade an extra 1st rounder for 2 potential starters that upgrade their dire need for shooting.

I’d honestly trade Rubio the Clippers for next years draft to try and get Austin Rivers next year and get Kanter in this draft. We need a center and a point guard. There are some good point guards in this draft.. But I would much rather get Kanter than Kemba or Knight in this draft. Next year if they can get Rivers.. Then they might FINALLY be something to watch. The Wolves should definitely try to get a new coach (defensive minded much like Thibs) and a new system. That way Kahn loses his man crush of Rubio but gets an actual future star in Rivers and a real center in Kanter. That is what we need. That is what we should do.

The details of trading Rubio to the Clippers I’m not too certain about but I know the Clippers would LOVE Rubio and his passing ability. Him paired with Griffin would be a great combo and would for sure add some highlights each game.

Anyone think that trade idea would be good?

for Rubio, that wouldn’t be half bad.  That’s assuming we get Irving, of course.  Of course, the T-Wolves never get lucky in the lottery so this most likely will be a moot discussion.  In the most likely scenario, we will draft 3rd or 4th and have to take Kanter or Alec Burks or Moniejutas.  Then, we will have to try and get Rubio to play for us.  That may or may not be difficult depending on the impending lockout and Rubio’s current preferences.
