FastAndFuriousParticipantLol this dudes gonna make alot of money as long as he keeps improving!
This may be a highlight video but I dont get that Perry Jones feel with him, where Jones looked beastly in highlights but looked like a mouse in games.
I feel this kid will be a Anthony Davis/KG type player. Just my opinion!

redone1ParticipantHe’s starting to put on a little bit of muscle which is a great sign for his development. I didn’t think it would ever be possible but if he keeps improving his outside shot and handle he could become a taller version of Durant. Or he could continue to improve his defense, shotblocking and strength and become a more athletic KG. Sky seems to be the limit for him. I’ve also heard he has a great work ethic and wants to be the best. Seems like he’s definately been working on his body and game. Can’t wait to see what he looks like in 2 years as a senior in highschool.

Ghost01ParticipantIt’s easy for people to watch these videos and say: "These are highlights" and "Who knows what will happen to him"
And that stuff is all true, but at the same time, this is as close to downright scary as any prospect I have seen. He’s easily over 7 feet and hes draining 3s and pushing the ball in transition. I agree that there are some aspects of KG in there, but KG wasn’t draining 3s in high school and taking guys off dribble, as well as hitting step backs from 20 feet.
Unbelievable potential there.

VintageKobeParticipantDudes stroke his pure. That euro he put on was absolutely incredible. For someone that size to be that quick is unreal. He needs to gain about 70 pounds before he gets in the league. That’s like 3 years away so that’s possible. I hope he develops a back to the basket post game but if he works he could be a legit game changer. A taller durant??? Good lord

mplsrawkusParticipantcrazy shit for a sophmore. if he hits the weights hard he will be stronger and jump higher. i would also like to se him develope a post game, get the left and and right hand jump hook down and the turn around jumper over both shoulders. in 4 years he should be the 1st pk in the draft fallowed by seventh woods.

flopdownDI have actually seen him play full games when he was in 8th grade if I’m not mistaken. First 8th grader game I watch, he IS ridiculous. I don’t really know what he should do from here on out, he had such a good feel in the post, I think he can be an amazing power forward, I don’t know about his success at the three, a lot people get caught up dominating the perimeter in HS with their absurd length and athleticism but I don’t know if he can have success at 7’1 (sophomore in HS) as a SF, just way too lanky. Giannis Adetokunbo was 6’9 heading to draft. I might be wrong on this one because I haven’t seen full games of this new thon maker but he has almost a guaranteed shot in he NBA as a PF if he keeps his head straight, as a NBA sf the road will be much tougher.
none the less crazy coordination for such a long kid, if there can be a Sf over 7′ ft tall, is this African soccer player. Crazyyyy

HitsterParticipantFor someone who we would assume might get a lot of baskets via dunks or tap ins, he looks as if he has a very nice developing outside game with a legit 3 point range. I don’t usually comment on prospects 3 years off their draft year but this guy looks very interesting.
If he does become a lockdown defender then I can imagine lots of "Meet your Maker" type banners and t-shirts when he blocks shots.

bimirudParticipant… I can’t wait to see how he develops. But I’m a little wary about projecting a H.S. big’s perimeter skills to the next level. Look at mixtapes of Andre Drummond and Kwame Brown. They handled the ball a lot against little kids, but once they played against college or pros, those handles disappeared real quick. Even Tyson Chandler was crossing guys over in H.S. … he’s sure not doing that now.
But Maker really looks promising …

TONYDABOSS77ParticipantWhat’s really special is that he has a 2guard’s game while MOVING like a 2guard.
Dirk & KG had guard like skills, but neither moved as swift as a guard. Only one big guy has combined the two in recent memory & that’s Durant.
Maker has potential through the roof.

4ngetnmoreDUKEParticipantI see a more athletic verson of dirk nowitski. This kid has way more of a perimeter game when it comes to ball handling and creating his shot against defense then garnett did at this age. I know its almost a slap in the face because of hiw his career was derailed by injuries but talent and potential wise i see a taller version of jonathan bender. If he stays healthy works on his skill and jumper, something todays version of kids dont do, he is the next HUGE thing in the NBA. Id like to see him stop growing so smaller defenders can dig at him as much on the perimeter.

