The Sam Presti Model build around 2/3 Top 3 overall Picks. Have a few bad seasons, stack up a few tradable pieces & look for that One Star. And Build around him with other high draft picks and quality veterans, don't over-spend in FA.
Build through the Draft. The key to this Model is that One transient Star has to be on board if you are picking in the Top 3 of the Draft. Thunder
Trade-Your-Way to the Finals. Rockets
DMorey said that the Rockets have to get better by trading & they will make a trade for a SStar to lead their team back to Chip contenders. The Rockets had a deal in place for Amare but they were afraid of his injuries & the amount of $$ they would be on the book for. Now one year later they are still looking for a SStar to trade for. However, what SStar can they trade for & do they have the assests that GM's covet. This Model puzzles me because there is one SStar that may be availble via trade & that is DHow. There are Stars that DMor could trade his draft picks & upside guy's for but i do not see a SStar. I think if Rockets try this Model they will be a 6-8th seed in the West for the next few years
The One Man's Trash is Another Man's Treasure Model TWolves
or look for value on someones elses bench. The TWolves have taken 3 guys with upside from 3 different teams hoping one of them can become a Star. Beasly/MWebster/ARandolph, Beasly & ARandolph have proven that this Model can be effective, but neither of them are players that you build around, they are players you build with. So this Model could be great if you already have that Franchise guy there but you are spinning your wheels if you continue to use this Model to build a team.
So the Model i would use is the SPresti one where if you have a Top 5 pick you draft a player that could help out your team, play hard give the Rookie tons of Minutes & Try to get One of the Stars from the 2012 draft & that could be the Start of a Chip team.
Sam Presti way is the best way but you also forgot. Wait patiently for the right deal and then strike and take care of your one weakness in a savy move that no one saw coming.
He also stacked up draft picks while picking up a lot of young players away from other teams looking to save money. Cook , Maynor, etc
was a great Defensive pickup also, & the Current Move to get Perk & the big guy from the BCats.
The T wolves use the draft they just aren't hitting on the right guys. They took Brewer when they should have taken Noah, they took Rubio and Flynn when they should have taken Curry with one of those. Last year they took Wes (jury's still out) its not like the Thunder are the only team trying to build through the draft they just made great choices, When minnesota made all these selection they thought those were the guys they weren't planning on sifting through the bargain bin it just happened.
The Rockets were good for a while before Yao got hurt so they had the abilty to try and build around that star with pieces that fit. Now that he is out they will be building through the draft.
T-wolves haven't had a chance to draft a franchise talent, they need a number 1 pick. They had many 4-10 picks and kind of wasted them, so they had to try something else. Kahn sometimes looks like a guy who is playing NBA 2K and does a lot of pointless trades and somehow gets a team full of stars. The problem is that he didn't get the stars.
His Beasley trade was a steal and his Brewer and Koufos for Randolph and Curry + cash was not bad either, as Curry opened a lot of cap space for them.
He will use different methods to build his team including looking @ other teams to see if their is a Star on that team that he can get. And a few months ago he said that you can't continue to build around Draft Picks it's just like having 10 new cars in your garage. Eventually some one on this Roster has to become a Star.
They are the Current model
Blazers have done it
LA 2nd pick in the draft
Roy 5th or 6th ROY
Oden 1st in the Draft
Batum Mid-Late Pick
The only difference is that TBlazers were hit with 2 major injuries to their Franchise players. But built their team through the Draft.
The Free Agency & Trade team would be the Heat/Knicks/Nets.
have also traded there way to rings aswell as boston. so looks like in recent years this way works best.
Both of those teams a HOFers already, and the Lakers had Bynum 10th pick/Odom 3rd pick
the celtics had a chip-on-his-shoulder Rondo/Perk and drafted Big Baby in that same year. & if i remember correctly the Celtics tried to tank & the only reason they got a ring is because they ended up with the 5th pick instead of the 1st pick, when they would have taken the next BRussel(@least thats what people said about GOden @ the time)
Dont listen to Kahn
Minnesota's plan was to build through the draft they went for other guys after he failed the plan was
Randy Foye, McCants, Corey Brewer, Kevin Love by the time they got Love the other guys had already proved to be busts.
RGay instead of Foye would have been great.
Any Victoria's Secret model. Whoever is in charge of their personel is a genius.
To your question, I like Presti's model. This is based purely on the detrimental impact of overspending in free agency. One bad contract will burden the team harshly and more than one destroys a team for years.
If Minny knew how to draft, they could be looking at being close to the Sam Presti model but they dont have a clue. Imagine if the picked up. Stephen Curry and Derozan in one draft and Evan Turner or Cousins in the next. They would have a line up of
This line up is not that bad and also know that you have Beasley on the bench and possibly Lawson, Randolph and some other vet pieces
Lawson, Webster, Darko are on the bench
Both of these line ups made a lot of sense to most of the people on this draft board.
If any one of us that have some knowledge were general managers of Timberwolves, they would not suck and would have a nice future.
The Blazers could have been special. Stacked from top to bottom. Injuries have really done a number on them. I'm rooting for em against Dallas.
As of now the Thunder are looking pretty good. They seem to be trying to build their team through the draft, small trades and wise spending. Building their team into a Celtics 2.0 has been the smartest thing Presti has ever done.
The thunder are my favorite team now and Sam Presti is an amazing GM, but it's not that easy. Sam Presti has drafted well but he has also gotten VERY lucky in the lottery. They were handed Kevin Durant. This team would be not close to where they are not if it wasnt for Durant. Westbrook was an amazing pick that I didnt expect, but he was also selected at number 4. Harden was the right choice in my opinion and he is finally showing why on a consistent basis. He picked up Thabo and Maynor for next to nothing. He stole Perkins from the Celtics. I am still amazed the Celtics traded away Perkins, but I am still excited about it. Sam Presti is great, but getting lucky in the lottery certainly doesnt hurt. Just look at the Bulls. They #1 pick in the 2008 draft and 3 years later the have the best record in the league. You have to get lucky
