I just love these kind of inside stories that you find out about years later. This is a piece from the new book about the last decade of Kansas Basketball. It's the second good story i've seen after the one about Mario Chalmers jawing at Jay Wright during an NCAA Tournament game.
I remember him committing to Duke, sort of forgot how huge his one year at Minnesota was. The funny thing to me, is I have not heard the best things regarding Dan Monson, lol. Plus, with where the Gophers were at the time, I could see him kowtowing to Kris. I am sure he probably would have played a decent little role at Kansas, but being arrogant enough for a team to not want you, he must have been BAD.
This is also not the first case I have heard of Roy Williams' supposedly turning down a highly regarded player. I remember that JaRon Rush, who was a BIG time recruit in 1998, supposedly went on record as dogging Roy's substitution patterns. I forget exactly what he said, but it was along the lines of Roy not getting his players NBA love. Roy also apparently told JaRon there was no guarantee he would start. I think after he heard what JaRon said, he stopped recruiting him and Rush went to UCLA. Brandon Rush did play for KU, but Bill Self had taken over. This really makes me respect Roy for listening to his team, I think in the end, things probably turned out for the better.
An article on the eligibility concerns of Brandon Rush in 2005, mentioning the JaRon Rush incident:
Thanks for that find MikeyV. Yeah i'm a huge Carolina fan and have always loved Roy Williams. I don't think he's the greatest coach out there necessarily, but he knows how to run a program and help recruits become men. Above all else, I just think he's a good, honest man you'd want looking out for your kids. He targets good kids, and won't go against his values.
Similar to your story and the one about Humphries, Roy amazed me when he didn't actively pursue John Wall in 2009. I'm not sure whether Wall's arrest had any effect, but the main reason I heard was because he told Kendall Marshall when he committed that he wouldn't recruit another point guard before he arrived at UNC. That's serious character to stick to that, because Wall had called Carolina his favorite team. They could have had a serious shot at him.
passed up on Kim and that's what really matters.
No Roy was mad he couldnt get JaRon and Karrem in a package deal he thought was a garuntee because of Myron Piggie was getting money from a KU booster and the KU booster even let Jaron live with them. Brandon never looked at unc because Roy was the coach there. Their family believes Roy Williams is the reason JaRon never made it to the NBA and he was by far the most talented of the 3
I lived in Lawrence Ks, for a number of years and had a bunch of friends who went to KU. One thing I remember was in 2003 Charlie Villenueva had a late visit because he was thinking about going right to the NBA. This was after the season was over and after KU had just lost the National Championship game.
These kind of things weren't announced on campus or anything, but if you were around the feildhouse you could watch these kind of practice if you were in the right place at the right time. Some friends and I were in the right place at that time and I remember Nick Collison taking it to Charlie V like a man possessed. Nick was just coming off an All-American season, but he flat out owned Villenueva. I don't know if he didn't mesh with the team or if Nick was just wanted to teach this young hot shot a lesson in humilty, but needless to say Charlie Villenueva didn't sign with Kansas.
I find this to be interesting to say the least. I had no clue Kris Humphries was arrogant at all. For the team to tell you to not recruit him, as a very highly touted McDonalds All-American, is pretty crazy. He must've really been out of control
I have to watch that Kardashean show with my girlfriend and I agree because atleast I get to see what Lamar Odom and Kris Humphries are like, and he kind of does seem like a pretty big tool. But Lamar seems really chill.
I actually remember his arrogance being mentioned when he got drafted. So you know it must have been bad.
Imagining some 17 year old who should be in awe of a great Kansas team telling them they should be prepared to defer to him is incredible. That level of cockiness is almost funny.
