Lotto StudParticipantThere are quite a few players that are undersized in the NBA that play the PF position. I would like to know are those who are undersized better suited to play the SF position. When I bring this up 2 players in particular come to mind, and they are Amir Johnson 6’9” 210 & Brandan Wright 6’10” 210. Both players have the height for the PF position, but lack the bulk/size.
What kind of impact do you think those type of players who are undersized playing the PF spot would have if they played SF?

Wavy BagelsParticipantit depends if they’re fast enought to play the 3. also depends if they’re better perimeter or post defenders. these things come to mind.

Stanford hoops1You don’t have to be a certain size. Just got be strong or a good defender(K.G,Dennis Rodman) and in the east you really don’t have to be either since there aren’t alot of dominating PF’s

Brandan Wright is in the West though.

Tha_PrinceParticipantThat’s a good question, I’ve thought this too watching Amir play. He does a good job deflecting passes out on the perimeter, and is a good weak side defender. I would like to see how he handles himself out on the perimeter with a slower SF as he is quick for a PF but below average for a SF.
That said defensively I think he could hold his own. Offensively is a different story he has virtually no handles and his jumpshot (even though it has shown improvements this season) is lacking. His offense on the perimeter would be hardly a threat for the other team as a majority of his points come from putbacks/tip-ins and a limited range of post moves.

Stanford hoops1Wright might have a problem if he isn’t a good defender. Does he even start though?

fastdanParticipantYou to have good handles and have the ability to shoot from the perimeter to be a SF in the league…Amir and Wright can do neither of those things.
Not to sure about Wright, since I barely see him play, but it’s pretty obvious Johnson is not 210. He’s probably at least 240 and seems taller then 6’9. I’m pretty sure those numbers are from his rookie year, when he was 18, so his body has grown a lot since then.

Yea for UNC 06-07, LOL you were better off asking does he get burn LOL. It’s a shame his talent has gone to waste. I wonder how he would’ve panned out if MJ didn’t give up on him in Charlotte.

NO WAY!!!!!!!! Josh Smith/Marvin Williams both are 240 & look it, but I could give him 220-225 at the most, but 240 is pushing it real hard.

Lotto StudParticipantThaddeus Young anyone??????? Come on now he definitely does not need to play the 4, he is athletic enough to play the 3 & defend the 3 spot.

omphalosParticipantYeah I don’t see why Iguodala isn’t playing the 2, and having Young start at the 3. Holiday, Iguodala, Young, Brand, Hawes. Sorted.

esperanzafleet69Participantthaddeus young is a way better example…
do you think that amir or brandon wright can play in any way on the wing? absolutely not…
especially for amir, his size/weight should not matter… as long as he can defend the PF position (which he easily can… )… this has to do a lot with defense and amir johnson is a great defensive PF… not many people realize that unless you watched the stones the last 5 years…
greater example, look at the pistons record vs the magic during this time.. i believe during the regular season, in like 5 years, they may have lost 2 games at most.. theyre interior defense with sheed, maxiell, amir johnson, mcdyess, and ben wallace was amazing… dwight NEVER had a good game against them…

"greater example, look at the pistons record vs the magic during this time…. dwight NEVER had a good game against them…"
So Dwight averaging 18ppg, 12.7rpg and shooting 59% from the field in 24 games vs the Pistons isn’t good?
What about last season when Dwight dropped 33pts, 17rebs, and 7 blks?
Or maybe in ’09 when he dropped 27pts, 14rebs, 4blks
Hell, even in ’05 when he was 19, he had a 21pt, 13reb, 2blk game vs the Pistons.
His worst game vs the Pistons was an 8pt, 8reb, 4blk outting. And even then, he played 30 minutes only and they still won.
" they may have lost 2 games at most"
They actually lost 9 games vs the Magic since Dwight Howard was drafted.

JNixonParticipantThaddeus Young scores and creates offense much better at the rim than he does from the perimeter. That’s why he plays PF. He can use his quickness, length and athleticism to score more easily from 15 feet in than he can from the perimeter, where he has a below average handle and jump shot range. Young is more effective offensively at PF than SF, even though he can be scored on down low. But that’s not a huge problem because he’s also not more than mediocre with his perimeter D as it is. Young should be a 6th man though, to use his skill set as a mismatch.

JoeWolf1Usuaully ball handling, sub par perimeter defense or the lack of a consistant jumper outside of 15 feet is what causes slightly undersized players to play the PF. The two guys you listed have good height, but are just light which is why they’re considered undersized.
Amir Johnson has been doing fine at PF, IMO. He had a doube double with 3 blocks the other day against San Antonio and is putting up like 10 ponts, 7 boards and a block in just over 26 minutes. I think the power forward position is has the most undersized players putting up good numbers of any position in the league.
