providencefriars1ParticipantThere was a previously posted topic on underrated college pg’s so I thought I would continue the discussion with wing players. By wing players I mean strictly SG’s and SF’s no perimeter 4’s. Also I am not saying these guys will be good NBA guys, I just think they are underrated college guys with a shot at the NBA.
Here’s 5 to start the discussion:
Tony Mitchell(Bama)- He is the lesser known of the Tony Mitchell’s, but I believe that he is better. He is super athletic and improved his almost all of his stats significantly from his freshman year (ppg, rpg, apg, spg, bpg, ft%, fg%, 3ptfg%).
Darius Johnson-Odom– Johnson will be the main scoring threat for the second straight year on a very good Marquette team this year and he can absolutely stroke it. He connected on 37% of threes and two threes a game last year despite being focused on heavily by opposing defences.
Jason Clark– Clark was the second scoring option on an experienced Georgetown team which was led by Austin Freeman and Chris Wright. With both of them gone Clark will have to score a lot more from the perimeter. He improved his scoring and rebounding numbers his first three years and shot in the high forties from the field every year.
Orlando Johnson– Johnson is another guy who improved all his numbers every year and also scored over 20 a game for Santa Barbara. He showed his great range from 3 with 40% and over 2 a game and an ability to get to the line and hit foul shots since he made 5.1 ft’s per game. Not to mention Johnson snagged 6 boards a game. No doubt he is one of the best mid major players in the country.
And a deep sleeper…
Jawanza Poland– This a name to file away for 2013 draft but he still could breakout this year. He only averaged 9ppg last year but he is a terrific slasher who can knock down free throws. Dont let the numbers fool you, he has scoring ability and is a better shooter than his poor percentages show. I’ll predict over 15ppg this year for a USF team that really lacked someone who could consistently score from the perimeter last year. I think he could be that guy.

Scottoant93ParticipantI gonna be biased but Rutger’s Dane Miller, I feel Mike rice will continue to develop him and he’s going to be one of the key players if rutgers going to make a run

Chilbert arenasParticipantOrlando Johnson (UCSB)I knew this kid when he was at LMU and wish he spent his whole career there. 6’5 with huge wingspan and a strong body with a high motor. He was our best player as a freshman and is killing it at Santa Barbra leading them to the tourney for the first time in a long time.
Soloman Hill (Arizona) I watched him play in high school on same team as Renardo Sidney. He rebounds at a good rate for a wing and is an exceptional passer. He’s one of those guys that always seems to make the right play and rarely makes a mistake. He’s a sneaky athlete, but needs to work on his jumper.

providencefriars1ParticipantDane Miller must be really good if Rutgers is going to compete since they lost their three best players… Mitchell, Coburn, and Beatty. He will defintely have an opportunity to break out.

JNixonParticipantDane Miller is an intriguing prospect who’s under the radar. He’s got raw point forward skills at 6’7 205.
Rodney McGruder for KState is underrated. He willingly defends, rebounds extremely well on the wing for a SG/off-guard (led the team in boards, with Curtis Kelly and Jamar Samuels among others being in the frontcourt) and has a strong spot ujp 3-point shot. He does need to improve his ball-handling though, especially since Pullen and Kelly won’t be there to bail him out or for him to fade throughout games.
6’7 210 combo forward JP Olukemi for OK State is also underrated. He was very productive last year, but he’s getting overlooked due to incoming Fr. LeBryan Nash. Nash will be very good, probably will lead OK State in scoring, but Olukemi is a big matchup problem at this level. He has a strong mid-range game, and he can drive the lane against PF’s. He’s often too strong for SF’s and off-guards too. And he chips in on the glass. He’s a slept on player.
Glen Rice Jr is going to have to step up, but he’s also underrated. He’s a rangy 6’4 SG/SF who also has athleticism. He can hit spot-up shots and he is a promising defender who has had moments. He needs to improve his handle and continue to fill out his frame though

JNixonParticipantAlso, my school (GA Southern) played USF. Polland likes to attack off the dribble, but he’s a bit of a ballhog and he doesn’t take great shots. He’s a mediocre shooter at best. He has a little bit of shot-making ability, but nothing all that special. He probably will continue to be inefficient next year, although he might be asked to score more.

SubZeroParticipantMy school was at a tourney and saw other teams play against Tony Mitchell’s team at a Grand Slam a few years ago in Alabama, and his team beat every team they played by like 70 lol he’s seriously underrated

JNixonParticipantHe should. Has to work on polishing his perimeter game and getting stronger. Has all-conference potential easy.

McDunkinKazemi plays the 4 in college but played sf/pf for the Iranian team. He is just as capable on perimeter as he is in the low post (maybe even more so) and also has the skills and athleticism to guard the 3. I see him getting most of his minutes at the 3 when(if) he gets to the NBA while also getting minutes at the 4 especially if he goes to a team that uses a small ball lineup