HitsterParticipantWhen you see Dirk and KG comparisions I always take them with a pinch of salt but any combination of those two would be scary. Maker looks as if he can play both inside and outside plus think of his speed against half court orientated C’s. They might be able to outmuscle him around the basket but if he draws them out and then uses his speed to get inside or fade away and hit a mid range jumper he’ll be virtually taking a free shot with his height.

HaleParticipantI think some of us need to calm down a little. Obviously the potential is through the roof here, there is no denying that. But he still has things he definitely needs to work on and we are watching a highlight tape. Those 3’s he’s hitting in that video aren’t nearly as impressive when you realize he shot 28% from deep this year. He’s the age of a junior so next season will likely be his last in high school. He doesn’t have nearly as much time to develop his body as many think and he has a very long way to go there, plus he plays out of the paint too much. I understand he has an awesome foundation of skills to build upon but he’s got a long way to go before he becomes the best prospect I’ve ever seen. There is a reason he isn’t the unanimous top player in his class.
0- Posted on: Tue, 02/11/2014 - 1:10pm #870937
Ghost01ParticipantI see what you are saying, but I think most people are blown away by the skills he has for being that tall at that age.
Keep in mind, Joel Embiid is probably going to go No.1 this year. He is around the same height as this kid, is a bit bulkier but not by that much, and isn’t even close to as skilled. He has ZERO guard skills and couldn’t shoot a 3 to save his life. And again, that’s a potential No.1 pick.
I’m not saying what you are saying is wrong, because it’s not. But I think you have to take into consideration that we are talking about a guy who could top out around 7’2 and is an athlete. He is going to impact the game greatly defensively, and on top of that has some offensive skills. For all the talk about how Embiid can develop a great post game, imagine if this kid who already can make moves on guys on the perimeter develops one.
Hyperbole sucks, but if you are basing it off pure potential, there is no reason to not be excited.

HaleParticipantI totally understand. His potential is unheard of and he has an awesome foundation of skills. Guys his size don’t move like that and do the things he does. However, his ability to do those things is pretty overstated right now. He looks good taking 3’s in a highlight reel and crossing guys up but he hasn’t actually proven to be effective at either (coming back to the 28% from deep and Andre Drummond also crossing guys in high school). We agree, I just have my doubts at this point.

Ghost01ParticipantFor sure, I will say that there have been plenty of guys who have developed into decent 3 point shooters in the NBA who didn’t even take 3s in high school. I’m not claiming he is a good shooter now, but at least he can hit them occasionally, which is more than most his age and size can say. The ball handling stuff is hard to judge, but scouts have said he seems like he "could" play perimeter at higher levels, which leads me to believe he has some ballhandling skills.
Overall its just way too hard to tell yet. Its too hard to tell what any of these college players are going to be, let alone this guy.

lalailaParticipantThon Maker looks like a stud..If he will become three-point shooter who also blows by 5inch smaller players it would be something unseen..
but in defense of Joel Embiid, you said ‘a bit bulkier’ ?? do you know Joel is around 250, and Maker was measured 192 or smt last summer.. I mean Maker optimal weight at the time of his draft probably will be around 220, while Embiid next to his 250 has still much room to improve physically..
secondly, I don’t know if it’s that much better that 7footer is a wing player rather than the best low post, back to the basket scorer.. If we are talking about ceilings(Maker’s comparisons of better KG, taller KD looks like ceiling of ceilings since he is HS soph) then we all know Joel shows signs to be somewhat the closest thing to Hakeem..
so would you really take jumpshooting dribbling 7footer over Olajuwon?? If so it’s still only scoring, what about Joel’s ability to pass, and offcourse what about his elite potential as a defender?
Joel Embiid can be a superstar and it’s unfair to call HS sophmore much better prospect even if he looks like a freak of nature.

Anton123ParticipantHe looks like a more agile version of Isiah Austin at the same stage.
People were also drooling over Austin’s ability to cross guys over and shoot off the dribble, but those are probably the most overrated skills a big man can possibly have.
Sure he COULD be a scary player, he also could be a guy that gets drafted off potential and never makes an impact (and that is way more likely too).

For_Never_EverParticipantI have to disgree with you. Austin as long as I known about him has never been feared as shot blocker or any kind of a rim protector. This kid has been a different story from I have kept up with, he has always been feared anywhere close to the rim. Vids from last year was him strctly being near the hoop. It’s crazy he is doing what Austin does now only.
