Can somebody please explain to me what more this guy could possibly do? He played nearly perfect basketball last year, and showed great improvement each year which suggests to me he hasn’t maxed out. He is lethal attacking the rim, and shot nearly 50 percent from 3. He was the most efficient player in college basketball in the past 5 years statistically, according to Kenpom. His assist to Turnover was the highest in the country by a mile. The only real thing is his height, but he is just as tall as Flynn in the measurements and taller than D.J. Augustine was, who went 10 in a loaded draft. I just don’t see the knock on him other than these ridiculous measurables, which I think we all agree are overrated and either way he doesnt score bad. Anybody else think he is going to be at the very least a good starter in the league?

Great post, as I’ve been wondering the same thing…. he just doesn’t seem to be in favor right now, which could be a good thing…. he’s a great example of a player where it’s more important WHERE he goes rather than how HIGH he’s drafted… he’s still hard to find a fit in the draft… I have a strong belief that point guards always go high, so I don’t think he’ll drop too far…

I agree he played great all year but doesnt seem to be getting the attention he should.

The only thing this reminds me of is the way Dee Brown out played Deron Williams during their Junior year at Illinois
(Named Player of the year by Sporting News and came in third place for the Wooden Award)
but Deron got all the hype.

In the end they obviously made the right choice as Williams became an All-Star and Dee Brown is playing over seas so I guess the scouts know what they are doing

because people would feel the same way about johnny flynn their the same height (ty a tad bit taller) but Ty is more effeicent with the basketball in his hands johnny flynn plays very erratic at times and is more suceptable to turnovers. I mean come on Ty averaged 6 ast 1.9 TO a game vs. johnny flynn’s 6 ast. 3.5 TO per game. IMO Ty will be a pass first distributor in the mold of a Rajon Rondo (not saying he plays like him, but how he will impact a game) And Johnny will look for his shot and be a scoring point like the another NYC guy (Starbury) also not saying he plays like him but that’s how he will impact a game

Lawson is going to be a GREAT NBA pg in the next 5 years…
He is a very strong built point guard, who I feel will take on a similar game to that of Jason Kidd. Both can shoot, both have strong bodies, and they LOVE to drive and dish… I too don’t understand why everybody is not giving him much respect or chance… He lead UNC to a national championship, and is one of the fastest point guards in the draft, what more can he do to prove himself???

I don’t need anymore proof that he will be a solid player in the league!

One thing I can think of is very injury prone! that DUI last year didn’t help his character issue either

It’s a pg deep draft this year which hurts Lawson. He’s got a nice ceiling, but I think Gms are higher on Flynn, Rubio and Jennings because of the lack of stars coming out of UNC over the last few years. look at the list of 1st rounders since 2004; Felton, Williams, May, McCants, and Wright. None of these players have/may never reach super stardom, but they are great NBA role players. I think thats why people are shying away from Lawson and the other UNC products this year (Ellington, and Hansbrough.) I like Lawson though and don’t see him dropping out of the Lottery at 14 to Phoenix or having Indiana giving him a look at 13.

The toe injury? OMG everybody is so sick of that. He could have played, but they didn’t need him to play for a while, gave him rest and he was at 150 percent in the final four so i guess the move made sense. That was more a sign of Carolina’s talent and depth than an Injury prone thing. The only injuries he had in three years there were a pretty severe ankle sprain, which happens in basketball ankles turn, and turf toe. Niether have any long term effects and to have only those 2 injuries is a pretty clear injury history if you ask me.

Hey j1232e it wasn’t even a DUI it was a citation for underage drinking. He blew a 0.03. I bet you never drank in college did you?

Lawson is going to have teams kicking themselves if he falls out of the lottery. He is a fringe all-star PG IMHO. For some reason Raymond Felton was a top 5 pick in a deep PG draft that had Deron Williams and Chris Paul in it. Lawson has the same skills Felton does except IMHO Lawson does just about everything better.

1. He has great vertical quickness, but not great lateral quickness, which limits his ability to guard one-on-one. His hands will get him his share of steals, but good hesitation moves will keep him off-balance, and allow the opponent to get by him, or easily get shots over him.

2. He’s not a great passer. He IS a very safe passer, but many of his passes don’t lead guys to easy shots. If you notice when he got his assists at UNC, it was either a spot up jumper for Ellington or Green, or he gave the ball to Hansbrough while he was in the post. I think scouts wanna see more “leading” passes, if that makes sense.

However, he’d be perfect to run the offense in Indiana. Imagine Lawson kicking out to Dunleavy and Murphy, while Granger was slashing, cutting, and scoring his way to another all-star team. Which brings us to another question, what kinda player is T.J. Ford?
